Thinking of quitting my underpaid office job and becoming a taxi driver

Posted 1 Week ago by Unhappy Worker

Hi everyone

I am fed up of my office job. The workload has become too much and I am only getting paid minimum wage. Sometimes I have to stay late and its too much work for what I am getting paid. Basically the managers have made the work become too overcomplicated with nitpicky things and there is loads of sorting out intake sheets and delivery tickets which shouldn't be necessary.

I noticed I could get paid more for being a taxi driver and I enjoy driving. What are your thoughts and opinions about this?

Based solely on what you say here it looks like a good idea.
Is there a reason to hesitate?
Are there risks or costs you haven’t mentioned?

To add to what chiarizio has said, you should also probably talk to people in that line of work so you don't get blind-sided by unexpected challenges of the job.

Alot of times jobs can start out with, "Oh I'd enjoy that" and wind up being worse than expected (I've definitely got caught there myself).

Every job I've been in so far has a level of bullshit, and the key thing to figure out is how much of that you're willing to tolerate before you can't take it anymore. Though, I think with your current job you've made that decision already.

@Chiarizio

I am a PC tech in a small company does work for North Texas and Southwest Oklahoma. It's largely mostly jobs in in town with clients we have regularly.

I worked for Dell a few years ago. That was "I like working with computers and Dell is a big name" - wasn't as cracked up to be as I thought.

@Forte Lambardi:
I went to college in Sherman TX. Are you HQ’ed in the Sherman-Dennison area, by any chance?

Being a taxi driver should be good because I enjoy driving though. But yeah one of my old friends used to be a taxi driver. I will ask him about the job.

There are good things and bad things about every job but being a taxi driver, there shouldn't be too much stress.

@Unh. W.:
I think the high risk of being a victim of a crime might be a downside.

honestly cab drivers ought to be armed and I thought it wa spretty stupid to prohibit Uber drivers from carrying firearms incase soemthign happened.

@tnu: you may have a point.

@F.L.
I remember when their (Wichita Falls’s) version of “That’s My Home Town” mentioned their airport.
Probably that song is twice as old as you are.
....
I drove through there with a friend from El Paso and had a great steak dinner. Can’t remember the name of the restaurant and it might not be there any longer. I was a bit over 30 then and I’m a bit under 70 now so it was probably about 35 years ago. But the dinner was memorable, even if the restaurant’s name isn’t!
...
Btw when I was 30 my friend and I lived in Houston. We visited his family in El Paso and Colorado and his wife’s family in Utah and various places.
...
None of which helps U.W. decide whether or not to change jobs! But I said it anyway.
