I like shorts! They're comfy and easy to wear!

Wary of strong language? Hah! You better have BURN HEAL!

my brother bought UM and I've been slo-mo replaying Fire Red...so I got the itch and decided to give Ultra Sun a whirl. I'm on my way to the second trial on the second island, so there's plenty I haven't gotten to yet. It's been the same game, though the encounter variety keeps it relatively fresh and there are changes here and there that I've appreciated - like the new mode of transport.

you now have the option of playing a minigame to travel between islands, in which you surf on a Mantine's back and pull off Sweet Tricks to shoot for a high score. It's moderately fun on its own (though it's obviously slower than just hopping a ferry or flying), but the real attraction is that you gain BP at a pretty reasonable rate. Which can be used at beach stalls to buy stuff and pay new move tutors. Fire Punch at the start of island two instead of needing to breed for it? Hell yes, please.

Got Ultra Moon but have barely played it yet!

I wasn't sure if I was going to at first but decided it's the final game on 3DS so why not.

I’m plodding through this game I guess. Started with Litten. Looking forward to evolving my Rockruff.

well, they've at least been good enough to finally embrace some long-awaited changes. Dragging HM slaves around is a thing of the past, and they finally streamlined the PC to get rid of the withdraw/deposit nonsense. Those, along with Poké Pelago's instant access to berry farming, are much appreciated.

can I nominate "no more unskippable cutscenes please" for next-gen improvements? It's especially painful in a game that's designed to be replayable.

    ah ok

I'm just used to the idea of it being late in the 3DS life cycle where anyime Nintendo mentions the damn thing idiots start frothing at the mouth about supporting the Switch. And I honestly can't think of many more titles that are supposed to be ahead, so I just felt compelled to support a really good one that hopefully will get the attention it deserves.

HMs were essentially eliminated in the previous title, yeah? One of the best things about that game, as I recall.

Anyway, I plan to pick this up at some point--I haven't skipped a main series game yet (though I kinda wished I had skipped D/P). Currently in the process of Nuzlocking SoulSilver, but I imagine I'll get to the new game once that's done. I second what P_N said about cutscenes, though--it's one of the main reasons I haven't replayed the original Moon. Especially since they were so frontloaded in that game, they really made the early game a slog, and I'm not encouraged to hear of more of the same in US/UM...

Yeah, I actually skipped Diamond and Pearl and went straight to Black and White to start my Pokémon journey again in 2014 I believe it was? I haven’t played Sun and Moon. Lol

Yeah, agree that the cutscenes are terribly long. But, I think Pokémon Skull is way worst.

yeah, I was referring to gen 7 in general because of what Dre said

they've mostly been the same as they were...though I'm p sure they shortened the buildup to getting your starter.

Yea there was a whole ceremony around getting your starter but now it's kinda just like on your way up there you get it so they definitely cut something out there.

They have streamlined some of the story to cut out tiny bits of the annoying waiting to get anywhere, but it's mostly the same and I guess countered by the additions of new story content.

Is Ultra Sun/Moon iterative on the base game in a similar way Black/White 2 was? I was really into Black 2 when I played it, and that's in part because I'm a sucker for returning to a world and seeing how things have changed. One of my absolute favorite gaming moments when I was a kid was realizing I'd made my way back into Kanto in Silver.

Part of why Gold/Silver stands out in my mind as the pinnacle of the series.

doesn't appear to be. Seems more like a retelling of the same story with different Pokémon/item locations and some new plot points and stuff added in - though I can't say yet how much.

like, it's still you moving to Alola and "befriending" Hau, helping Lillie and Escape Artist Nebby, going on your island challenge as Professor Kukui decides "Alola should have a Pokémon League too...fuck it, I'ma build one." Meanwhile, Team Skull Featuring Gladion is being a public nuisance while the lovely Ms. Lusamine does purely benevolent things with her Aether Foundation.

but now, there are some mysterious folks working alongside Lusamine to achieve some cryptic goal, and I've heard musings about activity from the dreaded Pokémon mafia (and they do literally call them the mafia). Who's doing what and what exactly it'll mean for me, I don't know yet.

That sounds a bit disappointing. Is it different from S/M in a similar vein to Crystal/Emerald/Platinum being different from their respective games, or is it even less so? Does it feel like a different game at all?

My impression from what little I have played so far + the stuff seen in trailers is that it's probably done a little bit more than what those 3 games did (haven't played emerald but I assume it's on par with the other two). But generally that's exactly what the Ultra games are, they're the 3rd more refined game of the generation.

PN is further than me so he probably has a better grasp though.

Does it feel like a different game at all?

Speaking for my experiences on the first Island it feels "different" but not in a huge way. They've moved where some encounters occur & changed some of the pokemon they use, added a new beach (that I assume is where you can surf between the islands from) changed some dialogues, adjusted some cutscenes, added some stickers, etc. Lots of tiny changes.

It probably also helps that I am playing the opposite version for ultra so I'm also encountering different wild pokemon to what I would have.

Same here. I think it was alright but ultimately I don't care for it much myself.

My first go around I picked up Moon. So this time it's Ultra Sun. I have also heard some exciting things about Hau, but I won't spoil them here. I am very excited to get to the end.
