I will be purchasing my new laptop in a month/ month in a half from now. And I will like to purchase some games for it.

I would like to buy games released in the last decade. I do not mind double dipping. I would take what ever recommendations you can provide.

So far:

Company of Heroes 2
Resident Evil 4 (dont judge me)
Tomb Raider (1-3)
Dead Space (1-2)
MGSV
GTAV
Mass Effect (1-3)

When it comes to STEAM. How often do things go on sale? some of these games are full retail price and I cant justify spending more than 20 dollars on a 2+ year old game. I may not end up purchasing all of these due to time constraints but if something really catches my eye (and if it's not something Ive played it) I will do my best to pick it up.

  • Unreal Tournament - Through Epic Games Launcher, Free. Classic arena shooter with modern graphics and a mix of refined and retro design sensibilities.
  • Planet Coaster - Will cost a little less than full retail, but it's an original IP by the same people who made RCT3. Requires a little more heft to your graphics card.
  • Undertale - Really fun and funny retro-styled RPG. Can be beaten in 5 hours, but intended to be played through 3 times in 3 very different ways. Works nicely on a laptop.
  • Dust: An Elysian Tail - Metroidvania 2D sidescroller with excellent combo controls. Meant to be played with a mouse and keyboard, but also supports gamepads.
  • Super Meat Boy - A modern/retro classic 2D platformer. Works great with a keyboard, really fun to play.

I strongly second your choices of RE4 and MGSV. The PC port of RE4 is actually decent, which I can't say for several 6th generation PC ports. I also recommend Oblivion, New Vegas, Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2 (free), Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

There's also World of Warcraft (and WoW Classic), but you don't strike me as that kind of guy.

When it comes to STEAM. How often do things go on sale?

There's always something on sale on Steam. AAA titles might go on sale every few months. Steam Summer Sale should be coming up, so now's a good time to start paying attention. There's going to be massive discounts on a lot of stuff.

I can be the Leeroy Jenkins of the party. Ive been looking at your other post and WoW does interest (classic edition specifically) as it was huge growing up (never got the chance to play) but I dont think I have the time to invest in something like that.

I strongly second your choices of RE4 and MGSV.

MGSV is one of the games I think about a lot. Specifically its gameplay. Next to BOTW, it is one of the greatest open world games of all time. I believe the PS3 version of RE4 is a direct port of the PC version which Ive played. It looks great on the ps3 so I am happy that it will be the same case with the PC version.

Team Fortress 2 (free), Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

Nice to see TF2 is free! CS:GO I ve never played but Ive seen videos the skill level of some players is down right impressive.

I will keep a look out on sales. I made a new steam account today. (which is probrably linked to my old one)

two games I really do want to check out are:

    Alan Wake and Quantum Break.

There are also several other microsoft exclusives that I want to check out: cuphead, recore.

What are the specs you're working with?

Posted May 16th by Orion Nebula

    For right now:

Hardware Specifications Of Acer Aspire E 15
Processor (8th Gen) Intel Core i5-8250U Processor – Turbo up to 3.4 GHz
    RAM 8GB RAM
    Hard Disk 256GB SSD
    Graphics NVIDIA GeForce MX150 2GB
    Operating System Windows 10
Display 15.6 Inch Full HD ComfyView widescreen LED-backlit IPS Display With 1920 x 1080 Resolution
    Weight 5.27 Pounds
    Battery Life Upto 15 Hours

As long as I cna play most games at medium setting with 40+ frames Im fine with that.

Granted I mighit need to beef up the memory.

I think with that graphics card you're probably looking at things from the earlier parts of the last decade rather than more recent stuff. Looks like it can handle some recent games on low settings & 720p rather than full 1080 though.

If you can afford to you should maybe look at something a little beefier. Even just bumping up to a laptop with a GTX1050 would help you reach medium settings at 1080 more consistently. You could also try looking out for something with one of the new GTX 1650 cards in as they are still "entry level" but offer better performance than 1050s, though that might bump the price up more than you want as they're fairly new and there may be better deals on laptops with a 1050 in with it being older.

Would definitely suggest bumping up to a 1050 at least though if you want to meet your medium settings 40+ FPS spec.

Your RAM is fine. I use 8 GB and I get by just fine. That GPU is the bottleneck in this case.

How firm are you on this model? What's your price range?

    Posted May 16th by Cruinn-Annuin

$650 is my price. If there is something better at than this I wouldnt mind picking something else up. My biggest criteria is battery life and portability second.

I am sacrificing the latter with this model though. (which I am willing to do)

It was recommended that I have one for the Peace Corps as a lot of volunteers share physical media/ physical media will be easier to come by than wifi at times. So possibly. I know for a fact that I will need an ethernet port.

OK, well honestly that laptop looks really nice for the price. Alot of laptop manufacturers are starting to drop the optical drive to cut costs and have lower prices. You aren't going to be doing any high-definition gaming with it but for most of the games I have seen listed you should be fine.

