mass effect remastered trilogy coming in 2021

Posted 4 Months ago by Q

All three mainline Mass Effect games in a single package

A remastered version of the Mass Effect trilogy is coming to console and PC in 2021, Electronic Arts and BioWare confirmed Saturday.

Titled Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, the bundle will include all three mainline Mass Effect games — Mass Effect (2007), Mass Effect 2 (2010), and Mass Effect 3 (2012). The collection does not include Mass Effect: Andromeda (2017). In addition to the single-player and DLC for those three games, Mass Effect Legendary Edition will include all promo weapons, armors, and packs, “all remastered and optimized for 4k Ultra HD,” BioWare said on its website.

“For many months now, our team at BioWare has been hard at work updating the textures, shaders, models, effects, and technical features of three enormous games,” said Casey Hudson, studio GM of BioWare. “Our goal was not to remake or reimagine the original games, but to modernize the experience so that fans and new players can experience the original work in its best possible form. It’s been amazing to see the adventures of Commander Shepard take on new life in super-sharp resolution, faster framerates, and beautiful visual enhancements. As game developers, we always hope that our games will transcend their original platforms. Having the opportunity to remaster the trilogy means that the fruits of a decade of our work will live on, and will be experienced better and clearer than ever before.”

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition will be available spring 2021 for PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One, with “forward compatibility and targeted enhancements” on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.

BioWare also confirmed Saturday that a new Mass Effect is in development, and revealed early artwork for the game.

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition follows two other recent remastering efforts from Electronic Arts: Burnout Remastered, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered, and Command & Conquer Remastered. EA has signaled a remaster of the Mass Effect trilogy as far back as 2016.

Me too but a switch version hasn’t been announced yet.

Love Mass Effect 2 and 3. :)

I did too but the ending of 3 was a mess. But overall the gameplay and graphics were great. It’s shame we won’t be getting multiplayer for ME3.

I thought the ending was decent enough. Depending on what you chose.

I think the ending was a mess for the following reasons (caution as there are spoilers for a 8.5 year old game):

The ending was a mess because none of the decisions you made up the the point where you choose between the 3 options affects their outcome much other than what characters show up afterwards. You could be good shepard or evil shepard, female or male and the ending is mostly the same. It was also critically panned when the game first came out to the point that Bioware released some free updates in an effort to have the ending make more sense but it didn't help much.

However, like I said, the gameplay and graphics were great and still hold up fairly well to this day. Almost all of the characters were interesting and I definitely replayed the mass effect to keep Wrex alive. And the universe felt more like Star Trek than almost any star trek game ever made. Even the Alliance emblem looks like the one from star trek. SO i'll probably pick up the ME:LE at some point.

Mass Effect 3 is the best one in the trilogy for me.

It had the best gameplay, best music, best character arcs (which actually were mostly just character arcs wrapping up from the first two games--but the payoff was all great), best graphics, and Shepard was FINALLY more interesting and less bland blank slate generic hero character...thing.

The ending? It was fine. It wasn't the most mind-blowing ending ever, but it didn't offend me either. I also played the updated version of the ending. Actually, no, that's wrong. I played and watched the original ending first THEN I checked out the updated ending.

It seriously wasn't that offensive of an ending. The ending really wasn't enough to kill the experience of the entire game for me despite my choices from the entirety of the series not affecting the ending.

It was very disappointing that there wasn't a proper final boss. Everything else came together pretty decently to me, though. (Keep in mind I had played the games after all the updates and it was a very unbiased playthrough as I have only played each game once.)

Also, Mass Effect 3 was NOT critically panned. In fact, it looks like it might be the highest rated in the trilogy by critics (and rightfully so). You are probably thinking of fanboys whining about "BUT MUH ENDING!!!!" being the result of Bioware updating the ending, not critics complaining about the ending.

I apologized, I didnt mean the game itself was critically panned. I meant that the ending was. There was so much controversy surrounding it when the game came out that people were blaming EA for it. And many articles were written about it:

Dont get me wrong, I loved the whole series to the point where I bought each game individually when they came out and then bought them as a Trilogy Pack. I also loved that the begining of ME3 started with the Reapers invading earth and proceeding to Miley Cyrus the shit out of everything. Which really set the stakes high and send the message to the player than anything can happen and shit has gotten real. I think this is why the ending was such a letdown to fans. All 3 games did such a great job of world and character building, setting up all these story arcs to then bungle it all in the end. The Mass Effect Trilogy is all about the that old adage that Life Is About The Journey, Not The Destination. You play ME3 for everything I just said and only play the ending when you've done everything and are ready to bookend the experience.

Hell, I got so into the series story that after beating all 3 games, I learned of how you can have the GETH join your side with all of the other races so I started the whole series over and did just that.

My biggest criticism of Mass Effect 3 wouldn't be the ending but the fact that they lost their nerve with the choices mattering.

Killed the Rachni Queen? No matter we found another one!

Mordin is dead? Not to worry we found a stand-in.

Yea some of these things (Mordin in particular) have emotional implications for players who became attached to certain things... But overall it's difficult to feel like my choices throughout the trilogy actually mattered at all because ultimately they don't.

This is an issue throughout the trilogy though. ME2 completely ignored some of the potential ME1 endings. One of which I'll never forget is Udina declaring they'll build a new human lead council and there's definite implications that you should expect humanity to be in a larger position of leadership after it... Granted ME2 avoids much of that side of the story, but it's also pretty obvious the status quo is resumed regardless of the ending you get on ME1. Heck even the two councils you can have forME3 are identical, they have the exact same dialogue don't they?

So yea, that's the biggest flaw for me. The games were built on this idea that your choices would matter as the trilogy progressed, but in reality they mostly only mattered for trivial stuff. (Except Mordin :'( he mattered).

Also the reason the Mass Effect 3 ending sucks is because it's basically a Deus Ex Machina out of nowhere. If they'd spent a bit of time setting that particular ending up during the trilogy it would've been received better.

They spend ME3 setting one the Crucible as a superweapon only to 180 it with the AI thing. Plot twists are often good, but this particular one wasn't. It also didn't make a lot of sense within the existing setup (if it was always in the Citadel why did it even allow itself to be locked out of the controls???).

Then there were the weird things like where was the Normandy even going? In the original ending you last seem them involved in the battle, then suddenly they're flying away somewhere? They did correct this in the new ending.

Whilst the three colour ending got a lot of the focus I don't think it was the worst part. Though it kinda wasjjst "and then space magic solved everything" :P

Oh and no final boss. RIP Marauder Shields.

My only issue with 3 is the weird glitch for the ninja girls character story. You have to activate 2 terminals in a certain order and if you mess up you wont be able to continue her story. Meaning you cant rely on her alliance in the final show down.

They always do.

Honestly I forgot all about her and her story line. I definitely don't recall that glitch so I must have gotten lucky enough to activate the terminals in the right order.
