Politics separate from Religion

Posted 3 Weeks ago by chiarizio

I think it would be worthwhile to separate the P&R thread into a Politics thread and a Religion thread.
....
If there were enough active people, or active enough people, on the Religions thread, it might be worthwhile to separate it into a God-and/or-Gods thread and a Spirits-Souls-Afterlives thread (each hyphen standing for “and/or”).
...
That’s what I think. I know at least one other active gtx0er doesn’t totally disagree with me. I don’t know if even one totally agrees (besides myself, of course!).

A lot of people might agree with this. They did used to be separate here and elsewhere.

Don't disagree, but didn't it get mashed up because neither forum was getting a ton of traction and they were deemed to have enough overlap?

I mean there's no harm in trying it, with the site activity in general as low as it is. If nothing else it would get religion/spirituality posts off the disclaimer system.

Yeah, I definitely don't have a preference or care one way or the other. Just sorta funny.

By the way, are forum links still at the top? It kinda looks like they are, but it all gets cut-off from the "Log-out / User CP / Mod...et cet" bar. Is that a thing unique to Chrome?

I think the politics is getting way too much traction and the religion is being suppressed by people’s unwillingness to join the politics things.

Look at the last several religion posts. Those people seem to disagree with each other in a manner that reflects serious interest in what each other think and why each other think that.

Compare to the last several politics threads. Fully half those posts seem to be by people who just wish each other would shut up.

I am afraid to reply to some of the religion posts for fear of drawing the attention of someone who’ll post about politics on a religion thread.

Yeah, I suppose it has been a while since one of the more angry religious posters stopped coming around. (There was a user who pretty much chased people off and made it unbearable to have even well-intentioned religious discussion.) So I can see the potential of separating it. Traditionally, there has been a fair amount of crossover in the Politics users and Religion users, but outside maybe that one user in question, people are pretty good at compartmentalizing the forums.

That might work differently with the "only civil discussions allowed" content policy.

Still, though, discussing anything political whatsoever in a post-2020 world seems like it's inevitably going to result in emotional arguments and name-calling. I could definitely see the need for separating those topics back out.

I'm going to leave this post up for 24 hours at least, but we do all seem to be in agreement here.

It is interesting. I remember a time where religion debates were more likely to get heated than political ones, particularly atheism vs. theism debates.

I have little to say about spiritual topics at this point, but I am all for giving it its own forum again. Like chiarizio hinted at, maybe people would be more willing to post interesting/thought-provoking things if we separate it from politics. Could also be a good place to discuss things like philosophy and our more general views on the world and life separate from politics. I think it would be healthy.

So anyway, will do sometime today. I figured this might happen eventually so a lot of the old posts will split off cleanly like they were never in P&R to begin with.

Politics and religion should be separate forums. I am an atheist, so I wouldn't have much to add to the discussion, but resurrecting the spirituality forum might bring back some interesting threads and that's much-needed for the site.

Additionally, it wasn't just the user Jet Presto's referencing that was responsible for driving the religion forum into the ground. There were a few others, but they're gone or mostly gone; without them choking the conversations, the discourse should be worthwhile.
