What I've read/heard: It's a dumbed down Terraria.

Is that true?

Your opinion is invalid if you don't own both titles.

I have Terraria but wondering if Star bound is worth the go.

"Dumbed down Terraria" is accurate but doesn't entirely do it justice.

It's still early access, so things are still likely to change but:

It's mostly like Terraria was when Terraria first released (for those that remember the good old 1.0 days). You've got a basic gear grind, a few bosses and VERY VERY generic mobs. Terraria had more interesting mobs at launch than this game currently does.

The whole galaxy, travelling between planets, feels like a gimmick at the moment. Aside from different ores being on different world types there's not really much of interest in other worlds and it konda gets a bit old after a while...

Exploration is practically non existent, which is something you'd want if you've got thousands of planets to visit... Like there's Avian tombs, Apex labs, etc, but they never have anything in them that's worth the effort to clear them out. All I ever do at them is take the cosmetics.

There's definitely more potential in the base building aspect but where Terraria has a purpose for this (to house NPCs), there's currently no incentive beyond being creative in Starbound.

There's loads more but I'll just sum it up:

It's a game that has a lot of potential, and you can see that potential in the current version. It's still in early access so by the time it is officially released it might have reached that potential... But currently it is not a game I would recommend if you already have Terraria because it will end up feeling like a lesser version.

Also progression is handled via quests, whereas Terraria's progression feels much more open and less forced.

"generic mobs"

Welp that was one of the major selling points of this thing. Gonna avoid it for now and check their blog every so often.

Plus all of that other stuff you mentioned.

Argh.

I mean, don't get me wrong. They have some cool stuff implement for the mobs. Like a random creature generator... But there seems to be very few parts to this creature generator that they quickly end up looking fairly similar on every world you go to. They did get some different types of attack, but nothing too interesting yet.

As I said, lots of potential. Hopefully by release version it has reached that potential.

I know the generator needs needs more parts, and now that space travel feels like a gimmick.

So I won't be investing in it until their original goal has been fleshed out.

I imagine it won't be too long; read a few of the blog posts and it seems yo he taking shape nicely.

I've only recently taken interest to Starbound. Curious as to how long its been in early access.

I do remember people hyping it up quite a bit though. :X

Two years, maybe a little more? For much of 2014 there was no stable release update, it was all just unstable releases that you had to opt into. So earlier on 2015 we had the first stable release in a year and it dramatically changed the game. I think if they can get exploration to be meaningful then space travel will have more significance.

I do believe they'll get there eventually so it's worth keeping an eye on it.
