But seriously, guys. If you could change anything about site policy or global rules, what would you do? I don't want to hear about personal tiffs or exactly who you would ban. I want to know what internal changes you would make on the most fundamental level to move the entire site upward for the forseeable future.

A lot of us have talked about this in different places in the past, but I want to get something like a megathread for these suggestions.

I'm here because someone told me to post in this for some reason.

Fucking advertisement of some kind. The main hope for this site at this point is that it gets new people. It's absolutely a must. How to make people interested in this site though, I don't know but it needs to happen.

Mod bias, whether it's intentional or otherwise needs to stop. No excuses for it. If someone is doing literally the same thing as another person or worse there is no reason it shouldn't be dealt with as well. If someone can't enforce justly, they should be removed plain and simple. It doesn't matter how well they do otherwise.

Either a bigger crackdown on general assholery needs to happen or there may as well not be one at all. From what I recall, people could get away with slyly being an asshole so long as it seems "acceptable". Insults, blatantly exaggerated and false labels, particularly mean-spirited mockery ect. As long as you can still tell how toxic it can be at times, then there's still a problem anyway. This goes both ways, you can't call someone a nazi unless they are actually doing something nazi-like. You can't call someone a commie unless they are actually blatantly a communist. That sort of thing. Really when you think about it, all that sort of thing does is provoke even more toxicity and doesn't actually contribute to any real discussion.

Take traffic away from the political forum one way or another temporarily if nothing above happens except advertisement. I get that people like it but... when it helps create more toxic moments it just makes the site look worse than it has to right now. I mean how often do you see a problem outside of that forum that isn't just personal drama or drama that came from that sub-forum? Temporarily hide the forum if it must be that way and temporarily remove it from newest replies. This is a game site (or at least it should focus on anything but politics), and that's what needs to be focused on when (if) new people come in. Not seeing people take some jabs at each other over there. They don't need to see discussions rarely amount to anything productive. Plus I mean it seems like quite a few people only posted there because it was pretty much the only active sub-forum here. This means that people who may well have no business being there, are there. I know it sounds extreme, but I don't think most people will find the site attractive while that's all over the newest replies and they probably won't even know that they have the option to hide the forum while they're here.

In the future there should be more events like mafia to keep people engaged.

That's all I have for now but maybe more with come to me.

If you could, I think it could be useful. A thread from 2011, while not necessarily irrelevant, is a little absurd.

You should sign up for the next NIFE game. I'm bringing in a bunch of non-GT people too (see: advertising)

Can we have buttons on top and bottom of threads that jump to the bottom and top of the threads to save time finding and replying to the latest posts? Really helps when we get a ton of replies.

Gamefaqs has this feature on its boards where it shows the last post(and author), and you can click on the time of the last post to go straight to the most recent post(which is at the bottom of the thread). Neogaf also has a feature for buttons on the top and bottom of threads where you can go to the top and bottom of the threads.

edit:what happened to the 10 replies before me? Did I accidentally filter them?

Haven't we've been asking this question for 6 or 7 years? Here is my answer but it will go ignored: delete every forum except for 3. Have one for video game general, real life/politics, and one for feedback/complaints/site announcements. Maybe have a Pointless forum just for the tradition of having the Pointless forum. THERE ISN'T A REASON TO HAVE MORE THAN 4 FORUMS AT THIS POINT!!! Go extremely minimal. No more features.

I agree with you in spirit if not in exact number. I think we have an absurd amount of forums - this is something that I've brought up before, but which has been less of a concern lately compared to the trolling/flaming issues. Personally, I think it would do the site good if the forums were reduced to megaforums like you say. It's too late in the night to write up how I would divide the forums, but tomorrow I will.

Having roughly 40 forums just on the quicklinks is ridiculous. Overall, we probably have more forums than active users.

Ones I'd keep at a minimum:

  • Announcements -- Xhin announces updates
  • The Flowvamp -- Xhin makes plans
  • Feedback -- people ask Xhin to do stuff or stop doing stuff

  • World
  • Maybe merge real life with pointless
  • Stick RPG Chat, Drunjk, Jedi Sith, Axems, Sci-Math, Wrestling *somewhere* but maybe not on the quicklinks
  • Some kind of video game forum

  • The staff row Actually this could just be integrated with the User CP
  • The NIFE row and these could be integrated with NIFE better

Yes and just call it the General Forum.

Some kind of video game forum

Indeed and then maybe implement some way to categorise posts?

Like a # system or categories or something. So then you can have your one game forum, but people can filter/search for discussions on a specific game.

VGND has a filter system but I think it has to be manually set. For example there is a GWG filter, and obviously a filter for each platform. But also subfilters like Mario, Zelda, etc.

