9 is criminally underrated

9 is criminally underrated

Yeah, but the game is also really unforgiving. Jump-rope 100 times without failure, reach Memoria in around 12 hours to get the best weapon in the game. How will you even be able to finish some sidequests without looking up guides on the internet?

FF9 was really good, I've beaten twice. I liked it better than FF8.

Can we really still claim IX is underrated before? I feel like 99% of the time people online talk about it, it's about how it's underrated, one of the best (if not the best), and no one appreciates (all while having the highest score on Metacritic).

It's starting to feel like Final Fantasy IX is pretty accurately rated, really.

It's because people talk more about 6, 7, 8, and 10 more so than 9. People always talk about how cool Cloud and Squall are, yet no one talks about Zidane. You know why he's my favorite FF protagonist? BECAUSE HE'S NOT EMO AF! I'm not saying Cloud and Squall are emo (except for in spin off titles in which Cloud IS emo), but the stoic, brooding, pretends he doesn't care about people is something that I DESPISE. Zidane has moments of despair, but he's not like that throughout the whole game. Also, Vivi is my favorite FF character ever!

Uh yeah, it pretty much is accurately rated because everything you said was correct. Heck, I hear about FF9 more than I hear about FF8, and just about no one ever talks bad about FF9 either.

Squall doesn't qualify as emo, period - he's the complete opposite. He actually has very little emotion, while being emo means you are VERY emotional. He starts as broody and insensitive, then grows considerably over the course of the game, essentially into the Squall we see in KH2 - who is pretty damn awesome.

Whoops. Meant to say, "can we really say it's under-rated anymore. Not "before." I hear about IX just as much as I hear about all the rest at this point, so I think we can officially retired the "IX is under-rated" line.

Wish we could retired the "Cloud and Squall are emo" jokes as well. Neither is actually "emo," unless you go by a very loose definition in which reacting emotionally itself counts, in which case every character is "emo." I generally don't care for the stoicism as a defining character trait either, which both exhibit pretty prominently. However, it isn't just there because it's "cool" or "badass." That is a reductive way to look at it. The whole point of the story is to show the characters' growth and moving away from that dreary stoicism. If it weren't a character trait at the beginning, it would have no impact later as we see them change and develop as characters.

That's ultimately the problem with the way these characters are depicted in spin-offs or cross overs. They pick just a little piece of the character to import over, but as they are not central characters, or the games are not really that interested in character development (the way that the main FF games are very much character driven), there isn't much made of it.

I think you were going with "as before" or something but I picked up on what you meant.

Yeah definitely. I can see it more in Cloud, but even then, he's still broody sad instead of outspokenly emotional about everything. People are still misuse "emo" as bad as they are misusing the word "ironic."

Can't really think of any spin-offs the two have been in besides Dissidia or Kingdom Hearts, or at least where they got any story time. And in those instances, they depicted them pretty accurately and still not emo.

Final Fantasy IX is NOT underrated. It is, however, overlooked. It came out at a time when the PS2 was about to launch and was at the end of the PS1's life cycle. People are severely put off by the "childish" art style (which is ironic as IX is one of the most mature in the series). And it doesn't retain the futuristic, post-apocalyptic setting that VII and VIII used. I do agree that FFVIII is talked about less than several others, but I do hear it brought into discussion more than IX.

This was mostly a joke post, though. No hard feelings.

But seriously, Sakaguchi has officially stated that Final Fantasy IX is in fact his personal favorite.

yeah, that's pretty much what I was looking for. I came back to make a more "serious" reply the other day, but I felt awful and couldn't focus enough to find the words to properly convey what I was thinking.

6/7/10 are games I played and also regularly heard about. 8 I haven't played, but have still heard a fair bit about (mostly hate/praise for drawing/junctioning and all that jazz, as well as a certain spoiler that I don't actually understand because I don't have the context lol).

but 9 was largely a mystery to me until I actually played it. My knowledge ahead of time was basically

  • it has Vivi, the FF1-looking black mage
  • some girl named Garnet uses the name Dagger
  • there's a villain named Kuja

...and then it turned out to be a great game. I never really saw anyone talk about 9, but looking more attentively I've noticed now that now pretty much anything I do see is rather positive. So yeah, it definitely seems like a game that people really like if they've played it.
