Community Decisions

Should GTX0 be geared towards kids or adults?

Posted 1 Month ago by Riven

Definitely interested in seeing how the community feels about this.

EDIT: "kids" probably refers to the 12-18 age bracket.

I also added an "A balance" option because that's how GTX0 was run in the beginning -- similar to GT's policies but with swearing and more relaxed moderation. Kind of a global version of how the special topics were run on Mike's GT.

When you reply here, please use the survey prompt below the text box to cast or change your vote. I'll still count it if you don't, but it'll make sure your vote is counted correctly and help organize things better as well. In addition to the three main options, this is also a free poll, so you can add your own unique answer if you don't like any of the three.

Note that any decision made here doesn't change existing decisions but may alter their implementation.

Like other community discussions threads, posts here will be moderated pretty strictly and at my discretion.

I can kind of understand both arguments here, so I'm going to hold on voting either way for now. I will point out though that anyone who came here through the conworlds merge (like chiarizio) wasn't on GT as a kid, and the advertising strategy had nothing to do with appealing to kids. I have some more of these planned whenever the site's features are at an acceptable level again. However I don't think our target audience matters as far as that goal goes.

If we can attract kids, especially teens/preteens, then I think we can have members who will want to discuss a variety of topics and around for a longer time. But holy hell, no way should we gear the entire site towards kids. We're all adults, here. With the consent system we can have adult forms separated. We need a healthy balance. The scale is just tipped too far on the adult side right now.

I approve of any advertising strategy that will attract more people who want to talk with people like me about the kinds of things I’m interested in.

In my experience when such people also talk about those other kinds of things they tend to do so in a way that makes me want to reply to them.

Past that, I approve of any kind of strategy that will give the site vitality.

So I’m going to say balance.

I dont want any kids exposed to the potential toxicity of this site/official GT discord.

Image what would have happened if certain elements of this site, knuckles/ cassy, were able to engage with kids when animated CP Porn/ beastiality was posted?/ rape threats were dmed. How fucked would that have been?

Fuck them kids for their own good.

Kids shouldn't be on the fucking internet to begin with. When they are, they shouldn't be on this site, or pretty much anywhere else that people like me post.

On the inverse side of it: I don't particularly want kids in here taking up a bunch of space with stupid shit. Seriously, I enjoyed activity when I was also a kid, but looking back at the content that got posted on GT back in the day, 95% of it was absolute trash. We need culture, not just activity.

Fuck them kids, both for their good and ours.

So, just on a weird note, if we did a compromise based on the existing set of votes, it would be a balance that leaned more towards the adult side ------ which perfectly describes the current site.

Oh, and I'm called elitist! 95% of GT was trash because 95% of GT was Pointless, and that forum was gold. This should be a place for teens at least. I don't think really young kids should be engaging, but GT's userbase is getting stale. We should have people who know more about remote learning than a VHS tape.

If you want culture, maybe you can stop swearing and post something constructive yourself.

Can we define what we're actually saying before I vote on this? Ie: If we decide Gtx0 should be 'for kids', what does that actually mean in terms of future site direction. Would recent community decisions regarding sexuality be invalidated?

What does a "balance" look like in practice? No cursing in titles/usernames? No sexual/offensive imagery?

What does "Adult" look like? Full on XXX extravaganza?

We don't even have a DM option right now.

There is an official GTX0 discord that has that option. Which was abused already and where porn can be posted freely.

Porn is banned everywhere except sexuality, which requires passing the waiver.

see above. PORN can be posted in the official GT discord

And so far no one has posted porn on it. Knuckles is gone, if he comes back I don't think that will happen again.

Xhin said exactly that everytime knuckles left and came back. And guess what? It happened again.

Most of your concerns and reasoning are completely invalid.

Not really. The most recent events were traumatic to literal adults who grew up in the wild west of the internet. I rather not have kids stumble into that.

GTX0 has had a history of luring mentally ill users. Due to that there are certain users who I dont want interacting with kids. Either virtually or in person.

It was still a bad idea for me to be on the internet, because there are ways that it fucked me up as a person that I'm still dealing with.

Xhin said exactly that everytime knuckles left and came back. And guess what? It happened again.

Wow... if Knuckles really is a repeat offender who sent porn to kids, there has to be some sort of permaban in place against people like that. How do you know about this?