Amazon has the laptop for $550 right now, so if you act fast you could save $100.

I was going to recommend you an MSI laptop in your price range, but I've just looked over the reviews and almost everyone is having problems with them nowadays. Oh, well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Mine works fine, but who knows what the fuck they've done recently...

    Posted May 16th by Cruinn-Annuin

I remembered working with your budget to come up with a laptop that works under the price constraints. The dedicated graphics card is very weak, but you can game on it. Low settings for most games, medium settings for very old games, less than 1080p, less than 60f. 8 GB RAM is very good for system multitasking, but lack of dedicated VRAM means it will struggle with a lot of newer games. When you do game, make sure everything else is closed and it might help to turn textures down.

A good midrange graphics card costs half what you're paying for the entire laptop, so keep that in mind. Everything should be medium or low settings. Try docking the resolution down to 1600 x 900: this renders 30% less pixels than full 1080 HD and should bump your framerates up from 30 to 40, or 45 to 60.

    It's a console, not a gaming laptop.

    Posted May 17th by mariomguy

Cool gaming won't be the primary purpose of the machine. Shoot it won't even be its secondary purpose.

ive explaines this to you multiple times (psyduck)

I also come from a time where I played my favorite MMOFPS with minimum settings at 20-28fps trust me not playing at yhe highest settings is not an issue for moi.

Yeah, you can play NetHack on a reasonably powerful wristwatch nowadays.

A good midrange graphics card costs less than a third of what he's paying.

    A GTX 1660 costs $220. GTX 1660 CV costs $280. RTX 2060 costs $350 - $370. SOH's laptop costs $550.

GTX 1050 is not midrange anymore, it's low-end.

That's just it, Null, there are sooooo many backlogged pc games that are dirt cheap or free. And modern games are usually scummy, pay to win, lootbox-ridden shit stains with nice visuals anyway. Definitely not worthy of investing extra money into specs to play them. Even though you and I may not agree on which game is the best game we can definitely agree on the objective fact that even a windows 98 potato can play a fuck tonne of amazing games.

    Sugarcoating.

A lot of people loved RCT, and hated RCT 3. But I played both, and I love RCT 3 more. The old games were limited to an isometric view: no ability to tilt the camera, and only 4-corner rotate. You had every ability to create a rollercoaster but no ability to ride it. RCT 3 was a great game, but because the models were not that great due to the limitations of 3D and graphics cards in those days... no, it's not perfect. And yeah, it required a really good GPU just to run that. But once you got it running, man, it was a dream.

This happens with a LOT of games. The original is new and exciting. Then the update comes along and it changes things. We hate change, but the change is better. And a few more iterations of changing things, people miss the first one. But go back and play the first one and it's practically unplayable, or a much more restricted experience and unrefined experience than you expected. Modern games are made with modern standards, very few retro games have modern sensibilities. Ironically, RCT is one of the most modern of the bunch, but even that has to compete with Planet Coaster now.

    Posted May 17th by mariomguy

Mariom, if new games are scummy when it comes to business practice then it doesn't even matter if they're innovative.

The game I was actually getting at though originally, is Pokemon Showdown. You can play any generation of competitive pokemon online totally for free, build your teams exactly how you want them, and try to get to the top of the ladder.

Excuse you, but NetHack is so fucking deep that your candy ass would not even know where to start with criticizing it (not for lack of trying, I'm sure). NetHack is black metal, but you've only listened to Taylor Swift.

178 dollars really isn't that much to spend on a GPU when you put things in perspective. The 1080 TI's were going for over 1000 USD when the cryptocurrency craze was going on.

The GTX 1050 certainly isn't the absolute lowest tier graphics card you can buy, but it's definitely in the 1-50 spectrum rather than the 51-100 spectrum. Meaning, as Mguy says, it is in the lower end. Like I have a 1060 in my desktop and there are some things I'd like it to be able to do that it can't. But shit, it plays A Hat in Time in 4K and that's super dope.

  • cost $178
  • gets MINIMAL 120 FPS at 1080p

gets MINIMAL 120 FPS at 1080p

    It doesn't though.

Lets look at it's performance in Fallout 4 which came out 4 years ago.

Average FPS at 1080p: 43 FPS

    fuckin' delusional degens

Like if you're gonna resort to ad hominems Null, at least be right. You're not even marginally close to being right. My 1060 doesn't get 120 FPS at 1080p. 1070 doesn't either.

