We're gonna need a bigger boat.

I enjoyed the first episode. I dont think the punisher warrants a 13 episode season but we will see how it goes. Everything on the marvel side of things since Civil war has been pretty weak imo. Hoping this is a change.

I finished episode 2 earlier. So far it's holding up real good. On par with Daredevil season 1 so far.

I'm through four episodes right now. So far, the show hasn't really gripped me to the point where I'm excited about it yet, but it's been fine. Episode 3, with the flashbacks, was a great one, but it's really the only one I'd say that reaches that level. I'm finding the show to have a few too many storylines that aren't connected at all yet, and most of them aren't interesting enough on their own to keep me engaged (similar to the corporate stuff from Iron Fist). But Bernthal's performance continues to be great and I'm enjoying his old war buddies as well, and Micro has been a much-needed outlet for comedy in an otherwise pretty bleak story so far.

Not gonna lie: I can't bring myself to watch it. Partly because I've found the last few Marvel Netflix shows to be boring slogs (I still can't get beyond the first episode of the Defenders), partly because - as a character - I don't really find Punisher that appealing as a solo title. (I say this, but Matt Fraction's run on Punisher War Journal was pretty awesome back in the day.)

That's fair, Jet. I do think Defenders got better after the first two (REALLY SLOW) episodes, though only for four or so episodes before it went off the rails. And I was pretty sure I'd like the Punisher a lot better as a contrast to Daredevil than as a standalone as well, and so far this series is bearing that out...though it's still decent. So far I like it quite a bit better than Defenders and Iron Fist

Watched Episode 5 today and quite enjoyed it. It and 3 are my favorites thus far.

I think its one of the best marvel shows to date. I like it better than DD or JJ. I wrapped up episode 9 Probrably will finish the series by thanksgiving.

Interesting. Obviously I'm not as far along as you are, but I wouldn't even put it on the same level as JJ and DD S1 (which I think are really, really good seasons of TV). So far I would say I enjoyed the first half of Luke Cage better than this, albeit not by a huge margin.

As I said in one of the previous discussion threads, I never really liked this character in DD Season 2 so I never went into this expecting it to be one of my favourites. Two episodes in and I'm kinda like "eh, it's ok". Not great, but not bad either.

Problem is I've got other shows that I am really enjoying, so I'm struggling to find the motivation to go back to Punisher right now. I will eventually when everything else goes on winter break I guess.

it's better than iron first, the defenders and the second half of luke cage. jon bernthal is great.

these shows have too many episodes per season, and without something that really shines (like kingpin in daredevil s1 or the addition of the punisher in s2 or even luke cage in jessica jones), they start to drag a little over halfway through. they need to trim down the fat. cut nuke out of jessica jones because he was completely unnecessary. cut diamondback from luke cage. save this season's side plot for later and expand it into a better full story next season.

also, wtf? the plots on these shows are getting way too similar. the punisher in mexico probably would have been more interesting instead of rehashing "vigilante fights bad guys from his past in NYC while outsmarting the plucky detective." the formula's getting stale

it's just disappointing after how promising daredevil and jessica jones were.

i still enjoyed a lot of this and i want to talk about the politics of it but i'll save that for when i remember how to do spoiler tags

Our opinions on this matter are almost exactly the same, poptart. It's nice that so far, they seem to have returned to giving us good TV (though there's a possibility for a second-half collapse, as has been these shows' tendency recently), but it's definitely feeling a bit bloated in the same way those other shows you mentioned were bloated. Good point on the whole "fighting-enemies-from-the-past" thing--while it worked well in Jessica Jones, it was irritating in Iron Fist and COMPLETELY unnecessary and actively off-putting in Luke Cage. They managed to motivate Daredevil believably to don the crime-fighting uniform--why can't they do so with these other heroes? I thought when this season opened that they'd explore something different (given that he seemingly dealt with his past in Daredevil), but that didn't last long.

