Bored with life and addicted to Old School Runescape (scatterbrain post)
Posted: Posted October 11th by MarvaIo

- When I'm at work I wish I was at home. When I'm at home I wish I was at working making money. Today I'm sitting in my room. Sometimes I go for walks. I should get a gym membership- I'm tall and scrawny but my metabolism isn't what it used to be, if I sit all day eating brownies it WILL go to my gut.

- I don't play games anymore except Old School Runescape. I fucked with Runescape in like 2003 when I was a 9 year-old but made a new account about 2 years ago. I'm level 94 mining which is probably a couple hundred hours of gameplay by itself. The goal right now is to get 99 mining/smithing as well as quest cape and achievement diaries. My REAL WORLD goals is to save up money until February (I got $2400 in the bank right now) and move away either to Vancouver or somewhere. 24 is too old to be living with my parents in a small nowhere town.

- Been trying not to drink although I had wine at Canadian Thanksgiving a few days ago. Any tips on keeping sober? I'm thinking of buying a bottle of wine today. My vice is vodka- if I drink wine I won't be tempted to drink vodka which can fuck me up the worst.

- I think it's a really good idea to reduce the number of forums on gtx0. There are so many forums that it's daunting. The whole site feels spread too thin. For example complaints, feedback, announcements can all be one forum. I've been saying this for years and a lot of people agree with me and then there's talk about it but nothing ever happens. It feels like I'm yelling down a well.

- I feel like I'm getting dumber or maybe developing ADHD. I think I'm getting worse at spelling and typing. I find it hard to focus on one thought or idea. I'm not a smart tech guy- I'm not good with computers even though I spend most of my day on one. I know shit about taxes or cars. My dad changes my oil for me and I kind of resent my dad for not teaching me this stuff. In high school I had to learn how to shave from a fucking Youtube video.

That's it. I put things in bullet points so maybe it's easier to read. Do you have any opinion on any or all of these topics?

Loosing weight doesn't mean lifting weight. Cardio is what you want for weight loss. You lift weight to gain weight. I recommend doing alot more research before investing.

I've been wanting to run a custom server. Managed to get one started, but I wanted to run more than just an empty world. I wanted to relive my past, but there's not enough effort into recreating that. There's been some effort with Tibia, which is similar, but still not enough there, either.

27, living with my father. I want to get away, but it's hard. Hope you have more luck.

Get your mind off of it if you have problems with it. If you know it'll lead to addiction, you need to stay away from people who are not capable of respecting your desire to avoid it entirely. Those are people who are looking to you to screw yourself up so they can feel less bad about their own screwups. It's called moral relativism.

The issue is that you want more forums for more people, less forums for less people. You don't want oversaturation of an interface, but you don't want undersaturation either. A given site, teamspeak server, etc needs to match the population.

I would suggest something else is going on. I have ADHD, and of all the ADHD people i know, i've never heard of it developing later in life. It sounds to me like you've been pampered a bit too much, or you never had enough ambition. You'd rather be alone in RS classic than join a team game like Monster Hunter. You're afraid of competition, it would seem.

The content team is working on this. First, we're dealing with moderator distribution.

I was under the impression that low weight + high reps helps you with weight loss.

You don't need to go to a gym to take a walk, run, or jog. That's what convinced me otherwise.

No weight allows for higher reps, and thus is the most efficient. It's more complicated if you want to build muscle (since your cardio will often go out on you first), but that's when you should personally get someone who's been there to help you out.

Low weight/high reps does help with weight loss, but not as much as something like pure cardio. The idea that lifting automatically equals gains is silly. You have to lift big and eat big to get big.

Eat a couple lemons immediately after eating those brownies and they won't go to your gut.

29 is worse though

Any tips on keeping sober?

Loosing weight doesn't mean lifting weight. Cardio is what you want for weight loss.

Depends on your fitness level, current weight and other factors. Your body will adapt its metabolism/hunger to the amount of cardio you do.

More importantly though if you're a guy increasing the amount of physical activity you do either through cardio or especially through weight training will increase your testosterone which will then start the process of replacing fat with muscle.

Granted this is only true if you're close to your ideal weight -- if you're significantly overweight then any physical activity whatsoever is going to make you lose weight, unless you're already very active while still being significantly overweight -- that's when exercise isn't going to do shit for you and you need to focus more on increasing your metabolism.

Dude you're a programmer. Do you have a car? Tech jobs are in absurdly high demand these days. Get one and move out.

I'm thinking of buying a bottle of wine today. My vice is vodka- if I drink wine I won't be tempted to drink vodka which can fuck me up the worst.

If you're trying to not drink, get a cheap bottom-shelf vodka and vomit out your addiction potential.

Realistically, if you're close to your ideal weight, either you already know how it works, or you're probably not motivated to change. If you're very active and still overweight, either it's water or muscle weight (not much you can do), or you're not eating right, or something else is horribly wrong.

Though, there is much to be said about anorexia.

They're in high demand if you live in India. Tech field is shrinking due to outsourcing. Not to forget, i passed horses and buggies on my way to my old job (and as said in another post, moving is not an option). I played it dumb and got into tech, and now i'm paying for it. I should've focused on something more realistic like carpentry or something.

