NIFE: Crafting Plugin
Posted: Posted June 14th by Xhin

This is another MASSIVE update that adds item crafting, scrapping, and customizable recipes (that can also be learned through infobooks via the knowledge plugin)

Hosting

  • First thing you have to do is select the plugin via the plugin panel. Then the panel will appear in the plugin panels area.

  • Here you can add recipe categories. They can have names, descriptions, and avatars.

  • This lets you edit a recipe category. Pretty basic.

  • You can also add recipes here. Recipes can be one of three types:

  • Craft -- Craft multiple items together into one finished product
  • Scrap -- Turn one item into multiple items
  • Both -- A reversible recipe that does both of those things.

  • This lets you edit recipes. Pretty basic.

  • Here you can add ingredients to the recipe.

  • Down at the bottom, you can also set ingredient amounts. So for example this recipe takes 3 Paper and 1 Leather to craft.

  • You can also remove ingredients here.

    IMPORTANT NOTE

    When you set ingredients, you can only choose among nonclone items.

    When you craft, however, you can use clones, and end products are always clones.

    Clones also don't necessarily have to have the same name as the original item -- so for example for testing purposes I have a test item that takes Wood x1 and Metal x2, but instead of using "Metal" items I've been using items named "Iron" and "Copper".

    Anyway this doesn't matter much for the end-user because the interface is very streamlined..

    User Crafting Panel

  • First major update I did here was to make all the panels reference the same link structure, so I can make new panels much much easier. So you do get a nice little "Crafting" link in your NIFE User CP, your Profile and your Journal, as well as other player panels down the road.

  • You have three options here, I'll get to the top two in a bit.

  • You get to select the category of recipes that you know here. It'll show the avatar and the recipe category description.

  • Choosing a category goes here. You see the name of the recipe, the thing it makes, and the ingredients and maybe a craft button.

  • If you have ingredients that match a full recipe ingredient amount, that recipe amount will get highlighted in yellow. If you match ALL the recipe amounts then you get the [Craft!] button that lets you quick craft the item.

  • Meanwhile, a separate "Used:" section will show you all the items you're using for the recipe.

    So like in the "Create Books" recipe above, you have one paper, but the recipe requires two, so the "Paper" is not gold. However, you can see via the "Used: " that you have some of the ingredients you need.

  • In the Trial & Error panel, you can try to craft items together even if you don't have recipes for them. You can also do finer adjustments to crafting recipes if for example you have multiple "metal" items but want to use a specific one in a recipe.

  • If you manage to make something that you didn't already know the recipe for, you learn the recipe! and then can use it in the main crafting panel.

  • Here you can also attempt to scrap items. If you're successful, you learn the knowledge about how to scrap it and can use that in the main scrapping panel.

  • This works much like the Crafting panel except you're turning one item into multiple items -- here the "Item" column will turn yellow if you have an item for it.

    Cool I'll take a look. I was messing around with this in the General Test game but you hadn't implemented the crafting panel for users at that point so I was waiting for this :)

    Seems to work flawlessly with the recipe I setup before. Couple of requests though.

    I'll repeat my request that once you learn a recipe, it should be removed from the auto-action list.

    Also is there an option to make the knowledge books be consumables, so once you learn the knowledge the item gets removed? If not, could you add one. A checkbox on the recipe or item would be enough. Just so that you can have some that are one use and others that are permanent.

    Finally. In trial and error, I think it'd be cool where if you actually manage to craft something it will unlock that knowledge for you. So if someone crafts an Apple Pie they unlock the crafting recipe for it. Or if you salvage an Iron Sword you unlock the salvage recipe.

    In the general test game I made a crafting recipe for moon staff. It's set to be a crafting recipe, not scrapping and not both... Yet in trial and error I could scrap it and in the scrapping panel I seem to have a scrapping recipe unlocked?

    I think this is a bug? If I understand correctly it should be both crafting and scrapping if you select both, otherwise it is one or the other?

    @Moonray:

    Oh yeah that's a bug and I know why that happens. Will fix.

    I can certainly do that.

    Sure. Also an easy fix.

    Finally. In trial and error, I think it'd be cool where if you actually manage to craft something it will unlock that knowledge for you. So if someone crafts an Apple Pie they unlock the crafting recipe for it. Or if you salvage an Iron Sword you unlock the salvage recipe.

    It does that already :)

    Also note that crafting ingredients (or things that are scrapped) are limboed -- and there's a NIFE limbo setting that moves them to a random room.

    I will do another test in a while to be sure, but it didn't do so when I tried earlier.

    @Moonray: (again)

    Yet in trial and error I could scrap it and in the scrapping panel I seem to have a scrapping recipe unlocked?

    Fixed!

    I'll repeat my request that once you learn a recipe, it should be
    removed from the auto-action list.

    Fixed! (Actually it's based on books you've read, not recipes specifically)

    Also is there an option to make the knowledge books be consumables, so once you learn the knowledge the item gets removed? If not, could you add one. A checkbox on the recipe or item would be enough. Just so that you can have some that are one use and others that are permanent.

    Yeah if you hit the problem again tell me what you were doing it on and I'll try to replicate/fix it.

    So if you learn a recipe from trial and error, you would still get the auto-action to read the book?

    @Xhin:

    Trial and error still gives me a recipe to scrap an item that doesn't have a scrap recipe. Good news is trial and error doesn't let me scrap, so you just need to stop it from learning the scrap recipe when there isn't one :)

    Also did a test and managed to learn a crafting recipe via trial and error so not sire what happened earlier. Suspect it's because I'd been trying stuff before the final version.
