Story: The overall adventure including plot (twists) and world building/background. Lore would be here as well even though many games share the same more.
Art Direction: So the visual aspects of world building and character design/weapon appearances/clothing for npcs and such. Obviously FF13 is prettier than FF6, but we are going by personal preference.
Music: Which game had the best overall score? And which game had the best overall single piece of music.
Best WTF Moment: I can think of a number of these.
Best Main Character: The best protagonist.
Best Villain: The best antagonist.
Best Overall Character: Self explanatory.
Best Overdrives/Limit Breaks: (based on how awesome they are, not necessarily damage)
Best Summons: (again, aesthetically)
Best overall game and why:
For fun

Worst Character:
Worst game and why:

There are 18 Replies

Story: 6 (Dunno that I think of any FF really having a truly "great" story overall, but 6's was always interesting to me given the general politics of the world, the fact that the villain kinda wins, and the emphasis on character-driven sidequests)

Art Direction: 6 (was torn between this and 9, but I like more of the steam-tech looking technology mixed with classic fantasy world look of 6 a bit more)

Music: 7 (Really is a tough call, but I think this has the most tracks that stick out in my brain)

Main Character: 9 (I like Squall's function in 8's narrative, but it was nice to get away from the mopey dopey bros from 7 and 8.)

Villain: 6 (Kefka is one of my favorite video game villains)

Overall Character: 6 (I'm a sucker for Locke and Celes)

Summons: Look, I dunno that I think it's ultimately the best or my favorite, but Knights of the Round has an absurdity to it that I just flipping love. Otherwise, I probably got the most use out of Doomtrain. 8 probably had my favorite summons as a whole (even though I kinda hated rapidly tapping square a whole bunch).

Overdrives/Limit Breaks: Not sure I really have any favorites. I did enjoy Sabin's combo moves in 6, though.

Best overall game: 6

Favorite though: Look, I really love 8. Probably the most flawed game up to the PS2 days, but there's just something about it that really resonates with me.

For fun: I mean, 12 has what I find to be probably the most enjoyable combat system for fun. I don't want that every game, but I enjoyed fighting more in 12. I just didn't enjoy most other aspects of it.

Don't really have any "worsts."

Story: VII.
Art Direction: VI, though any FF where Amano had a major part in the visual design is close.
Music: Best overall score is inconclusive for me. Best individual piece is either the boss theme from VII or the overworld theme from VI.
Best WTF Moment: Cloud dressing as a woman changed my life.
Best Main Character: Cloud.
Best Villain: Venat.
Best Overall Character: Garland.
Best Overdrives/Limit Breaks: The Quickenings in XII. Very satisfying to pull off, with great visual effects.
Best Summons: VII, mostly for Knights of the Round.
Best overall game and why: probably IX. The maturity of the late PS1 cycle plus a dank visual aesthetic, good characters all around.

Worst Character: Rinoa is a useless piece of shit.
Worst game and why: II, because the leveling/combat was so broken that I couldn't bring myself to finish it.

Story: Final Fantasy X -- It's difficult to recreate the same emotion on subsequent play throughs, and the game doesn't have a lot of base value replayability, but I still remember fighting the tears the first time during Yuna's speech, and during her talks with the Maesters, Kelk on Gagazet, and Yunalesca. I thought that it was a really strong performance and Auron, Lulu, Seymour, and Rikku had good performances. I often shit on James Arnold Taylor and his laugh is still cringe worthy especially after the tenth or eleventh playthrough. But it isn't his fault scenes weren't skippable and I don't think his portrayal of Tidus was inaccurate, I just don't really like Tidus. The scenes with his father were touching and the scenes where he wasn't whiny, and was more of a leader were not too bad at all. His story arc was very touching and I think how much Yuna cared about him made me care more too. Suteke da ne is not the most powerful piece of music in the franchise, but the timing of it during the final credits is difficult to ignore if you have any empathy in your system at all given what she says. I think if FFX is graded on story as it's only merit, it gets a perfect X. Even if it is a movie you only need to see once or at most twice. Wakka might knock that down to an IX.8, God he was bad. I am glad he shut up for the most part during the exchange with Yunalesca. And for most important parts in the game. But his exchange with Rikku was touching too.

Art Direction I give to FFVII - The pixels they used were dreadfully awful and yet the character models we're able to convey so much emotion anyway. In battle you could see the beginning of what a 3D RPG was capable of, and the attacks and weapons we're stunning despite the limitations.

Music: FF8 all the freaking way. Even just the theme walking around timber, a very forgettable part of the game, is something I can totally jam to. The card game, boss theme, and the sorceress boss theme and just so many other themes you wouldn't expect to be great but are. Attack on dollet. One between a plank and peridition. Man with the machine gun. For a single theme, I still won't be leaving FF8. Liberti Fatali takes the cake. Maybe just because of the awesome gunblade duel.