GTX0 has had a history of luring mentally ill users. Due to that there are certain users who I dont want interacting with kids. Either virtually or in person.

OK, but you realize you're calling GTX0's community mentally ill, like the chance a teenager (let's stop using the world child) would encounter something terrible and definitely banned would be a certainty. And for that reason they should not ever be able to post or engage with the community at all. If mods do their jobs this wouldn't be a problem. Users have to be civil, and I don't think posting porn to traumatize adults and obliterate children counts as being civil. Nor do I think it would be frequent.

Keep in mind, Politics and Sexuality will remain 18. And we're only talking about gearing forums, etc, so it's not like we're luring children off the street so some creepy person here can show them porn. How often does porn get posted on this website, GTX0?

I'd like to point out between the real stuff I actually experienced in my life and the stuff I experienced here, there is no comparison. My childhood was unbelievably traumatic by comparison to GT. Kids and teens need an outlet. They need a place they can talk about the things they can't talk anywhere else. What happened in the past is not necessarily an indication of what will happen in the future. I've been on GT for close to 15 years now, and no one has ever shown me porn. I'm kind of disappointed. But even if it happened to one user, that didn't happen to me, and that didn't happen to many of you.

Absolutely fucking rich. I actually have a lot of forum projects that I'm planning out and will never fucking post here because I have 95% given up on this place.

Great. Just don't swear. We're discussing whether or not to allow teenagers and you had to come in guns blazing swearing at people and now you want to flush the whole site down the drain. I don't want Sexuality to go away any more than you do. I don't think anyone wants those forums to close. We had adult forums on the original Gametalk, too. Yeah, the one with children. We can't have an anything goes atmosphere if it's going to cross the line like this. But I ask again, why vote to make GT adult-oriented if children can just Google search us and come on here anyways? If you want to make sure kids don't see this stuff, wouldn't you actually be in favor of banning it and cleaning it up?

That'll happen when I come back. Probably first thing.

PORN?! ON Gametalk?!

I was not a teenager when I stumbled upon the original gametalk. I was very much a child so the term Child is still relevant.

It doesn't have to be relevant going forward. We had forums for Nintendo and Mario games and those forums were popular. PMTTYD? We don't have forums like that anymore, it's just general discussion. So naturally we're going to have an older userbase. If we don't want children, we don't need to gear ourselves for children, we can gear towards teens and up.

keep in mind there was grooming incidents in the original GT. I rather not run the risk of that happening if we open the site up to kids/ teenagers.

There were grooming incidents in the Catholic church, so where's the parade of people wanting to ban children from church? I didn't experience this, and I don't think these incidents are likely. Perhaps you saw stuff as a mod that most people did not see. You're extrapolating a few moments to make it sound like GT's entire history is filled with nothing but porn. But we both agree children shouldn't be on here anyways. If teenagers want to come here to talk about video games, science, and spirituality, why not?

Which is why I also don't want kids here. But I also don't want GT to die, and I definitely don't think attracting adults is the best move. That's not GT anymore, that's something else. If we allow swearing in forum titles, if we allow hate speech, if we allow uncivil behavior, if we allow freaking PORN, I mean, at that point we're not a constructive forum anymore, we'd be a cesspool of internet garbage and shitty behavior.

The Gametalk I know and love was a place anyone could come and talk about any subject they wanted... within some level of reason. That's the Gametalk I want to have stick around. It's not going to happen if we abandon all hope, cater exclusively to adults, and turn this place into a cesspool. And vice versa, it won't happen if we cater to kids so much we become too afraid to talk about anything. But surely teenagers should be mature enough to handle an internet forum without getting traumatized. And people who were young like me deserve a place to talk about these things. Sorry if this opinion is so controversial it might actually attract new members and increase activity, but I don't think we should allow porn or cater to children. GT should stay the way GT always was.

What age range are you talking about when you say "geared towards kids"? You talking like single-digit ages? Or like, 12-16 year olds?

I'd say it'd be good to have certain forums be more, not necessarily *geared* towards kids, but accessible for younger folks. Like the video game forum, for example, probably should be more Most Ages Friendly than Politics.

But, and I don't mean any offense by this, do you think either way you're going to noticeably impact how many new people come here? Just seems like the only time we've really seen some new folks show up is when you merged that other forum with it. I don't think this is really a place people stumble upon online as much as it is we come here because of the nostalgia.

