My Impressions of BotW so far after beating the Prologue

First off, here is what the game looks like on the Wii U:

Now there might be some spoilers ahead for those that haven't played the game yet so you've been warned.

------

I like how the game opens, it's very much hearkens back to the original Legend of Zelda on the NES where you are given very little information at the beginning and have to figure out your way around. I can see where this game takes alot of ques from other games also. Like walking out of the shrine of resurrection is very similar to walking out of the tunnel for the first time in the opening of Oblivion. And from there you are free to run around anywhere.

The gameplay is very much a blend of classic Zelda with other elements seen in other games, like with the weapons and shields breaking after repeated use. I find myself hoarding the stronger weapons and shields for the stronger enemies while using the weak ones I find laying around for the normal enemies. I have died more than a few times, thats for sure. But most of the time it was because I wasn't paying attention. It also took me while to figure out how to properly cook food and what combinations to put them in. It also took me a little bit to figure out how to make elixers to give me cold resistance, but once I got them figured out I was able to make a few to last me long enough. Even though I bought a guide with the game, I am trying to see how much I can figure out on my own and how far I can get before using it.

Each of the 4 Shrines in the prologue do a great job of introducing your abilities, and showing you how to use them without making it a long complicated process. You literally run in, pickup and new ability for your Shiekah Slate, use it to get past the door or wall blocking you, use the ability to get the treasure chest inside, and then go talk to the monk to get the Spirit orb and teleport out.

Also, The twist about the old man being the Former King of Hyrule wasn't at all surprising, I kind of saw it coming really. But I did like the voice narrated explanation of what happened leading up to you waking up after beating the prologue.

The graphics are surprisingly good on the Wii U. I have been doing most of my playing on the GamePad, so it wont hold a candle to the Switch version, but when played on a HDTV it looks crisp and clear. There are some jaggies, mostly around shadows and thin blades of grass. They can be seen else where too, but after a few minutes I barely notice them.

I'll let you guys know what more I think when I have progressed further into the game. I felt after beating the prologue I had enough to give my initial impressions.

Spoilers just in case...

Speaking of cooking food, I am the ultimate consumer of dubious meals. That won't hurt you...probably.

"He looks similar to WW's Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule. I guess that's who he is though, right?"

Yeah, I am guessing this LoZ takes place MANY years after WW.

"got a good look at that chinpuff and I was sure it'd be coming sooner or later"

No irrelevant character ever has an epic beard like his lol.

Damn dude, lol. I try to keep it clean with the exception of my mustache. I have to shave at least once a week to keep if from getting scruffy and every 3 days to get rid of the 5 o'clock shadow. /OT