Lets look at some other games to show that you're bullshitting and know absolutely nothing about the card you just bought:

Tomb Raider 2013: Average FPS at 1080p: 44.3 FPS

Grand Theft Auto V: Average FPS at 1080p: 44.3 FPS

Battlefield 1: Average FPS at 1080p: 46 FPS

Overwatch: Average FPS at 1080p: 74 FPS

Witcher 3: Average FPS at 1080p: 39 FPS

    Hell lets go back further:

Hey look you got one, it'll do 120 fps in CSGO which came out in 2012, congratulations.
DOTA (another really old game) 106 FPS
You get lots of FPS in League of Legends, even more than 120

You don't need to be a pretentious fuck bag at every topic, Null. I suggest you stick to the ones you actually know something about.

I dunno if you have the regular older 1050 or the TI (which is better), but I used the TI to look this up and give you the benefit of the doubt. If you have the regular 1050 then these games will run even worse.

It depends on what kind of games you like to play. The 1050 is unfortunate in that it's optimized for newer processes, but not powerful enough to handle the latest games at full HD. You always have to dock resolution and quality for decent performance. If you're a budget gamer right now, do everything you can to afford a 1660 or at least a 1650. Otherwise, stick to AMD and avoid all of NVIDIA's previous line as much as possible. And get ready to upgrade to raytracing: it will become standard on all games within the next few years.

Planet Coaster recommends a GTX 980, 12 GB RAM, and 4 GB VRAM! The game scope is insane and looks incredible (you're literally running a fully-fledged 3D amusement park with all those people and coasters), but to play it like that you need a machine that's capable. That's just the way it is.

BTW, S.O.H, I'm redacting my Planet Coaster recommendation. Your laptop can't run it. A 1050 will barely run it. You'd need a $300 card to do that game justice.

    Posted May 18th by mariomguy

Here's the way I see it: instead of spending $300-$500 on a new console every generation, plop down on a gaming PC and upgrade only the components you need over time. If I want to enter the next generation, I can do so at my own pace, at the level that I want. A single $250 upgrade is enough to send me into the next generation. Other components can last a lot longer.

Don't buy from G2A. Sellers on there are frequently selling keys bought with stolen payment details which can result in your game being removed from your account without a refund. Some services even close your account down as a result of this.

cdkeys.com are a safer bet as all of their keys are legit and you're buying directly from them as opposed to a random seller.

  • Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy

There's Warframe if you want a good time sink, and also Diablo 3 if you're into the level grind. Would also recommend Guild Wars 2 for MMOs (Path of Fire/Heart of Thorns expansions are more action tbh).

As for recommendations, Monster Hunter World is easily one of my favorite games from the last two years. I was skeptical of it at first, because I tried one of the Wii U Monster Hunter games and found it terribly clunky. But MH World is a really great game with a lot of content, and the devs are still releasing free updates with a new DLC coming out in December.

I'm not sure how well it will run on a mobile GPU though.

I dont want to sound like a High school freshman on prom night but.... I didnt realize just how big a 15.6 inch....laptop is. needless to say I will have to be purchasing a new messenger bag.

I installed resident evil 4 and played it for a bit. It looks great but mouse controls feels weird for me. I have to play with the mouse control settings a little bit later on. I am going to do my best to declutter the bloatware from this device at the moment I have 197GB of free space. (This will prob drop down to 100 after installing some games)

Realistically for my personal items I need no more than 10gb and I have an extra SD card too boot. But I will be purchasing an external SSD or HDD later on.

I downloaded RE4 and have Alan Wake and Company of Heroes 2 waiting to download.

I do plan to buy a gaming control later on.... any recommendations? I can just buy an xbox one controller and use that correct?

You can buy 256 GB flash drives for $40! If you need more space I suggest sticking with SSD. Physical HDDs with tons of space are very alluring, but more prone to failure. If you're crazy, get an m.2 SSD card and a USB C enclosure for blazing fast, really small and affordable memory. Whole setup can cost like $80 for 500 GB!

At launch I know the game had issues with the mouse. I'd hope that's been patched by now but I never went back to check. A controller might be your best bet for a port like RE4.

I am going to do my best to declutter the bloatware from this device at the moment I have 197GB of free space.

You can try to declutter it by uninstalling stuff, but sometimes the built-in junk doesn't want to leave gracefully. I'd say wipe it and do a clean Windows 10 install from a usb stick if you're up for it.

At launch I know the game had issues with the mouse. I'd hope that's been patched by now but I never went back to check. A controller might be your best bet for a port like RE4.

For what it's worth, I didn't have to fuck with the mouse settings at all for the PC port. Maybe I'm just lucky.

I do plan to buy a gaming control later on.... any recommendations? I can just buy an xbox one controller and use that correct?

I bought a wired 360 controller several years ago and it remains perfect for everything.

Thank you guys for the recommendations.

I reached the second save point in RE4 and think it is best to save there before continuing on. (with a controller of course!)

ninja edit I went ahead and purchased the wired controller It should arrive sunday. for now I am itching to play COH 2. I am going to try and see if I can play off my tv.

I am happy with my purchase. It is a little big... but it feels sturdy as hell.

Update my old laptop seems to be on her final days. Time to transfer everything over.
