What we know about Anthem
Posted: Posted June 14th, 2017 by Moonray

Figured I would compile a list of confirmed details on the game:

  • Autumn (Fall) 2018 release estimate.
  • Will release on PC, PS4 and Xbone.
  • Shared-world action-RPG
  • Not an MMO, you can play with "up to 4 players".
  • Open world.
  • Quests are a thing.
  • You can use the jetpack to fly around.
  • Class is defined by which Javalin (exosuit) you wear. You can freely swap between these in the safe-zone.
  • Gear is equipped to these exosuits, so they also remember the build you've given them.
  • Crafting is a thing (no details)
  • "the great RPG character development and story progression that BioWare is known for."

  • Choices implied to be a thing in trailer & website. (Standard Bioware I guess).
  • Will be monetised via RNG loot boxes (we see one earned in game in the gameplay footage and many are assuming these will also be purchasable with real money).

  • settingsOptions

I wonder if you have AI companions if you don't have humans to play with.

Hopefully I can get into this one early on and not get left behind like with Mass Effect.

Is it to be assumed this game is taking the place of Mass Effect - or will Mass Effect games still be made as well?

I think it is safe to assume that this team has completely moved on from Mass Effect as even when this game reaches end of life they'll likely be making sequels for it or move onto something else again.

Bioware do have three other teams that I know of though. One is continuously working on the Star Wars MMO, one is for Dragon Age 4 (which as far as we know is still in development) and one was working on Mass Effect: Andromeda but the Andromeda team has been split and allocated to other projects (with some remaining to support Andromeda). It's worth pointing out that the Andromeda team sorta started out as support for the other Bioware teams (making DLC, or adding extra manpower where needed) so they're likely to go go back to being that.

If I had to guess I'd say they will likely just abandon Mass Effect if this game does well and at this point I wouldn't mind that TBH. We had a good run with Mass Effect, time for something new.

It's painful to think about Mass Effect being thrown to the wayside after a half-assed attempt with Andromeda.

Apparently Drew Karpyshyn is one of the writers for Anthem, so that's promising. Interested to see more, but expectations are low with BioWare these days (I know, different teams and all, but still).
