But what if the ants want to torture you and eat you alive causing a very short life ended in pain for you and everyone you cared about? These things will sooner or later impact you and those you care about personally. Sure you can have some escapism but totally disregarding it is foolish imo.

Don't know if that'll always be the case. But there are plenty of discord servers, social media groups and whatever that at least try to avoid politics entirely even if they don't always succeed. That's probably what you're looking for.

I think you can even if you talk about politics really. That's been my experience more than a few times anyway. If they respect you enough they'll at least understand where you're coming from and vice versa.

As for me I've been working on the process of cutting people out of my life altogether they're unreliable nad untrustworthy and ultimatly they're just something else you'll have ot "move on" from.

I also genuinely believe you can be friends with someone who disagrees with you politically. But only if you both shut up about politics.

My friend (and co-worker) are on opposite sides of the political spectrum (he's a Republican and I am a damn dirty liberal). Yet we aren't at each other's throats.

We also know each other long enough and can talk about politics and stay civil. We also both realize there's a middle to each side that people don't seem to realize anymore (as because everything is hyper-polarizing these days).

No, you really can't escape politics because, much like everything else, it's an "interest" and some people get more heated about it than others (which I honestly finally a bit silly as politics is not the end-all be-all of someone).

People forget that they're gonna be dead in 50-70 years. That the politics of the planet really aren't your problem.

Politics is not ultimately my problem, but nothing is, which makes this a trivial observation.

While I am here, however, I am very capable of suffering from the product of the irrationality of others (and myself). One of the aspects that this manifests in (and more pointedly in America recently) is in politics.

There's certainly nothing worth fighting or dying over unless it affects you and your friends and family directly.

...yes, which is why I am trying to prepare myself for that sort of eventuality, because there is strong indication that there is going to be armed protest carried out by groups of people who recently displayed the willingness to attempt to overturn democratic process of the highest station in American politics.

Your own seemingly insignificant local problems are far more important than the global problems you couldn't possibly hope to fix. Your interests are important. Your life is important. You're not some worker ant trying to protect the nest. You're a human being. A sentient creature with your own personality. Not some unit of legion in a hive mind collective.

Correct, but my life can be affected by what other people do.

Cope.

Armed protests have happened all over America all fucking year,

Which is why I beefed up my personal preparation many months ago. More people being retarded with their use of force for political means indicates a bigger problem, regardless of their alignment.

With that being said, let's look at the sides:

CHAZ: planting gardens, performing live music, holding public discourses, diplomatically discussing the reduction of the size of the contested area with local authorities.

MMM: violently assaulting the nation's capitol with plans to lynch and terrorize elements of the nation's leadership in order to directly harm the mechanism of democracy and retain power for a spastic manchild, resulting in a unbelievably huge compromise of national security.

but as soon as they're done by right wing folks they're suddenly a problem I guess.

No, it's just that when people start talking about right wing people doing it, people like you start complaining about people talking about it, snowflake.

Nothing you can possibly say will keep me from being prepared to defend myself and my people, or from being as open about it as I wish to be. At this point, it's not about egotistical political bickering around the watercooler like football fans for your favorite team, it's about literal personal safety.

Why do I suspect you're omitting a loooooooooot of details here?

Because I want to make him work for every point. While I omitted details, the worst examples of political violence from both sides are drastically unequivalent anyway, so it's not like he's going to do anything but knock down an irrelevant roadblock that's not related to his point anyway. I'm not dishonest, I'm just a bastard.

Speaking of which, what is his point anyway? I'm not going to change the course of my life the slightest bit for the whining of a neurotic forum goblin.

Looks like he's nuking his comments anyway, so I think this conversation is over.

Make sure you click "Post Reply" only once. New site doesn't have the fix the old site did, but won't be hard to reinstall.

I actually made a post on ask reddit to tell the last time any argument on the internet has changed their way of thinking in any meaningful way, and nobody gave me an answer that any argument had.

Really makes you think, that sites formatted like this, are just a waste of time. Or maybe it doesn't. Either way I won't be able to convince you that it does or doesn't. XD

But as long as you get that ad hominem in there you can still have fun or make the other person look silly.

I've actually changed the way I think about things after listening to a bunch of podcasts produced by the Atheist Community of Austin. These podcasts are hosted by people who have studied philosophy and done public discourse for years, so they have developed some very, very strong ideas.

I've also changed the way I think about things after reading some older philosophical essays, chiefest among them being the Myth of Sisyphus by Camus.

I've also changed the way I think about things after months of very, very uncomfortable therapy.

So, generally speaking, my threshold for what actually changes my mind is way, way above having a little snark exchange with some people on a backwater gaming forum.

It's never too late for political apathy, and it's probably the best thing you can do in the present set of circumstances.
