Pacific Rim: Uprising trailer
Posted: Posted October 8th, 2017 by Jet Presto

Dunno how I missed this the other day, but the trailer for Pacific Rim: Uprising has dropped:

Looks fun to me, even if it kind of appears to lose some of that Guillermo del Toro visual style and winds up looking a bit more like a more vibrant Transformers movie. It looks like it will have more Jaegers and subsequently more action, which is traditionally how kaiju franchises work. (It's been funny to me to hear complaints that Pacific Rim or Godzilla didn't have enough action, though that had largely come from people who are not really fans of the genre - which doesn't make the criticism invalid, just slightly ignorant to the history those films draw upon.)

I liked some of the shots in the trailer indicating that they will indicate human cost of these battles. Too often, these types of movies specifically show evacuations so fans can enjoy the casual destruction of cities, but it looks like we'll be seeing a lot more of that.

I am less into the return of the two scientists, as I thought they were tonally confusing for how much time they got in the first film. To me, they were among the weakest parts of the film, with a lot of wasted potential. It appears as though they will fulfill the same function they did last time.

Glad they're still using that anthem, though. There have been so few memorable themes coming out of Hollywood lately.

It looks all okay to me. I remember not liking the first Pacific rim trailer but I loved that movie so I'll definitely be watching this one.

These Jaeger's seem to move a lot faster than the ones in the first one which is understandable as those were older models and they had recommissioned the fastest Jaeger they had up until that point so of course advances have been made.

I agree on the visual style. When I looked at it I thought it look quite Transformersy. Not as good as the first film in that regard.

Still haven't watched Godzilla but did people really complain that the first Pacific Rim didn't have enough action? I remember it having loads...

Yeah. Or, I suppose the complaint was more about not enough Jaegar action. That all of the action basically came from Gypsy Danger while other Jaegars didn't get to do much.

It generally looks okay, I guess. But the weird sweeping shot at 1:55 looks hilariously bad to me.
