The Content Team, the new Global Rules and the Future.

Hello, everyone. Over the previous weekend, our benevolent overlord Xhin formed the Content Team, a selection of GT users to be saddled with the nebulous task of "figuring out what needs to be done and then implementing it". The team consists of a trustworthy and level-headed selection of well-established users (and also me) that have been afforded an impressive amount of freedom to determine and enforce policy on multiple levels.

Our first official action is to update the global rules of the site in order to move towards a more thorough and enforceable ideal of civil discussion and user protection. The new global rules are as follows:

0. No illegal content or behavior.

1. No flaming, trolling, baiting, using slurs or otherwise employing obvious personal vitriol. This includes insulting, defaming, harassing, encouraging injury towards or otherwise attacking a user.

2. No impersonating, doxxing (including information that is confidential instead of unknown), witch-hunting, raiding, reposting removed content or otherwise indirectly attempting to cause strife by way of conspicuous distribution of information, encouragement or attention.

3. No graphically obscene, disturbing or erotic content. This covers content that is hosted on the site, content that is embedded in the site and content that is linked to. This also includes obscenity in post titles, usernames, avatars and signatures.

4. No spamming, flooding, unapproved advertising, exploiting or otherwise manipulating or using the site for empty or disruptive content. This includes evading or interfering with staff action as well as interfering with reasonable use by the community.

Infraction may result in warning, tag or ban, depending on the severity and context.

These rules have been constructed by the Content Team in order to assure satisfactory coverage of what many users feel are notable weaknesses in policy that allow suboptimal user interaction. However, that doesn't mean that they're the best possible global rules. If you have ideas for how these (or anything else regarding the site) could be done better, please visit the Make GameTalk Great Again thread: http://gtx0.com/view.php?post=107400

We have other issues on deck to be addressed as well, first and foremost being reform of moderator policy. Issues that are also on our radar include moderator distribution and forum efficiency, but the most immediate issue is the fundamental health of the community.

I don't want to see people leave the site. I think it's a god damn shame when some ridiculous personal drama runs so hot and so long that it drives away people who have been coming here for years. Hopefully, this update of the site rules and the coming moderator reform will give us the focus and ability to defuse situations like that before they run their destructive course.

It's going to be interesting and probably chaotic for a while, but the important part is that things are changing because we are trying to improve the situation. We want to work with everyone because the community is why we're here and we're a part of it as well, but I am aware of and accept the fact that not everyone is going to like it.

Thank you for your time. Enjoy your stay at the new GameTalk.

It sounds good in theory but I'm still skeptical about how this will go in practice. Especially since Xhin isn't overseeing it himself and now we got people with probably differing opinions running the show. What matters is that this ends up being a good change and now a bad change. Change is not good unto itself. We'll see how it goes I guess. Or somewhat likely you will and I'll be away from the site for a while longer.

Also I see there still is no focus on bringing new people in...

Xhin does oversee the Content Team, though. He is aware of our discussions and it is hard-coded for him to be able to vote on our implementations if necessary.

Which is why we're making changes based on what the community (including you) has said needs to be done.

I've seen what Xhin has on track for advertising and it's solid. Mainly, though, the strongest asset for popularizing the site isn't the one guy at the top. It's the community.

Everything comes back to protecting the community so that it can flourish.

I tried to pick a group of people that are all very much on the same page (which is the complete opposite of the policies I've been supporting over the past couple years) but might have radically different ideas about how to implement it.

Also I see there still is no focus on bringing new people in...

This has been my sole focus since January. It's taken some time to get some projects done and some advertising strategies planned.

Ground's what's around

Well hiding our forums in the heading is a surefire way to guarantee no new members ever arrive. I can advertise though if you like.

I'm thinking about forming an advertising team as well when the time is right. I'll keep you in mind.

These rules are an ok start but they are in essence just the same as the ones that already existed so nothing has really changed here, except we have a new team with a "flashy title".

As I always used to say on the mod forum, it is the intent of the rule that matters not the specific wording. Anyone who tries to get away with something by citing a loophole is essentially admitting guilt.

Anyway my point is I don't see how this really changes anything but at least it's a sign that something might happen.

His lack of direct involvement is, imo a good thing. Xhin is great at making and developing the site, but I don't think he is the best at actually running it. He typically does stuff in the spur of the moment, sometimes with good results and sometimes with bad results.

Also can we know who is on the Content Team?

Such is the process of experimentation.

Also me if necessary. I can:

  • Fill in for a missing person

  • Break ties

I'll also weigh in to keep my vision of the site intact or provide valuable information.

My vision for this team is for them to become a tetrad that together wields superadmin power. Together they can basically take on my role that I've had for the last 8 years, which includes massive overhauls in staff systems, forum distribution, site policy, etc.

My vision for myself is to take on a role of creating (and staffing) teams to manage various aspects of the site as I develop it further. This then frees me up to do actual development, both of the code and of the ideas that are fueling this process.
