Getting my vaccine shot

Posted 1 Month ago by Castrael

I'm getting my vaccine next Saturday and I'm slightly anxious about it. I took the last spot of available appointments apparently too. Go figure.

Cas, I KNOW you are not elderly. Are you a front line or health care worker?

I work in a grocery store . There weren't enough vaccines to hand out though and only two stores of my company in the whole area were only taking appointments.

I plan to get mine when I can. How was the experience?

I was fine until a couple of hours later when my arm started hurting. That was painful. I hear the second shot is worst so I'm not looking forward to it. My second appointment is next Saturday and I took Sunday off to be prepared for the worst. >.< lol

Congrats! The vaccine rollout has been a complete mess in, well, pretty much everywhere. Still probably going to be a month or two before I'm maybe going to become eligible for the first shot, which is a bit of a bummer. My sister works in the school system here and has already gotten her first shot, which is good.

It's been pretty wild to see, though, how many people I know managed to get the vaccine because they were in the right place at the right time. Spots that had an excess of doses but didn't have enough appointments to use them all, so they expanded their pool to avoid waste. Dunno how they managed it.

My spouseketeer is a teacher (and immunofrigginconpromised) and she'll be getting her first dose Monday, 2nd in a month. I can't wait. I've been terrified she'll get the rona and then her Lupis will kick back in and send her staright to kidney failure again.

Massachusetts is so dumb. My dad, who has cancer and got the first shot because he's especially immunocompromised, was qualified in this current "phase." But my mom, who is literally the person taking care of my dad and lives with him, is not qualified in this phase. So my dad can get the shot now, but my mom cannot. Even though my mom lives with and cares for someone immunocompromised. It's such a dumb system we got.

I got my second vaccine shot 2 weekends ago, and did get side effects. ARm wasn't as sore as the first time, but I had chills for 2 days, and a mild headache for one day.

Side effects vary from person to person. Usually you get side effects on the 2nd dose/booster (pfizer/moderna), but I know people who have gotten side effects on their first shot outside of the sore arm.

I have read in an AARP comment that older people’s reaction to the first shot were likelier to be worse than younger people’s, but older people’s reaction to the second shot were likelier to be not as bad as younger people’s.
I don’t know how careful AARP were to reliably source their data.

You ever think about how funny it is that we call that stuff "side effects" when really it just means that it's working as it's supposed to work and what you're feeling is your body creating antibodies and whatnot?

I never did, no. I never thought those effects were meant by “side effects”.

I mean generally speaking. So many people refer to those things as "side effects," and we see that language in like, news and media stories, too.

My uncle actually got a fever after the first shot. My parents were fine though. It really depends on the person. My side effects on teh 2nd one were relatively mild (chills for 2 days) while I know some people who have gotten bad fevers for 2 days.

At least for the second shot, yes side effects does indicate its working. First shot basically primes your immune system for a reaction for the second shot. But you could also not have any side effects at all in the last shot, though its rare.