Best WTF Moment:
Probably bringing the ring to Rydia's village in FF4. I really wasn't expecting that.

Best Main Character: Definitely Vaan. XD Um. Hmm. Maybe Lightning? If not her than Squall or Cecil.

Best Villain: Seymour is pretty creepy. And gives a strong performance to boot.

Best Overall Character: I really like Balthier, and I feel bad he had to be in such an awful game.

Best Summons: Eight for sure. I am biased though, it was my first game.

Best Limit Break: Rikku's Mix was fun to play with.

Best Overall Game: Final Fantasy VIII - few games are as replayable and addictive as FF8. FFX would have nabbed this if it was a bit more difficult and longer. I understand why people say VI though. I am just stuck in it.

Worst Character: Hope. I can't stand him.

Worst Overall Game: Well Ii, bit you can't really call that a game. So I am gonna go with Final Fantasy VIII. The plot made 0 sense, unless you go by Squall is Dead theory, and then it was entertaining but made even less sense. The draw system is broken as shit, The limit breaks are OP as fuck.

FF8 is the best game in the series while simultaneously being the absolute worst.

Story: 2 (Not every game where your brother is brainwashed)

Art Direction: 10 (Has the best looking outfits in the whole franchise in my opinion)

Music: 9 (easily a compilation of some of Nobuo Uematsu's best work)

Best WTF Moment: 15 (Noctis' ancestor is initial source of Daemons)

Best main character: 13 (Lightning is the only one who screams badassery)

Best Villain: 6 (Kefka will always be the ultimate evil in my book)

Best overall character: 9 (Vivi will forever be the greatest black mage)

Best overdrive/limit: 7 (Gotta love Vincent's monstrous forms)

Best summons: 9 (Gotta love that phoenix)

Best overall game: 2 (That which does not kill me only makes me stronger, literally spent first 6 hours increasing hit points by attacking party characters)

Worst Character: 8 (Squall, totally emo, gives everyone the cold shoulder, seems to hate himself most of all) also thinking 12 (Penelo her only purpose in the story is to bridge with Larsa) and 13 (Sazh and Vanille both fall under this category of terrible characters Sazh is whiny and Vanille is just plain annoying)

Worst Game: 8 (why do I need to have a summon junctioned in order to use items)

I actually kinda like Sash, he seems like a realist and he has a lot to lose too so no wonder he seems like he is having a bad day.

Story: probably 6. The mid-game "oh shit" in particular was cool and pretty damn unexpected, and the impression it made is definitely a big factor in this choice. 7 is pretty close, but some aspects of it never really hit home for me.

Art Direction: tough, because I feel like a bunch of different styles deliver in different ways. I'm just gonna say 5 because I like its sprites and the fact that every party member had distinct outfits for every job.

Dancer Bartz looks suave af
Dancer Faris is a total hottie...and I'm just now realizing really reminds me of Shantae
White Mage Krile is kitty mage c:

Music: nope, sorry, can't do it. Too much good music all over the place. And playing Theatrhythm only made it worse by exposing me to quality FF music from games I haven't even played. A couple of favorites that spring to mind are 7's boss theme and Battle at the Big Bridge from 5. Also the boss theme from Mystic Quest is a goddamn masterpiece; everybody hates on that game and I say fuck 'em.

Best WTF Moment: idk about best, but the biggest was definitely exploring 7's Honey Bee Inn.

Best Main Character: either Zidane from 9 or Bartz from 5.

Best Villain: I always liked ol' Kefka from 6. He's just so actively shitty of a person that you want to punch his clowny face in. Ardyn (extra text to disguise this spoiler woooo~) from 15 was pretty good too, though the janky-ass story wasn't very conducive to getting that across.

Best Overall Character: idk, I like a lot of characters for different reasons. Galuf and Krile from 5, Sabin, Edgar, and Celes from 6, Tifa from 7...this is one of those times when my all-around indecisiveness really shines.

Best Overdrives/Limit Breaks: Tifa from 7. Just gonna go ahead and pummel your ass with all my limit attacks, in a row. Giant robot? Whatever. I'll powerbomb that fucker let's GO.

...6's Sabin and his ability to suplex a train obviously deserve an honorable mention, though it's really not an equivalent "super move" or anything.

Best Summons: 7 is like the only time I got much practical use out of them, really. Summon materia and their flexibility were great. Compare that to 15, where summoning Ramuh for the first time is like "holy SHIT that was amazing"...and then the summon system devolves into semi-random chance and 90% of the time you get to use one it'll be his gnarly old hand scooping you up again and you appreciate the damage but it's otherwise pretty played-out

Best overall game and why: hard to say. I had a ton of fun playing with classes and stuff in 5 although doing so can be awfully grindy to replay or anything. 6 is pretty great all around, and I feel like 7 was as well but it's been a lot longer since I played that so I don't know how much might be nostalgia and/or forgetting the low points. 9 was a really solid game as well, but it had its share of weaknesses.

