Nintendo announces Switch OLED

Posted 2 Weeks ago by ShadowFox08

7 inch OLED screen with 64GB storage and ethernet support in the dock. $350. hardware specs are otherwise the same as previous models with the TX1 chip. This is essentially a Switch XL. Coming out in October 8, 2021 with Metroid Dread.

https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/nintendo-switch-pro-is-officially-announced-as-oled-model/

Switch with ampere tech exists I'm sure, as insiders have said before. maybe 2022 or 2023. Thaf would be the Switch 2 model. The aula model (Switch OLED) was datamined by hackers a few months back.

$350 is a bit much. Nintendo is really confident. But who will buy this model? current switch owners don't need to, and I don't see casuals getting it. maybe it will replace the current hybrid model in time and didp to $300(lol) when switch 2 arrives in a year or two. sigh

Basically this is Nintendo being Nintendo.

It has a LAN port in the dock which is nice, and I find the new dock nice to look at, but not enough to buy another Switch (until mine explodes).

My guess it's Nintendo's attempt to keep the Switch relevant I guess. Although I don't know that this was needed as some folks I spoke with found the Switch Lite relevant (and useful) enough.

I told you that nintendo would disappoint you @shadow

I am not sure why the LAN port matters. There are 3rd party dongle LAN ports that are prob better than this one.

I am not sure who this Switch is for. If a new switch buyer asks me if they should get it, I would tell them no. They are better off taking their $350 buying a switch base model, sd card and a game for the price of the OLED model.

I will get it but not until there is a special edition one. Probably there will be pokemon and zelda themed ones this year.

The LAN port should have been an inclusion from the start instead of having to buy an additional adapter. Also there was a time where the LAN Adapters were super expensive (or out of stock 90% of the time).

Also when converting from Ethernet to USB there's a bit of overhead (honestly not sure how much) so it would avoid some of that (how much if any at all is questionable as I haven't noticed it personalty).

@SOH Brah, Nobody knew, and everybody lost. This model feels so useless. I'm more pissed off Nintendo had the balls to advertise this for $350 and not $300. They are getting really cocky like they did with the Wii. I don't know how they can expect to keep switch's momentum for another 2 years like this. Hope it bites them in the ass.

I still think the more powerful model from bloomberg and other sources reported exist, but it will no longer be considered a pro model, but actually switch 2.

I mean I pointed it out multiple times. So uh... I knew? Nintendo has a history of doing things like this lol.

this is more like likely the case. Granted I doubt it will come close to the specs that were "leaked". I think a Switch 2 will look just like the OLED Model and slightly stronger.

At this point I just wanna be able to run first party titles at a stable frame rate ffs.

To be fair, OLED screens are more expensive than LCD, so the price hike makes sense. Plus, it has double the storage, and the OLED screen drains less energy, so the battery lasts longer.

They could have just have made it "slightly stronger" with this model. In fact the 16/12nm mariko chip on the V2 switch, switch lite and this switch OLED has the ability to overclock to 650 GFLOPs on the GPU and up to 1.78 Ghz on the CPU. But they won't do it.

Also important to point out that GBC, Dsi and new 3DS exist, and they are more powerful than the GB, DS and regular 3DS. Hell the New 3DS got a 2x bump to ram, 1.5x bump to GPU and a whopping 3x in CPU.. But for the new 3DS it was wasted potential.. they used it for the new 3D tech as well as framerates and some textures.

The Switch could have gotten a pro model, but its too late at this point if it didn't release by the end of this year. A portable nvidia ampere (people are speculating nvidia tegra orion s 15 watt) is certainly possible for a Switch 2 release though, and it can indeed give us xbone to ps4 specs in docked mode, and without factoring DLSS.

Going to call it now. We will also be disappointed by the Switch 2 when it comes to specs.

I would be happy if it can run xcom 2 without being a buggy mess.
