We're gonna need a bigger boat.

I have to say, pleasantly surprised overall. It wasn't cynical,I didn't get the impression that the makers had contempt for the source material. Not eas there any pandering juvenile humour one often expects from these kinds of movies. I'm glad they appear to be trying to realise the actual Pokémon world I to live action rather than bring them into 'our' world.

Looks alright. I feel like they're trying to hit on the "all ages" kind of thing. Adults who grew up with Pokémon could appreciate the look and the humor that the Pikachu gives. Kids will probably be entertained by the cute nature of the characters.

Also there was an extremely small Toy Story 4 preview released today. Also was kind of silly, but I'll probably see that in a heartbeat.

Overall the nostalgia levels have been all over today. Trailer for Detective Pikachu and Toy Story 4 were cool then Stan Lee passed away which is very much uncool. How could god have taken that glorious man away?

I was skeptical.

But sign me the fuck up.

I'd like to be proven wrong but I still feel the Sonic movie trailer isn't going to prove me wrong whenever that lands. Mainly because SEGA will just give Sony licence to pull their usual CG live action movie shtick.

that...actually looked better than I would've thought. Please tell me there's a traffic jam somewhere being caused by a sleepy Snorlax.

that said, where's my DeVitochu

Same. I would've preferred it I think, just because it would be hilarious. It would've also unloaded a stash of memes.

It's way too early to call it but if Pokémon were the franchise to break the video game movie curse it would be great. So many other game franchises try harder and harder to present their stories like Hollywood films and still never succeed in adaptions. Pokémon has never really wanted to be that and yet here we are.

Posted November 13th, 2018 by Gigashadow

^ EXACTLY. Tomorrowland pulled this shit. The modern day nihilist urban romp is NOT what Pokemon is all about. Hollywood loves taking beloved franchises that were gloriously creative and optimistic and find new ways to turn it generic, under the guise of "modernization." I can already tell this is gonna flop critically.

you seem upset by the idea that a movie based on Detective Pikachu is similar to Detective Pikachu

Posted November 16th, 2018 by Pirate_Ninja

have any of you considered that this looks, uh, dumb

I'll keep that one in my back pocket.

Yeah maybe to people not into it.

WB will have a lot of lay-offs after this movie bombs and their plunged into debt.

Looks dumb

that can be said about every thing

Posted November 16th, 2018 by S.o.h.

If there's any good that can come from a movie called Detective Pikachu, it's not going to be a melodramatic story set in the "real world."

Posted November 17th, 2018 by mariomguy

This is gonna flop so bad. The movie might do well in Asia if they put justice in the background on the movie poster like they did to Finn on the force awakens. But movies generally don’t do well in Asia with black leads. The only exception to the rule is will Smith

Directed by the guy who made Shark Tale, Monsters Vs. Aliens, Gulliver's Travels, and Goosebumps.

Rob Letterman. B-list, more like C-list director. Was there ever a good Pokemon movie? Like, ever? Geez. Whoever's in charge of doing these things needs to realize a good story trumps everything else.

What are you guys talking about? This looks like garbage.

When did anyone ever say they wanted Pikachu to have a wise-cracking Ryan Reynolds voice?

Posted December 24th, 2018 by Agis

Don't get me wrong it will probably be bad. But I didn't get this far in life without indulging in the things that are bad for me.

Hahaha! I mean, sure, but it could be better. I think the difference between a good movie and a bad movie is just a few more weeks on the script. Spend some time, get a good story that means something to someone, stay true to your characters, and surely you can't go horrifically wrong no matter how terrible everything else ends up going.

Today, I watched two similar movies back-to-back: Shrek, and Beauty and The Beast. These are interesting to see one after the other. We all remember Shrek for being the gross-tacular antithesis to Disney, but the tightness of structure and honest portrayal of their characters are surprisingly identical. Shrek made changes for sure, but those cores were still the same.

Where Detective Pikachu goes wrong is changing the world, the core of Pokemon, when it didn't have to. And this change was not handled properly: the new world does not appear supportive of the main characters. The positive atmosphere and innocence has been completely stripped away, and the sparse friendships that do appear are coarse and not in good spirit. The movie takes all the easy tropes modern Hollywood has been leaning on for ages and executes them all poorly, without good reason.

What people wanted to see was a blunt Danny Devito Pikachu overlaid with the supportive world and characters we loved. That's not what we got.

My dude you complained about guardians of the galaxy while this may be bad ill reserve full judgement until I see it.

S o.h.

I just saw this trailer for the first time today and whaaaat the fuuuuuuck .

I get it, pokemon fans are in their 20s and 30s now so playing to the "darker and grittier" thing is going to sell the same way the dark knight and MCU did. On the other hand, this is *pokemon* we're talking about here -- for god's sake at least keep the parts of pokemon that made it interesting. It would be like creating a live-action zelda movie about political intrigue or a live-action mario movie about brooklyn plumbers falling into an alternate dimension of dinosaurs.

A better idea is something like keeping the original settings and themes and just making them darker and more realistic -- imo this is what nolan's batman movies did and they turned out very well. You still have classic batman stories and themes in there, it still feels like batman.

Sky's the limit

Pokemon Company should take pokemon and bring it to Persona 3/4/5 levels of dark. I can't handle another generation that holds your hand and has 10 trillion boring mandatory npc encounters in the first hour.

long live the king

I do think there's a valuable "older pokemon fan" niche to fill.

Sky's the limit

Older pokemon fans will want to get their kids into pokemon so unfortunately they're likely to keep buying the watered down bullshit games in pairs.

Darker grittier mcu

we watching the same movies? Outside of infiniry war nothing has really been dark and gritty

And we now know things are going to go back to normal with the next movie.

Being dark and gritty also didn't work for the DCCU.

I just want a Pokemon game with a decent story. It doesnt have to be dark and gritty.