You talking like single-digit ages?

God I hope not, I'll vote against that one right now if so.

I think mariomguy's general reasoning is the 12-17 age bracket -- that would match a lot of our ages when we first discovered GT.

One strange thing to think about though is I don't remember what demographic Mike's GT was targeting. There were things in place like swearing being on the filter, but then there was also apparently an age cutoff for becoming a moderator (I think it was 18, or 16+ with your parent's permission). Additionally, TGT required some kind of online payment, all of which require you to be 18+ to use.

It's possible that Mike was targeting adults (and those close), and then just had some things in place to make it more balanced for anyone who *wasn't* one.

But, and I don't mean any offense by this, do you think either way you're going to noticeably impact how many new people come here?

No and I've said as much. Additionally, I don't really have a horse in this race, which is why I haven't voted yet.

if we allow freaking PORN

Right, but only in the sexuality forum (which is behind an age lock) and only with special tags that indicate very clearly that you're opening porn and do so by choice (and maybe an optional plugin for those who don't want to manually open those images every time).

I don't see porn as a universally bad thing, I see sites that have it without any warning whatsoever as cesspools (looking at you, 00's ROM sites) and those that handle it well as a good part of the internet.

As I remember it, there were individual video game forums, and the younger kids gravitated towards PMTTYD, and specific Nintendo-centric forums while adults gravitated more towards the mature forums. The variety was able to attract different audiences, who would sometimes meet in forums like NGVS. But on the mature forums there wasn't a disclaimer page or anything, just a little notice/text/warning underneath the forum title. The moderating was pretty significant back in the day, so mature topics in mature forums wasn't always tolerated. And when it was, it caused backlash. Swearing wasn't allowed, and if you bypassed the swear filter you got banned. I was actually advocating for more free speech back then because it was too restrictive. Some mods were persistently ban-happy, sometimes without rhyme or reason. But we have the opposite problem now.

Right, but only in the sexuality forum (which is behind an age lock) and only with special tags that indicate very clearly that you're opening porn and do so by choice (and maybe an optional plugin for those who don't want to manually open those images every time).

Yeah, I mean, I don't think anyone is arguing for like, pornography and super adult content being posted in just every forum. But we got the warnings, right? I don't know that this forum is not already kinda balanced for teenagers and adults anyway. So I'll say "A Balance" but part of that balance does allow for the Sexuality forum as others have described it. And while I generally prefer post titles to not have swears in them, I got no fuckin' problem with swearing in the posts themselves. If teenagers are what we mean by "kids," then I see no reason why that shit would be a concern to begin with.

Given that I still don't understand the ramifications one way or the other, the safest bet is "A balance". Some forums can be more geared toward teens (video games), some can trend more adult (sexuality). Basically the status quo we currently have.

Kids or adults?

Kids is quite an offensive phrase, better would be adult or family-oriented, but family-oriented means no swearing. But you chose to put it to a vote and the community users here will NEVER choose to lose the ability to swear.

You cannot make this as successful as original gametalk, you chose to allow swearing, nazi content (at least for a while), etc. No parent would WANT or feel safe with their child on a site where the leader is too wimpy to choose anything and set the direction.

Fair points, Denida.

It does seem like there's at least a consensus against making it family-oriented to the exclusion of the adults here. Whether it focuses on a balance or caters towards adults will probably go into the RNG, but I'll let this thread breathe some more.

I'm also not quite sure what either of those options would look like in practice or how they would differ. Might have something to do with who I advertise to or how I advertise more than anything else, since the community is setting its own policies anyway.

I think it should be a balance where the actual site appearance and content doesn't deter either kids or adults, but I do believe the target audience should be kids (to get new members) so it should be a balance. I don't want this site to get so teen-oriented that we lose the older site population or turn long-time users away, but I do think it needs to also be attractive to new users, especially in the teenage range. Not sure how you're going to do this, but yeah.

So I'd say "balance--- but target audience kids"

It is impossible to have a balance without making the rest of the site suitable for kids/teenagers. Also, if we only target one group or another, you'll either be getting rid of the adult forums, which have more activity, or permitting more lousy behavior across the site. It's clear the majority of users don't want either of those two things to happen.

