My first thought was Steven King's The Green Mile, but then i realized it wasn't a kids movie by any stretch of imagination. My second thought was "Little Foot, NO!!"

Up
Big Hero 6
The Fox and The Hound
The Secret of NiMH
The Iron Giant
Nausicaa of the Valley of The Wind - Maybe not terribly sad... or really a kid's movie, but very heartfelt and highly ambitious. If you prefer Princess Mononoke you can go for that one instead, but I always preferred Nausicaa myself.

I haven't seen Grave of the Fireflies, but that might be at the top of your list.

And for the lulz, Pokemon: The First Movie. OK, maybe not too many lulz.

Grave of the Flies is not a kids movie. The main characters are kids, but it's totally an adult movie.

So, I guess Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Taxi Driver, and The Exorcist are NOT kids movies? Pfft.

T2 is more of a teen movie. Your average child would not understand the plot of T2. Never seen taxi driver, and the exorcist is most definitely not a kids movie.
