sir walter scott and the continental romantics

Posted 3 Months ago by chiarizio

Why did so many Continental European composers, librettists, and choreographers of the Romantic period
create so many operas and ballets
based on the Scottish stories of Sir Walter Scott
and maybe othe Scottish stories in general?
Any ideas?
I have in mind
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucia_di_Lammermoor and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_donna_del_lago and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ave_Maria_(Schubert)#The_Lady_of_the_Lake_and_the_%22Ave_Maria%22 and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Sylphide .

Others may be mentioned
here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opera_in_Scotland#Operas_inspired_by_Walter_Scott and elsewhere in the same article.