We need more description on what these terms mean because clearly you don't even know what we're voting for if you're bunching my votes and everyone else with the adults. The supermajority want a BALANCE. Adult forums behind age locks, more civility across the general site. What does a balance mean to you? If your definition of a balance is funky, I'm going with Kids, and the option where kids can enjoy the full site with the adult forums open.

This is a false dichotomy, Riven. Geez. If people wanted adults only they'd vote adults, the balance has to mean something.

Perhaps it would be best to have Denida speak her mind, just everyone is allowing S.O.H. speak his.

Old GT was come for the games, stay for the discussions. It targeted kids/teens and turned them into longtime members. We've grown up a lot since then. We need a balance. And I'd feel more comfortable discussing things around teens than literal kids. But if we target adults specifically, we're dead.

You ask my opinion and my response gets deleted and I get banned for an hour, great.

"Gametalk" implies a family friendly game site. If you want to gear it towards adult content change the name of the site to reflect the content of the site. Myself and many others left because of the non-family friendly Nazi sympathizers on this site.

Also I will point out the site rebranded to GTX0 around five years back. Calling it "gametalk" doesn't make sense without the 10,000$ domain name. And *definitely* doesn't make sense without a focus on games (which the other thread is for deciding on).

Psygnosis, posts critical of the site in general have their place, and this is not that place. Unless it's directly related to the topic at hand (which your other post is).

Denida, see the disclaimer at the bottom of the OP. I've made this very clear repeatedly in all community discussions you've participated in.

Since it's at my discretion, I don't need an explicit reason, but if you're curious it's because those posts are contributing to a toxic atmosphere, which breaks the spirit of the content policy about civility, if not breaking it outright.

What does GT stand for? I was assuming Gametalk all this time :|

Riven, there seems to be an overwhelming number of users who want to see the site geared towards a more general audience, similar to what Gametalk had back in the day. I'm OK if it's a bit more adult than what Gametalk used to be considering our current adult userbase, but we can't gear the entire site towards adults. We need to remain viable to a younger audience, at least teens and up. If this is what is meant by balanced, I'm all for it. Out of 13 (legitimate) votes, only 4 want to target adults specifically. The rest agree we need to gear younger. That's more than 71%, and growing the more votes come in.

I do not care? I just don't talk in private because you have it in your rules that any private conversations with you are ban-worthy offenses (have you forgotten your own rules?) Best to keep everything public, where you’re less likely (and able) to manipulate me into submission.

No. Plenty of people care about the site or even express criticism of it, but they do it constructively, in the right locations, and don't lump it in with personal attacks.

I just don't talk in private because you have it in your rules that any private conversations with you are ban-worthy offenses

If they break rules or admit to breaking rules, sure. If they don't, then there are no issues.

Best to keep everything public, where you’re less likely (and able) to manipulate me into submission.

Telling you my own personal feelings (as a user, no less) isn't a form of manipulation. Furthermore, I'm not out to manipulate people, into submission or otherwise. I'm out to solve problems.

And you’re only warning me NOW because I ‘criticized’ you for not doing what YOU said you would... which means the warning has no merit.

I'm not sure you're clear on how this works. I've given you every opportunity to change your approach, including by reaching out without any authority whatsoever, just to get the harassment to stop. It's clear that you're here just to be a troll, but on the off-chance that I (and several other admins and former admins) are wrong, I'm giving you a warning instead of taking action first.

If anyone has a private conversation with Riven about the future of the site, nothing's stopping them from posting the conversation here. It should be said all recordings of Congress proceedings and your local city hall meetings are made publicly available. This kind of conversation should not be hidden, as it severely impacts the direction of the site and all its users.

A plurality want a balance specifically, 7/15 votes. A 2/3rds supermajority want it not to be adult-oriented. Only 5/15 want it to be adult-oriented.

For me, anyways, a balance means we keep the adult forums hidden behind lock screens, but try to clean up the rest of the site so a general audience coming here won't be put off. My best friend from Texas wanted to see this site, and I was actually scared to show it to him. We have flame wars going on, lengthy discussions about permitting hate speech, lengthy discussions about whether adult content should be appropriate without a lock screen at all, etc. Whatever we do should attract new people. Unfortunately, if we specifically cater to the people already here, those decisions will make this site even more niche than it already is. We need to be attracting more people.

