So who works out the histories of the kingdoms? Myself, I try to have lineages and succeeding kings and the wars that they endured and died in. I find that when I do that, the stories naturally follow.

History is one part of my conworld that I've been trying to avoid, because it's such a massive task. Of course I've outlined some historic events, but not many. Writing history for conworlds is a task that disheartens me, although I like history...

I've also been stalling on history. I'm not sure if I have the time right now to go through four thousand years of interdimensional travel!

I have a timeline for my world pretty much nailed down, if "nailed down" is defined as "I know the basic chronological order of major events, but I don't have any dates for them, and parts of it are really sketchy". Meh. It works for me.

I have a reasonable amount of history. But I don't tend to think of it as a succession of rulers, because frankly the most interesting times are when things go wrong, which aren't confined to succession.

My latest history is of a continent that has a centralized government that changes hands on average several times a year. But it's overall rather stable. The instabilities were more in the past, when there wasn't a centralized government.

What about wars, catastophes and political crises? (Including the odd heroic quest.)

Well, I expect to; or, at least, I plan to. But I haven't yet.

I love writing history. It's one of my favorite things to do in my conworld. I have a timeline worked out. It is very basic at some points, only outlining major events. It gets more detailed closer to the present. I find that doing this presents me with very good story ideas.

Hallo!

I also love writing history. It is fun and rewarding and spawns hooks for stories en masse. My timeline of the history of the British Elves is already fairly detailed in places, but there is still some work to do on it.

I'm going to write various stories about my world at different periods and in different cultures, so I need at least a base history of the places.

(I'm trying to find general cause-and-effect of major advancements to use to create my timelines so they'll be semi-consistent. Help?)

Not usually in much detail. I know the basic shape of what's befallen Valta, and to a lesser extent, the Drellen over the last thousand years. Near past is defined pretty well, especially the reestablishment of the Empire.

I hope to go into more detail for my alternate project, which will be called Ragnarok Now until I think of something better. I'd like to be able to draw on a long history to add depth. One of my favorite things about Lord of the Rings is the sense of the past, and the feeling that the world goes on and doesn't just begin or end with the story.

I think I will include fewer songs, though.
