Why does it have to be about the amount of activity rather than the quality of activity? Besides, the less activity there is in general, the more of a problem it is when someone is acting poorly. Also, who are you to question this? A block feature is not only something that I want, it's something that was already implemented on the previous iteration of the site and was used by multiple people. You are not an administrator or moderator, so this doesn't have anything to do with you. Thank you for posting, though. I really enjoyed seeing your vaguely mashed-out and totally irrelevant question about if my desire to improve my user experience is necessary or not.

I am with everybody else. I feel a block/ignore function is almost a requirement for any standard forum.

At this point I have to agree. I was already considering it anyway, I wanted gtx0 to keep at least some culture of the past and other reasons I mentioned before, but it's clearer than ever that there may be no other way.

yeah I seem to be one of the few if not the only holdout thinking a block function is a bad idea. B ut i'm going to say again I think it's an absolutely terrible idea.

Will be working on this tomorrow.

Enough for me to require this functionality in order to feel confident in continuing to post.

I agree with this. Some people just cannot listen to reason, so blocking/ignoring maybe the only solution.

You don't haaave to use it. Some people legit just won't listen to reason, so ignoring is the final option for a user besides moderation actioning if warranted.

They're just mad that I made good points against Republicans in World & Politics. The people in that forum went unopposed for so long, now that someone who finally made sense arrived it's not fun to be a Democrat or Republican anymore. Ignorance is bliss. And it's a lot harder to face the truth.

Haha, it's good to have you around mguy. But I don't think you're quite right on this.

This isn't even the thread to be posting this. Take up your arguments in that thread, please.

Anyway...

I don't see a block/ignore button being used for bullying and manipulation. I have more concerns with a karma/points system than a block button. This isn't Reddit or a social media site, so keep that shit far away.

Do not turn this thread into a political debate. Take it back to wherever thread it's relevant in.

I fully expect it to be used in such a way but at this point we'd jsut end up in a Monty Python contradiction loop.

Back when we had it before the site got redone a bit, someone has admitted to using it for exactly that before since you can see when people block you previously but it's whatever. people will still clearly do that without it regardless.

Grey's right it has been abused before and this sort of thign is no where near unprecedented.

Well, didn't know this at all till now. I have never encountered ignore/block abuse, only ignore/block evasion on forums and even chat rooms. After thinking more, I do see how ignores and blocks can be abused and misused on the forum.

Ya and to be clear, this isn't me arguing against it anymore it's just stating a fact of what happened.

There was a "likes" system on the old site -- wasn't a points-based thing though.

False. You were able to see how many people had blocked you, not who they were.

That's what I meant though, because you could see when someone blocks you they used when they knew someone had a fear of being blocked, then he later admitted to doing it for that reason.

I've got this partially in place now; it's a bit more complicated than I was expecting so I'll do more work tomorrow as well.

[EDIT: this was a response to the previous posts criticizing the idea, not to Riven.]

It's OK. If I can't block people I'll just leave.

Yeah I guess I"m probably not going to be aoru nd much if at all then. Still going to be arou dn the server but the site is oging to be somethign I'll be aro u dn a lot less if at all.

Just to be clear again, I'm not against the blocking idea just acknowledging it also comes with problems. We'll have problems either way.

@Riven:
I would like to be able to block either threads or people.
Or at least exclude them in searches!
Right now I can’t even look up people.
That’s another thing I used to be able to do but can’t.
I assume Riven is working on restoring such abilities.

So, so far:

  • User blocking (with a "Confirm" prompt) works -- this makes all messages by that user in the thread get replaced by a "Blocked message, Click to show" box.

  • Clicking "Click to show message" does what you'd expect.

  • The database is set up.

  • Snoozing doesn't work yet -- I have an idea of how to do the UI for this though (which is the hard part).

  • The functionality works, but only temporarily -- it doesn't send anything to the server yet. Not difficult, just involved.

  • Translating blocks back from the server in a thread is easy enough -- will get to that when I do the above.

  • Translating blocks into the site feed/search shouldn't be hard, especially since they use the same script.

  • Thread blocking also shouldn't be hard -- the issue is figuring out where to put the control for it.

  • There needs to be a User CP for adjusting or removing blocks of both types. User CPs are very easy to make on the new site. This one might be somewhat complex UI-wise, however.

  • I need to import blocks from the old site. Not hard to do since the databases are similar.

  • I haven't figured out how to keep blocked people from seeing things made by their blocker -- GTX0 doesn't have a normal concept of identity. Will probably be scrapping this idea purely on the basis of technical limitations. May explore it again later.

  • I'd like to have a "Post as Staff" option that circumvents blocks, but should only be used for moderator-type actions. It may also literally post as "Staff", in which case you just can't block that username.

Probably another day left on this, all in all.

    @Riven:
I don’t think I need any blocks imported.
If I still want something or someone blocked I cam just do it again.
    ....
    Thanks! Like CZM said.
    ....
(I also might not care whether someone I’ve blocked can see my posts. I can imagine wanting it but it’s not the main point.)

How do I delete a message of mine?
I accidentally double-posted the above message.