I'm pretty sure he explicitly stated somewhere (maybe in his "I updated the rules" post) that sharing private conversations publicly here is a violation of IIE. So while you're right, I don't trust it.

Agree *completely*. I have people I could encourage to check this site out, but I'm too ashamed with the state of things to show it to them.
As I said earlier, I think publicly having quick links to community discussions about the site pinned right on the homepage, e.g. "what is hate speech and should it be allowed here" is a HUGE deterrent to share this site. For the love of... throw that stuff into a forum and remind users it's been updated. Don't have that junk on the homepage. Optics matter, even if we don't want to acknowledge that.

Agree. This place will stagnate without new users. Even if some people are active regs, we still need to bring in new users.

I remember on old GT, there were regs and then there were new users who'd come in "waves", like I could mark years where there were influxes of new users. As regs left, new regs would come and the site was like a self-balancing organism.

I don't see that same sort of attrition or reach here and eventually, it'll matter.

Well, I disagree with hiding conversations that require a community vote. We need people to get involved and vote. The sad thing is the fact that this required a vote at all. And the fact that the vote landed in favor of hate speech makes the optics even worse.

Yeah, I think there was a big push to recruit people to GT as well. But as it stands, this isn't the kind of place a lot of people without attachment would want to stay. At least on first glance.

I mean, yeah, it's sad that we need to vote on this stuff. I agree. I think that's a pretty bad state of things.

As for hiding things, I basically mean I think he should have a pinned quick-link on the homepage that says "Community feedback needed" or "New community poll up (date of poll inception)" with a link to the community feedback forum. I don't think we should have something on the homepage that says "Define hate speech". I agree community involvement is incredibly important if that's the direction the site's going. I just don't think the home page should have something like "Should Nazi content be allowed?" "Should hate speech be allowed?" and other such past examples.

Yeah, I think there was a big push to recruit people to GT as well. But as it stands, this isn't the kind of place a lot of people without attachment would want to stay. At least on first glance.

Agree. And think part of this is because this place doesn't have a very clear "motive" / "target" / "goal" / "direction".
The original was very specifically, very clearly *Game*Talk. The mission was right there. Even the original GTX0 still had a lot of gaming forums as you can see on the Wayback Machine. I can't exactly put nostalgia aside and overlook the fact that I liked that more because it resembled original GT, but it was, at the very least, active.

Some of these issues were OG GT issues as well. For instance, threads from the general VG discussion were moved to the Nintendo-specific forum which was far more dead. So let's not pretend the original GT had "activity" and was free of dead forums. There were thousands of dead forums. The userbase was large, but scattered and spread somewhat thin.

We need to get out of the mindset that this site is for 10 users and into the mindset of how to make it more appealing for a few million more.

Be real with me, did you ban me out of anger back then?

Anger is not an emotion I was feeling at the time.

but I have *a lot* to say about this, Riven, for very obvious reasons

We should probably explore that.

Check the "should GTX0 have Mediators" thread - where you tried to pull me into Discord to talk to you privately because I was expressing dissent for the direction you wanted to take the site. I hold that this was an attempt to stop me from publicly standing by my opinion.

That was an attempt to ask you wtf you were doing, since you were very outspoken publicly and meanwhile very supportive privately. I tend to not trust people who I perceive as two-faced, but I guess if you were afraid of being banned for expressing your views privately, that makes more sense.

So, I'll go on record here and say that any view you express privately is not a bannable offense. If you admit to breaking rules in a message to me privately though, that does count as proof enough to issue bans over it. That's the purpose of IV-D, it isn't to silence private dissent. People express dissent all the time privately.

I won't go further than that because it'd be beneath me to go into these shortcomings in greater detail.

Again, this is something we should explore. Not that I particularly hold your opinions in high regard, but you have occasionally made good points, so the deeper you go the better they will be.

Do you consider someone saying your decision will be bad for the site a personal attack?

No, however I would consider "all of your decisions are bad" to be one. Which you've used before -- in contexts that aren't just about the site.

You've also said that rules are under your discretion, so you keep changing your mind

Changing the rules is under my discretion -- however that involves actually changing the rules and making an announcement about it. I don't plan on doing that again for a long long while, though I may make additions or minor alterations (and announce them).

