Lets talk about phones

A few posts have been made about how the site is atrocious to view on mobile. I agree. The issue in the past was always that most of the site was coded in tables and I can't really work with them (also jnline styles instead of css), but that's no longer the case. So I've decided to make GTX0 more mobile-accessible.

Since I recently washed my phone, I'll need some help with that -- I can at least test things by scaling down my browser, but I can't see what things actually look like on phones anymore unless I can get one of my spares to work (also an ongoing project).

Do most of you use phablets, or do a lot of you use the smaller phones? Does anyone go to the site on a tablet?

How much do you care about MyCards? Should I hide them in mobile view? What about the top icons, is a link that opens a vertical menu like the rest of the internet okay or should I try to keep the icons in some way?

How much do you use the quicklinks? Etc. I would probably make a second set of mobile quicklinks and use those (but toggle their visibility)

I use a shitty little Alcatel phone and to be honest I wasn't having much of a problem with the site beyond the "Post Message" button kind of wandering around and sometimes getting lost behind other buttons/the text field.

I never use it for mobile and probably never will.

I use gtx0 on mobile frequently (but I don't use the mobile version of the site). I have an iPhone and overall it works smoothly, though Newest Replies gets stretched pretty easily.

98 percent of my posts on this site come from a phone and I have no issues.

I'm on mobile 90 percent of the time. The only issue I have aside from the CP section being a mess to work with is that I can only type so many characters on the the reply box before the post message icon disappear s. Forcing me to go back and edit or make additional posts.

I post from a phone and never a tablet.

That must be an issue with your phone specifically. I never have a limit.

I browse the site a lot on mobile with my Samsung Galaxy S7. On the whole, it's not a bad experience, just a little quirky at times.

Here's a few screenshots:

I'd offer the following feedback:

The good:

  • Posts use large text that can easily be read without zooming in.

    The bad:

  • Replies use much smaller text, which requires zooming.
  • Mycards feel like they take up valuable screen space on mobile.
  • The quicklinks are easily the worst aspect of using mobile. Particularly if one gets underneath the other (like Hottest being under Newest Posts), there's a 50-50 chance I end up on the wrong link. This is probably a symptom of the quicklink text being very small.

How much do you care about MyCards? Should I hide them in mobile view?

I think they should be hidden.

What about the top icons, is a link that opens a vertical menu like the rest of the internet okay or should I try to keep the icons in some way?

Whatever is easiest to use and looks best. Not super particular. The worst part about the top icons on mobile right now is that they don't track with you as you scroll, so you have to go back up to find them if you need something.

How much do you use the quicklinks?

A lot. Although primarily it's just me going to 'hottest' so I can see what the active threads are and then visit them.

It's happened with my last 2 mobile phones as well. I doubt all of them had the same issue when it came to this site.

Considering they were different brands of phones and all ranging from apple, windows and Android OS...

Why not just make hottest replies your site feed and then exclusively click the site feed icon?

@S.O.H.: Can you show me how the CP panels are fucked up on your phone?

I didn't know that was possible. Where do you go to change it?

    1. Click "Filter"

    2. Click "Save"

    3. Keep it as "Default site view"

Fun fact: you can use any kind of filter as your site feed -- some users are using a newest replies that hides the world forum for example.

You can also have multiple presets if you use multiple site views.

This is what I was talking about with the "Post Message" button getting lost.

When that happens I tilt my phone and then tilt it back and it fixes it.

Yeah, changing the orientation kinda makes it remember where it's supposed to be. I think. It's not too much of a problem and it's only happened once or twice because I usually avoid writing out a textwall from mobile.
