What can one contribute to Mathematics?
Posted: Posted November 5th, 2017 by The Fly

The great late mathematician Bill Thurston (died in 2012) wrote an insightful response to a question often asked: What's a mathematician to do? What can one contribute to mathematics?

Hope you enjoy it and let me know your thoughts.

Have fun,

If you see mathematics as art, you realize plenty can be done, and within the realm of someone who does not have a strong background in it, especially in the way of computer science, since computers can handle things that takes us a long time to solve, but we can handle tricks that computers currently cannot. As a result, there's a huge playground of ideas on how to simplify things for them.

Yes, the artistic aspect comes from the imaginative, intuitive, and heuristic ways we try to look for solutions to tough problems -- examining various patterns and thinking about how they may be related to different areas in Math or Science that have developed and matured enough to possibly have a bearing. Symmetry. Art. Near-symmetry. Structure etc ... The imagination is endless and fertile with possibilities.