Site posts or posts about the site are definitely under my full discretion -- you'll find though that I don't tag dissent purely because it dissents. I'm not anywhere near that petty.

What are you talking about? Don't remember you talking about that.

That would be the private message that's probably public by now as I've shared it a lot and I'm assuming you have as well.

but you should spend that time listening

I um... fundamentally don't agree with you with a lot of what you have to say. We also haven't spoken in any way that isn't completely dysfunctional, so I really have no reason to look past that and listen. You have however occasionally made good points, which I have listened to.

Just to be clear though, I don't have to listen to you. I don't have to respect your opinion. If you want either of those things, then it's your responsibility to change your approach, not mine.

I'll get back to this thread when I get back, and then also maybe to the actual topic. IRL is still a bit crazy.

Uh... no. While I respect that you might've perceived it like a chance to figure out why I was being two-faced, that's not what was happening. Here's my perspective:

I was supportive in private because I felt like you were trying your best during the whole Grey thing and was supportive of your efforts with that, especially with how the whole community was so hard on you for how you were handling things. I can be supportive of some things you do without supporting everything you do.
That said, I was consistently *not* supportive of the Mediator concept...
Yet in the midst of trying to convince me to come around privately (which you spent 2 HOURS doing), you told someone in a DM that you'd love to make me a mediator, even knowing I was against that on a fundamental level.

So no, you wanted to message me to see if you could convince me to come around to *your* point of view to support you because you were being all "I'd hire Weird Occurance right now" to somebody at the time. Thanks, by the way, for sabotaging my reputation with the discord via that conversation you were having. I *really* appreciated that.

If they break rules or admit to breaking rules, sure. If they don't, then there are no issues.

You've also said that rules are under your discretion, so you keep changing your mind and I don't trust you as far as I can throw you, and sorry to say, but my muscles in my arm are not strong enough after my incident, which had me paralyzed once, so can't throw anyone, let alone you very far...

Telling you my own personal feelings (as a user, no less) isn't a form of manipulation. Furthermore, I'm not out to manipulate people, into submission or otherwise. I'm out to solve problems.

What are you talking about? Don't remember you talking about that.

If you talk to others about me, I am flattered, but you should spend that time listening, rather than thinking about how you can argue against it...

There's a right way to do this that doesn't involve harassment. Look at literally any other user here whatsoever who's criticized the site recently such as Psygnosis, mariomguy, or weird occurance.

I never harassed you. And, while they don't get tagged, you ignore all their points you don't wish to answer.

Be real with me, did you ban me out of anger back then?

He returned out of GTX0 after ignoring it for a week, making this big reply. Never bothered to check this thread, only did when he saw I replied... just saying.

Check the "should GTX0 have Mediators" thread - where you tried to pull me into Discord to talk to you privately because I was expressing dissent for the direction you wanted to take the site. I hold that this was an attempt to stop me from publicly standing by my opinion. Unless you can provide a strong counter-argument, I'm standing by this rationale.

My point exactly, he is as scheming as someone else I knew, which is why I see right through him. It helps that he isn't even as good at it.

That said, I can see where Denida's coming from with wanting to keep everything public.

Yes, I don't trust him in private.

Aw, Weird you took the 91st reply, guess I have to wait for him to tag enough to 90 again.

No. Plenty of people care about the site or even express criticism of it, but they do it constructively, in the right locations, and don't lump it in with personal attacks.

As for insults, if I wanted to do personal attacks, I would have a field day... you keep giving me examples every time you post.

I think this has been up more than long enough.

Matt Gaetz's vote was removed, as he was an alias of someone else (it's also irrelevant since that side only received two votes). The Gaming Master is actually a legitimate user under a different name.

As it currently stands, there are 7 votes in favor of a balance and 5 votes in favor of an adults-based site. While I sort of agree with the balance argument, I don't have a strong opinion there (not even enough to cast a vote). So given the lack of consensus, I'm going to instead leave it up to RNG -- all post times including this one will be summed and used as the seed.

With a seed of 181242027708:

GTX0 will pursue a balance in terms of age demographics from now on. As pointed out, this doesn't actually change that much; it's a branding and advertisement targeting thing, not a features or content thing.

This decision is now final, but can be reviewed one year from now -- 4/21/2022.
