A Guide to Japanese Role-Playing Games Launch

Posted 1 Month ago by Alan

This book A Guide to Japanese Role-Playing Games launched yesterday and includes our 1.4 demo of Shrine's Legacy on a jump drive with the collector's edition (among other awesome indie devs' demos). It is over 600 pages long and looks very high quality! :)

Looks pretty cool. I was a little worried when I saw that the default currency was the pound, but the shipping's not too bad.

Shouldn’t the default currency be the talent?

Man, the protection on this book is more than a lot of electronics I've gotten. The book itself is wrapped in plastic, then it has a layer of foam around it, then each corner has thicker foam, then there's a cardboard box, and finally a plastic sleeve/envelope. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the care put into it, but it seems kind o excessive.

A lot of people get pissed when the corners of a book get bent during shipping, and I think people appreciate the shipment method for that.

Glad to see you ordered one! @Axem

What do you think of it? I think it's really cool so far! Tons of games I've never heard of, haha!

It’s a pun on the modern meaning of the word “talent”.
That modern meaning is from the New Testament use of the word “talent” in parables.
In the New Testament a “talent” was a Roman unit of currency.
It was the value of enough copper to fill up an oxhide sack.
….
Lots of superhero or sci-fi or fantasy stories and games and comix and anime are largely about superhuman or supernatural “talents” various characters have.

I just thought it would be a good international convention that in games, comix, anime, etc. in the superhero or SF or fantasy genres, the default global currency should be the “talent”, unless the milieu has been explicitly localized.

Nobody has to take me seriously.
And I suppose it’s at most tangentially relevant to this thread.

Unfortunately, I haven't had time to actually start reading it yet. Been kind of busy lately. Hopefully I'll be able to, soon.