Worst Character: LUNAFREYA SUCKS SHIT AND ACTIVELY MAKES 15 WORSE

...as playable characters go, probably someone like Umaro from 6, who I never used because there were plenty of more interesting characters to pick from. Cait Sith from 7 is also a prime contender. I mean, Quina from 9 was weird and I didn't care for it very much, but at least Quina felt useful (and is therefore not in the running here).

Worst game and why: FF2 is an affront to game design. Sure, I'd love to grind every single stat, spell, and weapon type individually on every character - hang on while I beat up my own party for an hour or so! There's more to hate than that, but that's really all it needed to "win" this category for me. It's unfortunate, because there were some parts of the game that I did like...but I have no desire to replay it ever again.

Frankly if SE are in the business of big budget remakes like FF7, 6 needs to be the next one. That game would look amazing as a fully realized modern RPG. I mean yeah some mechanics would change but as long as the plot remains things can be forgiven for not sticking to snes game mechanics right?

ehh...depends what you're changing. Trying to fix something that's not broken is asking for trouble, and when you're dealing with something as revered as 6 and 7 it's especially tricky.

if, for instance, they remade 6 with 15's combat system, that'd be terrible. If they managed to make a good action-combat system that adapts the old skills and such, that could be cool...but I imagine it'd be challenging to implement it well for the entire playable cast. But in either case I stand behind the idea that there's nothing inherently wrong with turn-based combat, and I enjoy playing both types.

What if they evolve turn/real time based combat and refine it? It doesn't need to be an open world game. 15 isn't very popular.

Surely the PS2 isn't the epitome of what that system can achieve. The Switch and PS4 have so much power behind them.

Story: Chrono Trigger
Art Direction: FFXIII. The Fal'cie and the summons really make this but really everyone but Hope (whose design is tad bland, sorry) is really cool. The l'Cieth are cool too, mostly.
Music: FFX. Every track's a goddamn masterpiece.
Best WTF Moment: Unsent Auron.
Best Main Character: Marche of FFT, because he has a well-defined personality but also hidden depths in the countless interpretations of his motivations.
Best Villain: Yunalesca. She's beautiful, a deadly bossfight, eminently despisable, and unlike Seymour who's evil-from-a-mile-away, sort of blindsides you.
Best Overall Character: Auron, FFX.
Best Overdrives/Limit Breaks: FFXIII, because in what other game can you summon a valkyrie who transforms into a F1 racer and drift your enemies to death?
Best Summons: still FFXIII
Best overall game and why: XII, because it's deep in story, gameplay and exploration, in spite of Vaan and Penelo being non-characters. There aren't any weird deus-ex-machinas, the political intrigue makes a lot of sense and the game tends to utilize the iceberg principle very well. There's tons to do, the license board gives you many options and you will need every one of them to stand any chance against countless heinous superbosses. The gambits make real-time strategy with automated allies very viable, which is exceedingly rare.

Worst Character: Vanille, because she adds nothing to the plot that Fang couldn't herself, her weapon is aggressively stupid, her actress clearly doesn't know what accent she's even attempting and oh my *god* if you don't stop moaning every time a l'Cieth so much as brushes your leg we're gonna rent you a room and lock you in it until Cocoon implodes. She gains no points for being cute with Fang, because Fang deserves better.

Story: Final Fantasy VI

Art Direction: Final Fantasy VI

Music: Final Fantasy VIII

Best WTF Moment: Cloud in a room with homosexual bodybuilders.

Best Main Character: There are many I like, but if I had to pick one, I would probably choose Celes from FFVI.

Best Villain: Ultimecia

Best Overall Character: Idk? Faris (FFV), Celes/Locke (FFVI), Cid/Yuffie (FFVII). It's difficult to pick one, because there are many that are good in different ways. Kefka (for obvious reasons).

Best Overdrives/Limit Breaks: Zell's Duel and here is why https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZEjtJ-Tfsw

Selphie's: The End is the best limit break in FF8, but it is extremely rare to trigger, Zell has the most damage potential of any character based on the whole button input - time setting, Irvine has potential to do a lot of damage too, but is limited to the amount of ammo he has.

Best Summons: Bahamut was always the most satisfying summon to use. But I also like Magus Sisters in FFX since they are basically acting as 3 separate characters in the game (and more characters to control = more fun)

Best overall game and why: Final Fantasy V (gameplay-wise), Final Fantasy VI (story-wise)
For fun
--

Worst Character: Gau - Spend countless of hours learning every Rage he has only to never use him in the main party.
Worst game and why: Final Fantasy: Dimensions. Though I like the job system, the game's story felt very clichéd. The jokes in the game were stupid or overused, and just made me cringe, and there were too many repetitive elements that played out over and over again.
