Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity has a new eShop demo available for download, which gives players a taste of the upcoming hack-and-slash game. While much of the demo has you fighting through droves of Bokoblins, the opening of the demo teases some tantalizing possibilities for the entirety of the game.
In the initial cutscene, Age of Calamity starts up in the future, when Zelda stops Ganon from continuing his rampage on Hyrule. This is notable because technically, Age of Calamity is supposed to be a prequel.
But when Zelda’s power awakens during the cinematic, we see a mini guardian turn on and then suddenly hop into a portal. The portal takes the tyke to the past, where the events of Age of Calamity take place. Time travel is nothing new for the Zelda franchise — in Majora’s Mask, it’s a mechanic unto itself. But the reason this is a curious decision for Age of Calamity is that it means we can’t assume what will happen during the course of the game
This entire time, fans have thought the prequel would inevitably end in tragedy. After all, in Breath of the Wild, the champions are long-dead. In Age of Calamity, the champions are all alive and gearing up to defend Hyrule from Ganon’s threat.
If time travel is on the table, the developers at Koei Tecmo don’t have to follow the events that lead into Breath of the Wild at all. They could, in fact, just open up a new timeline in which something else happens altogether. Already, by changing the myth tapestry we see at the start of Breath of the Wild, there’s speculation that Age of Calamity might introduce more champions — the original imagery only showed one champion per Divine Beast. Now there’s two! What does it mean? Will the champions win against Ganon this time? Nevermind, of course, that the mini guardian that puts everything into motion doesn’t even exist in Breath of the Wild.
What’s more, data miners who have perused through the game files have found icons belonging to a number of surprising (and spoilery) character inclusions. While these icons could mean anything and don’t necessarily imply we’ll be able to play as these figures, the combination of time travel and their apparent inclusion in the game means that anything is possible.
I am currently playing through the AoC demo and is alot of fun, but doesn't play like BotW. If you haven't played the demo yet then keep that in mind. I do like where they are going with this and could setup BotW 2 to much different than many thought.
I played it and, story-wise, I like it better than Breathe of the Wild. It makes a lot more sense for me and is much more alive than BoTW. I'm buying it when it comes out.
Well, it tells it's story much differently than how BotW did. I actually did like the demo as well and will probably get the game when it comes out. I do like that your progress in the demo will carry over to the actual game so you can pick up from where you left off.
I liked the kind of indirect jigsaw puzzle plot that Breath of the Wild had wher ye ou had to piece together a lot of the story from clues given in various ways in the game myself b ut I've really been getting i n to the Zelda timeline lately (i'm working my way thro gh the Downfall timeline right now through various methods such as fan recaps and so me of the manga adaptations and Zelda Universe's cinematic retelligns I plan to get to the other two timelines as well) ther'es absolutely a story there but toi get to it y ou have to talk to characters, explore the environment/, read in gmae books etc. I'm just curious if it will tie in to the sequals plot as well some how.
Just got off playing the demo... I've heard a lot of feedback with complaints of framerates (as well as the time travel), and motion controls, but quite frankly, it's not that bad at all. Even framerate videos seem to put it averaging in the mid 20s.
Resolution wise, this game is 810p tops in docked mode and could go as low as 540p apparently. Picture wise, it looks fine to me. Not a vaseline smear or anything. (on docked at least).
Anyway, I had no expectations coming into this, but left away impressed. The gameplay is fun, and the characters are unique from each other. I did enjoy my first mousou warriors game with Hyrule warriors back in the day on the Wii u via demo sp, and I enjoyed it also, but not enough to buy it. I do think I will buy this game, but might wait for switch pro next year for optimal performance, though I can tolerate it now.

I noticed some framerate drops but it didn't affect my experience or enjoyment. but perhaps when the actual game comes out the framerates will be fixed. The issue may also steam from the fact that this game appears to be using the BotW engine, or something very similar and BotW also has framerate drops.
I'm really digging how each characger in the Demo has a different play style, and honestly I feel like Impa and Zelda are more badass than link.
just started playing the Demo myself and loving it. The controls will take some getting used to but mowing down swaths of Bokoblins with well placed bombs feels good.
I just took a took a dump all over quality Zelda titles with crappy Warriors gameplay, here's what happened.
Joking! I'm kidding, I swear. I have no opinion on this. Don't really enjoy the Warriors mindless hack and slash gameplay, so I've not been drawn to the Hyrule Warriors games. I hope it's good for all of you who are excited about it! :)

Normally I'm not either but AoC does feel different. I'd recommend downloading the demo and trying it out. You'll complete the demo within a hour or 2 so if you don't like it you aren't out any money and not much time.
That’s a good idea. I beat all the missions on normal and played a couple on hard. As far as I can tel there isn’t a cap on leveling up your 3 available characters.
aaaand I got Link's Broadsword maxed out. Getting extra pumped to get to Chapter 2 want to see how the Champions play and what sort of loot I can get later int he game! I doubt th ey'll stick Link int he soldier armor the whole game.
Played it for an hour or so last night. Frames stuttered worse than President Elect Biden. Controls felt clunky as well. Does this game come out before or after BOTW2?
I dont think this game is for me. I rather stick with picking up a BOTW copy + DLC and a copy of BOTW2.
keeping this away from the spoiler thread I may still find the gameplay reletivley engaging but my hopes for the story have sor tof been significently lessened based on bits and peices I've heard.
I don't expect it to be a complete let down for4m a gameplay and aesthetic stand point but I'll say I have NO trust in Polygon bunch of clickbaiting hacks.
Well, I like Polygon better than I do IGN and GameSpot. Speaking of them, IGN rated the game highly while GameSpot didn't like it that much. It currently carries a average score of 79 critic score and a 8.0 user score on metacritic which is pretty good overall.
yeah journalism outlets in general do n't have al ot of trust from me. At best I just go to them for raw information and pretty much ignore their opinions because half the time they don't even do raw information right.
Yeah, I usually read or view multiple reviews and usually trust what they all say in common and ignore the opinion statements. I mainly go to them for news as they usually post it before youtubers. Some good news guys a watch are Spawn Wave, RGT85 and Dreamcast Guy as they do a pretty good job of reviewing/going news and letting you know when they are giving thier opinion.
The timeline gets complicated as some games take place in a timeline after Ocerina of time, where Ganon succeeded and others take place in a timeline where link stopped him. It all gets complicated so I recommend playing them in the order they released as features and gameplay ideas get introduced and expanded upon after each release.
pretty much what I did with Shenmue 3 gameranx proved the most useful for me int hat regard most people were complaining about the designe or aesthetics or vo ice acitng being archaic I jsut wante dot know if it would give me what I wanted or expectedout of a Shenmue game. Modernization was not a priority.
