my webcomic

Posted 8 Months ago by Aviatrix

Hey all! Thought I would share with you my webcomic, called 'Fury of the Dawn'. It's got sky pirates, alt-history and lots and lots of god rays. What's not to love?

Sounds neat! Will check it out.

Your website isn't working by the way.

It's working on Firefox and Chrome on my end? Hmm. Weebly sucks, at any rate; I'm looking in to other options. It's just that their UI is so damn user friendly.

I used the www.furyofthedawn.com url to read(look at?) the first several(few?) pages.
The art is beautiful!
I think the writing is also well-done.
I’m intrigued by the world-building.
I look forward to having time to read more!

You've been wanting to finish a webcomic for years now. I remember we threw aroudn some ideas one based aorund a crappy short story I wr ote in high school and the other....Well th at's a long story that you may or may not remember. I remember seeing old designes of a woman in a bloodstained coat that you made like thee to four years ago. Sort of had a Two Fisted tale vibe that yo u would get from an old adventure serial damn sure I at least remember that much

@Aviatrix:
I’m at the page where Edmond Locke is hanging upside-down in front of all those big gears with a crescent wrench in his hand.
How do I get past that?

@chiarizio

It's cover art for the next chapter! This is a new character named Ben. You'll get to meet him once I get off my procrastinating butt and draw more. I felt weird about posting just a new cover and this is exactly why lol

@Aviatrix:
So that’s Ben, not Edmond? Oops!
.....
Is Captain Locke modeled on you?

I am neither tall, hot, nor redheaded... I actually had Rita Hayworth in mind for modeling her.

@Aviatrix:
I meant a model for her personality.
She flies; you’re an Aviatrix; I thought you might have other interests in common.
(Though I’ve seen nothing yet to indicate she writes or draws or paints. Maybe she does, though?)

(I couldn’t tell from your picture how tall you are, but I could see you’re not red headed; and you don’t have any gray streaks as she does now (but didn’t at the time of her husband’s death).)

———

Anyway;
Rita Hayworth, huh? She’s a bit too old-school for me to have thought of her; I’m only 68 y/o!
But maybe I’ll see some of her movies now. Quarantine is a great opportunity to catch up on her oeuvre.

....

Since Captain Locke was a governess for Edmond before they married, I’d guess she has stepchildren?
Will I find out if I keep reading?

You're sweet.

As far as her internal character... I've always thought of Ailbhe Locke as the personification of unresolved grief. She has some trauma in her life, and I like to think it's the kind of helpless trauma that is synonymous with being a woman in the 19th century; the shock of sudden widowhood is a real universal pain, and, historically, it's an event that tends to spawn some nasty mean female pirates (look at Ching Shih and Jeanne de Clisson, if you want some badass further reading). And while she's not a terribly empathetic, or emotionally available person, her reactions to pain are predictable: the bloody coat, for instance, I borrowed from Jackie Kennedy; when JFK was shot, she refused to remove her bloody Chanel suit until the next president was sworn in. I find that to be very expressive.

As far as back story, I have an eventual prequel planned that really focuses on Ed being the central character. A very 'The Prestige' esque mad scientist's tale. At this rate, I'll be retired by the time I get to it. :) There is very much a family for them, I'll say that much, and these people are involved in 'Fury of the Dawn'.

Also I'm drunk. That was a book.

Ailbhe is pronounced Alva and is Old Irish for “white” — right?

@Aviatrix:
I never heard of Jeanne de Clisson before!
Charles de Blois (and King Philip VI) seeem to have ignored Machiavelli’s advice on three counts:
1. Only execute people you can prove something against.
2. If you do have to kill someone it doesn’t hurt you to be polite about it.
3. If you have to kill someone, for goodness’ sake leave their heirs and their women alone. No-one can protect you against someone who doesn’t mind dying as long as he gets to kill you.

I’d heard of Ching Shih before, though I had forgotten her name.
(Was she also the basis for the Dragon Lady in Terry and the Pirates?)
Her code, including requiring Pirate husbands to be faithful to their pirate wives, and prohibiting crimes against civilian villagers who helped the Pirates, was pretty famous; that’s how I recognized her.

Thanks for adding some excitement to my Saturday!

@Aviatrix:
I tried to look up Rita Hayworth movies, but the only one that came up that actually had Rita Hayworth in it doesn’t really;
it’s a docudrama about her that’s rated only 3 stars.
So I decided to watch Ava instead.
It’s about a woman and her mother and sister, all of whom are seriously red-haired.
That’s the closest they come to being Rita Hayworth.
OTOH Ava is probably kinda like Ailbhe. She’s deadly and her name is kinda similar.