I don't think the meddling detective has been done quite as much to death, since it's really only been a major plot point in this show and Luke Cage (and I guess Defenders?)...but I have noticed that Madani so far seems remarkably similar to Misty Knight, only with less-defined motivation and (IMO) worse acting. I'm only five episodes in, but unless something truly separates her from Knight, I'm afraid I don't see the point to her character.

Is Claire Temple going to be in this show? She's been in every one so far, but this one would feel like the biggest stretch to me. I'm glad they brought in Karen Page, though, as her interactions with Castle have brought out the best in both characters IMO. I was pretty happy to see her turn up after my reaction to the cops and the non-Curtis members of the support group was lukewarm at best.

I have some bad news for everyone regarding the source material on these superhero shows/movies...

I can't bring myself to watch it. I felt like DD s2 focused too much on his character. Like, his entire backstory was resolved in DD s2 instead of focusing on the titular character. Also, I just don't care for the character

So I wound up watching the first episode, and I was a bit surprised. It wasn't that bad! I think the bulk of it is that I really like Jon Bernthal. I'll watch the next episode later.

Im finishing up the last episode tonight. I do wish it was an episode or two shorter but over all great series.

Yeah Jon is pretty great. You are in for a wild ride.

Edit: final episode was violent af. Great show. Wonder what season 2 will be about.

I've got two episodes left, and I gotta say, I'm onboard. This is the best the Netflix Marvel shows have been since Jessica Jones, despite my initial skepticism. The most recent stretch of episodes, once the plotlines finally converged, have been great fun and have kept me wanting more. I'll have more to say later, but for now, on the villain:

It is funny trying to remember Punisher lore. Haven't read a Punisher comic in about ten years at this point. Like they set up Micro to appear as the villain in episode two, and I spent the bulk of the episode trying to remember who Micro actually is. (He's basically Punisher's information and weapons broker, if I remember that correctly.)

So I'm two episodes in. Definitely liking it way more than I thought I would, but also feel absolutely no urge to marathon it, which is actually really great.

Like that the guy who played John Quincy Adams in the John Adams mini-series is Micro!

I've finished the show, and I think this is the first one in a while that had a solid ending. I'd put it third on the list of these Netflix Marvel seasons, above DD S2 and LC but below the obvious two--in fact, I think you could argue that it's more tightly-plotted than JJ is (as good as that show was, it still had the obnoxious neighbors subplot as well as the pretty unnecessary Nuke one), though that one's way stronger thematically and has IMO the best protagonist of all these shows. Not sure that this show was strictly "necessary" as I think the Punisher as a character would have been fine with what we saw in Daredevil, but it was definitely worth the time to watch.

On Lewis:

On politics:

On the rest of the supporting cast:

Curtis was pretty great, though we unfortunately got him in very small doses. I liked how even he, the most well-adjusted of the veterans we got on this show, was shown to struggle with his demons. That was one of the most affecting and sad parts of the show for me, and the Lewis plotline was almost worth it solely because of how it got Curtis involved (though he sadly wasn't around for that plotline's conclusion).

I got this theory that Curtis and Falcon took classes together on how to lead these ptsd discussions.

Five episodes in, and I'm impressed with how they've turned Punisher into such a human character. Very different from the comics, but better for it.

The value of not definitively making up your mind *before* you see something, even if you think you have solid opinions about it! I thought the Punisher was going to be awful. I thought Thor: Ragnarok was going to be awful. I thought Justice League was going to be...well, ok, so I was right about one of them...

But yeah, it still suffers from some of the same slow beats typical of every Marvel show, but so far the pacing itself doesn't feel too bad yet. The way they worked in the villain was a tad clunky, but not bad at all. I'm also glad to be avoiding marathoning it. I'm liking it quite a bit, but I don't know how I'd feel about it if I were watching two episodes a day, or even a day apart. (I've been generally moving at one episode every few days. Mostly unintentionally, but it's been working out. I really think the breaks help it.)

Just starting episode 9. Still digging it. So far, if it keeps this up, I have to say that I think The Punisher is the best of the Marvel Netflix shows so far.

(Also, loving that Admiral Raan has a small role!)
