Needless to say, there will be spoilers in this post because I'm talking about the ending. In order to avoid having stuff spoiled for you, if you have not beaten Breath of the Wild yet, including all of the main quest stuff, then you should probably not be reading this thread.
Now without further ado...
I'll be honest, I'm kind of disappointed that the ending I got before is the same exact thing as the "best" ending, except in the best ending they add an extra cutscene. I'm also disappointed with how little ending there is.
Think back to Ocarina of Time or Twilight Princess - their endings were pretty extensive in comparison. They showed a lot of stuff, they showed a lot of characters, they tied up all the loose ends nicely. Breath of the Wild just kind of.... ends. There is a lot they could have done with the ending. They could have shown us a follow-up with the important characters at each of the four divine beasts, or with Impa, or the Great Deku Tree.
For what it is, I don't think the ending is bad. I really like that moment Link and Zelda shared in the good ending. It just seems like there's a lot of wasted potential here, especially compared to previous Zelda endings. Sure, not all Zelda games had very extensive endings, but I feel like a game that cared to show us flashbacks and the backstory of these close friends of Link could have done something more with them in the ending. Also for a game as ambitious as this, it just seems odd that the ending is so bare-bones.
Going back to the champions again, I actually have one big gripe. You can skip the divine beasts and go straight for Ganon, and that's cool. If you do decide to go for the "good" ending, you'll do all four divine beasts and then fight Ganon, which is still cool. But then when you DO fight Ganon.... I really feel like Nintendo dropped the ball here. They take a chunk of Ganon's health bar away... yay? I guess it's cool that they help you with your fight, but that is such weak payoff for all the adventuring you did to save them, all the character development you saw through flashbacks and from interacting with their peoples. All of that was building up to nothing but a handicap for Ganon and literally nothing added to the story.... That's just so weak.
If there's anything else I can say about the ending, I'll say that whole final battle was fantastic. Calamity Ganon is, in my opinion, the coolest and scariest version of Ganon ever. And then we fight his beast form, and he's HUUUUUGE. From a gameplay perspective, beast Ganon was too easy and kind of anticlimactic, but from a story and presentation perspective it was awesome. Then Zelda comes out and spirit-bombs the fuck out of him! Zelda kicked serious ass and was absolutely not a "damsel in distress", as certain imbeciles would try to have you believe... (I could make a whole 'nother post about just this topic but I won't)
I guess that's all I've got to say about that. What are your thoughts on the ending?
