I'm thinking the base need of a group (as opposed to an individual) is probably

1. How do they define and maintain the difference between in-group members and out-group people?

Because until that's answered no "group" really exists.

But of course, if there are no members, the group doesn't really "exist" either, so, once (1) is settled, I think the needs of the members are the basic needs of the group.

2. How does the group feed its members? (What do they eat? what do they drink? Do they hunt or fish or gather? do they farm or herd? and so on.)

3.* How does the group recruit new members? (Usually "reproduction"; what are the details? But sometimes also nonmembers can marry in, or be adopted in, or be captured in, or otherwise join up.)

4. How does the group defend itself and its territory? (Some groups may not have a very strong idea of territory. For instance, a nomadic herding group, for whose range no other groups are competing, may not care as much about the actual spot of land as about the animals on it, especially if they don't happen to be there themselves at the time.)

5. What does the group teach its members?

Anyone have any better ideas? Any additions or corrections? Any tweaking or re-ordering or re-wording to recommend?

*What if member(?) A thinks A is a member but member B thinks A is not a member?
What if member B thinks member(?) A is a member, but A thinks A is not a member?

How about retaining its members (i.e. making them want to stay)? Also, I would extend "teach" to "change". This incorporates things like giving them identification marks, or improving/modifying them in some way (see: Borg).

Maybe so.
I'm ready to address 1 and 3 for Adpihi (one of my concultures); when I get time I'll post it on-line and put the link here (or maybe just copy the post here, depending on its length). I'm not ready to address the others yet.
How about anyone else? How about you, simon?