Generally the last one. If you're extremely overweight in general something is already wrong as a root problem. Leptin resistance/Insulin resistance/Metabolic syndrome are good possibilities.

When you don't have those problems and you eat more calories your metabolism will go up to compensate. It literally isn't possible to go past your maintenance weight unless your insulin levels or metabolism are fucked up. Minor cases of that and you just get a little overweight.

That's not true in any remote way. Well it is if you're doing remote work (ha pun not intended) but if you're local there's a fuckton of tech jobs out there.

moving is not an option

Is commuting not an option? Do an hour commute to the nearest big city, at least until you get the funds to move closer to it.

I'd argue, but it's anecdotal, so i'd really be arguing for the sake of arguing. People typically talk more about gaining and loosing weight than actually gaining and loosing weight.

I'd argue this myself, seeing as i've been the same weight within 20 pounds over the past 10 years. However, at the same time, i'm way overweight, from an objective standpoint. I'd honestly like more research done in this department, as well as other departments, but science and research for these types of issues that are relevant seems to be going to the wayside to try to find scientific explanations that correlate with political ideologies.

From what i'm seeing in my area, the issue is that if it can't be fixed remote, it's a hardware issue and it's cheaper to replace the hardware.

Is commuting not an option? Do an hour commute to the nearest big city, at least until you get the funds to move closer to it.

In theory i could get a 1 or 2 hour commute southbound, potentially I've heard rumors of a local system to do that, but I haven't actually seen it. I'm hoping to hear more rumors so i can actually peg someone down and actually ask them for more conformable information. Any direction other than south is unreliable. North, where all the tech jobs would be, is completely out of the question due to geography. For that reason, the local businesses, for the most part, underpay even for labor. Burger flipping, table cleaning, etc jobs are paid fairly, but those are not well paying, and factory jobs are comparable. It's for this reason that I actually considered trying police work or something of that nature. That's not panning out, though.

lol, i wish i could find a game that gives me the same feeling of discovery/adventure as i got when i first played runescape as a kid

"Any tips on keeping sober? I'm thinking of buying a bottle of wine today. My vice is vodka- if I drink wine I won't be tempted to drink vodka which can fuck me up the worst."

the wine would probably be a bad idea - your brain will just be like "man, this would be way better if i was drinking vodka."

like, if i just have one beer, the only thing i can focus on is finding and drinking more beer

" feel like I'm getting dumber or maybe developing ADHD. I think I'm getting worse at spelling and typing. I find it hard to focus on one thought or idea"

i think it's a use it or lose it sort of deal. the lazier i am, the foggier and stupider i feel. if i take some time to really focus on something, it's easier for me to focus later - does that make sense?

How much is "way overweight"?

NCBI is pretty cutting-edge. I find all kinds of cool modern research there.

@Kohlrak:

How close is your nearest city? or just large population center in general? When I lived in alabama I was waaaaay out in the country, about 15 miles away from the town, but there was something similar to a city about 50 minutes away. It's definitely doable if you have a car.

If you don't, well welecome to my world :P Get a lowpay job and work towards getting a car to open up your options.

xhin when did u become such a health nut

I prefer the term "conversationally challenged".

Slightly less than two years ago I was in really bad shape health-wise. I weighed 300lb, had no energy and a bunch of problems with various digestive systems and/or food. I'm still recovering from some of that, but I'm currently both the thinnest and the fittest I've ever been. Plus 85lb lighter. In the middle is a big pile of experimentation, deep introspection and hundreds of hours of research.

The closest is "State College" which is 30 miles, but that's where the "mountain" is, which closes. Harrisburg is the next closest, at about 60 miles away, and I honestly don't know how they handle those roads, since your average person in this area will take their chances with State College, instead. I heard the roads do get bad that way in the winter, but I don't have personal experience to say whether it's unrealistic or not. The issue there is, the wage requirements will spike even higher due to the gas to drive there. Moreover, from what i've seen from the few times i was there, there's not many opportunities there outside of service jobs (aka, table bussing).

If you don't, well welecome to my world :P Get a lowpay job and work towards getting a car to open up your options.

An alternative i was thinking about is taking a lowpay job and hope and pray that future employers will consider it just as good and possibly hire me as a carpenter or something, but i'll also be competing with everyone else in that factory, as well.

I agree that research is plagued with politics, but there are actually a lot of studies -- including meta-analyses and big, expensive clinical trials -- about metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, and the significance of leptin. There's a lot of money to be made there as these topics relate to cardiovascular disease and hypertension.

(thanks for the new quote thing, Xhin)

I should have clarified that I want to lose a little stomach fat and gain muscle mass. Just saying "I want to lose weight" is too vague.

I haven't been drunk in 20 days- my record for staying sober is over 2 months. I'm past that 1 week hump or whatever where I'm not craving it all the time. And it sounds stupid but if I just drink soda water out of a wine glass it gives the illusion to my brain that I'm drinking.

Ophelia I need to give you props for the Nathan avatar. I love that show and went to his live Q&A in Vancouver last month.

I drank last night but only a little. I was sipping on a vodka soda but with very very little vodka. My friend got us a bottle to split and I felt rude not taking a little. I wasn't anywhere close to drunk so I don't consider to breaking my sobriety. I felt worse about the 3 pieces of pizza I ate. But I ate pretty good today and I'm back on track.