EDIT: however looks like the only way to search by the set categories is to click them if they are already assigned to a post. The preset categories should be added to the forum filter as an option to filter by.

    Edited September 28th by Vandy
    Vandy

Yea Xhin added the "topics" thing ages back, but as far as I recall that requires a mod to first create the right categories.

The reason twitter and the likes are so good at this sort of thing is because they allow for users to make a category on the fly.

Like just have a category field in the post that users can type anything in to or something simple like that.

I would propose something like the following:

  • whatever arrangement of site/admin related forums works for Xhin, because he knows how that stuff is organized and it works for him. General users shouldn't be too concerned about this.

  • Gaming News & Discussion

Merge VGN&D with Traditional Games (or whatever our tabletop forum is called), Dueling Cards and all the dinky little game forums that get about one post every 4 months.

  • Politics & Spirituality

Merge 9/11 and Spirituality. The userbase is already pretty close together and it seems natural for these two subjects to be together.

  • Technology & Science

Obvious match. Computer Help & Chat merged with Science & Math.

  • Art & Literature

Entertainment & Music merged with Literature, Animated and possibly Creative Outlet.

  • Roleplaying

RPG Chat plus all the dead setting forums like Jedi Sith, Covenant, Middle-Earth, etc. that seem to only exist for nostalgia.

  • Sports

Sports Center, now with 100% more Wrestling!

  • General

Drunjk plus Real Life plus Pointless plus the part of World that says "especially whatever else".

  • Edited September 28th by nullfather

fjkdsajfkdsjf I wrote up a post and lost it by clicking around the site.

Basically I agree with all but I would like for the General forum to have a name with a bit more personality. Maybe The Lounge, or something like that. But "General" feels bland. I would say Pointless but if we're merging Life here we don't want to give the impression it is for only silly topics, which Pointless has been used for in the past.

It pains me to say that all individual game forums should be done away with until a time comes that we have more people on the site to warrant them.

    Posted September 28th by Vandy
    Vandy

Global ban on the outermost level. Globally banned people shouldn't even be able to click on the forums or see them. It should tell you you're banned as soon as you type in www.gtx0.com. Don't even see the blue of the site. Just a black screen that says you're banned.

I don't want to sound dismissive but what is the difference if you can see the Home page or not? All functionality is gone.

    Posted September 28th by Vandy
    Vandy

Because I'll be honest, if I request a ban it helps me forget about this place more if I can't see it. And it's not like I will request a ban forever, but it would be nice if I do that all I get is an unceremonious black screen with nothing to click. Seeing the links just makes me regret the ban.

Sometimes this place is too much and I need a break.

It's supposed to do that already. I'll need to look into it when I get more time.

Merging computer and sci-math is a fantastic idea.

If we have only a few superforums I can replace the quicklinks with something much better.

The idea that people are allowed to request a ban makes the whole point of bans a joke.

Basically I agree with all but I would like for the General forum to have a name with a bit more personality. Maybe The Lounge, or something like that.

You have my vote for that. I think a few sites I have been to at various points called their general forums the Lounge.

Place is too addictive. I can get around a ban anyway. But it forces me to use my data this way so I will spend way less time here if globally banned.

Agreed with simplifying and condensing the forums. (Honestly, I haven't been on the Mass Effect forum in *months,* and I'm the moderator!)

I would be for more of a crackdown on toxic behavior, but I don't really know how you implement that, especially when many users are concerned about moderator biases.

I already made it clear that there should be no bias. That even applies to everyone, thus this is not about "factions". If you think it has something to do with some "faction" you won't even explain idk what to tell you. I don't even have much in common with Jet by the sound of it. We might have closer to centrist tendencies than several other users but eh. Can't speak for him on that.

Already answered that. Because I happened to notice it, and that sort of false and glaringly baseless accusation annoys the shit out of me. The only reason people call people a pedo without any reason to believe it is to bring that person down. It's one thing if you have proof, but that person clearly had malicious intent.

As for why I didn't do it for you, as I said last time I wasn't there to see it happen as far as I know.

I'm also on board with reducing the number of forums.

That said, I would propose that the 'major' old forums get archived in some way that preserves all the current content but prevents new content. I'd hate for the occasional Jedi Sith drop-ins to show up, not be able to find the forum, and disappear forever. That probably applies to a few of the other communities as well. Ideally these archived forums would have links to the proper 'new' forum prominently displayed.

The sad truth is there are 10 staff members and eight regular members. There isn't enough bad shit going on to warrant more than like uhh three people with mod powers. The rules should be don't post porn or gore and don't threaten people. Other than that it should be a free-for-all. All of you are over thinking everything.
