@Ratatoskr (et al); Crusader Kings?

Posted 1 Week ago by chiarizio

@Ratatoskr, or anyone else:
Is there anything else interesting about Crusader Kings you might want to tell me or us?

I mean it's a really cool dynasty simulator. You don't really play as a character or a country like other strategy games, but as a family. You do have a single character at any given time but it changes frequently. Your goal isn't really to take over the world (you'll never be able to succeed if you try) but rather to forge a lasting, prominent family name in the middle ages. Losing can be fun, you don't have to win every war. In most cases it doesn't end your game and adds some flavor and struggle. Maybe you decide the guy who beat you and took your land would be a good liege you'd like to serve, he may even put you on his council. Or maybe you ally yourself with one of their rivals so you have backup the next time they try to take more of your land. You have to manage your family, arranging marriages sometimes days after the child was born. The game ends when you die and do not have an heir in your own dynasty. Each character you play will be unique with their own relationships and rivalries, and some times one of your children may just be really bad so you pay the nanny to smother your 2 year old in his sleep.

I want to play it and am trying to decide whether or not to buy it and download it.
How would I do that?
I haven’t done anything like that since before moving here and before switching from a desktop to a tablet.
I used to play Civilization on Steam but I don’t have them any more.

Don't have what? Steam?

Right. Nor Civilization.

Can you not recover your Steam account? The game should still be in your library, so you could just re-download it.

I don’t know. I no longer have the desktop PC I used.

You just need to remember your username and you can recover it from the associated email address. I'd recommend setting up multi-factor authentication with your phone as well.

When you say you switched to a Tablet, are you referring to an iPad or a Android OS device?

Slight shift in subtopic.

Can a Crusader Kings dynasty have a rule that the head of the dynasty is always female?
Can they have a rule that the head is always a celibate man?

What inheritance rules can they have?
In particular for instances, can they have all of those on this incomplete list?
  • Absolute primogeniture — heir is oldest child regardless of sex
  • Absolute ultimogeniture — heir is youngest child regardless of sex
  • Female primogeniture — heir is oldest daughter
  • Female ultimogeniture — heir is youngest daughter
  • Male primogeniture — heir is oldest son
  • Male ultimogeniture — heir is youngest son

    Another possible rule is the heir is the current head’s oldest sister’s oldest son.
    That rule, or some modification of it, might be required when the head is always a celibate male.
    But it also might be required in other circumstances.
    ….
    Yet another rule is that the heir is always the current head’s adopted child (maybe his adopted son, for instance)

    All of those have applied IRL to RL dynasties.

    What about purchasing the heir? Mamelukes in Egypt did that. The Slave Dynasty in India did that.

    Can the heir be elected from among a limited set of their predecessor’s relatives?
    For instance, maybe anyone whose parent or grandparent or greatgrandparent or GGGParent was a head-of-dynasty, can be elected; the heir is elected from among all such people.
    Kings of Scotland were elected from among the derbfine, which was everyone whose four-or-fewer-generations-ago ancestor was a king.

    Or maybe, if they’re all celibate, they can be elected from among a college of electors or Cardinals or princes or something.

    What your looking for is Enatic succession, and it's rare with starting nations. But you can reform your government enough times to make it happen if you're dedicated enough to it. There's also a game rule that flips the gender discrimination laws for all countries.

    I think the only celibate nation is The Vatican. I don't recommend going the celibate route if you can help it as it will lead to an early game over.

    The Vatican may be the only celibate dynasty in the game; but in history Montenegro was also.

    Thanks for the info and the link!

    Ok first, as Axem and Ratatoskr said, go to steam.com to recover your account and reset your password.

    After you have done that, download the steam link app:
    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/steam-link/id1246969117
    Then log in with your recovered account. I’m not sure how many steam games will work on your iPad But atleast you’ll have access to them to know.

    Edit: I just realized you’ll need some kind of computer running steam for this to work.

    @True: Thanks!
    I’ll try that. Or, something based on that, if no longer having my desktop stops that exact technique.
