Which is your preferred starter for each generation?
Posted: Posted February 20th by Jahoy Hoy

Simple question - which starters are your favs? No, this isn't about stats, this is about design and general preference. For example, I don't care how uber Blaziken is, I'm pretty much always going to go with Treecko for Gen 3. Do you tend to gravitate toward a particular type? Or maybe it is about stats? I'm sure that there has been a thread about this already, but now that we've had some time with SM, let's do it again!

1. Charmander
2. Totodile
3. Treecko
4. Hardest one for me. I've only played twice and used Piplup first and then Chimchar second. Both were solid contributors to the team, so...tie?
5. Snivy? I guess?
6. Froakie
7. Rowlet

Wow, gen 5 sure had some non-event starters. I think that's the only gen where the starter didn't reliably make it all the way through the main game with me (or maybe it was that there were so many rad ghosts in the gen).

There are 16 Replies

Gen 1: Bulbasaur
Gen 2: Cyndaquil
Gen 3: Torchic
Gen 4: skipped gen
Gen 5: Tie between Tepig and Oshawott
Gen 6: Froakie
Gen 7: skipped gen

Gen 1: Squirtle
Gen 2: Totodile
Gen 3: Torchic
Gen 4: Turtwig
Gen 5: Oshawott
Gen 6: Froakie
Gen 7: Rowlet

My choices are pretty much all about the design, though I do tend to prefer Water-types in general. I agree that Gen 5 has the most lackluster starters--that one and Gen 3 are the only two that I regularly pick the same starter (Gen 3 because Blaziken is one of my all-time favorites, but Gen 5 because I don't really like the other options). The rest I switch it up between playthroughs, especially Gens 1, 4, and 6 (where I find the starters pretty balanced).

1. probably Charmander, since I don't go grass a lot and opt for something more interesting than a mono-water Blastoise

2. Cyndaquil, also consider Totodile after the physical/special split

3. Torchic or Mudkip

4. hard choice for me as well. Probably either Piplup or Chimchar

5. also difficult, probably lean Oshawatt

6. I've only used Chespin (he was fine), would try Fennekin next time around

7. Popplio, not sure who I'd go with if I play a third version or something. I like the idea of Decidueye and he has a cool typing, but his look in-game just did not do it for me at all.

Grass is generally one of the less-appealing types to me, so my choices reflect that. Treecko is the only starter I ever stopped using (late game and he was a Sceptile by then, but I just wasn't feelin' him enough to keep him around.

1. Squirlte or Bulbasaur
2. Cyndaquil
3. Treecko
4. Piplup
5. Oshawott
6. ???
7. Rowlet

That was easier than I thought it was gonna be haha.

I favor the grass and water types over the fire types for some reason. Cyndaquil is the exception because he's too damn cute. I would say Litten for gen 7 but Incineroar's design made me bitter about the whole line.

Treecko I use for sentimental reasons (my first Pokemon ever!). I didn't end up using my starter in gen 6. I used to strongly dislike the gen 5 starters, but Oshawott grew on me. Piplup I like because it's cute, but also I love that it grows into a steel type.

Not gonna lie, my choices are like 99% based on design.

1. squirtle
reason: it is a squirrel turtle
2. cyndaquil
reason: adorable little fire-breathing bowling pin
3. treecko
reason: my favorite pokemon game is mystery dungeon explorers of time in which grovyle is just so cool
4. piplup
reason: cute penguin
5. oshawott
reason: cute otter!!

that is as many generations as i have played

Boo!

lmao @ cyndaquil as a bowling pin

designs tend to be important for me when I pick out a team, but overall it doesn't seem to come up as much for starters - there's not as much "awesome 100% added let's go" or "haha no way never picking that" as there is with non-starter 'mons.

shoutout to how much more I liked Grovyle's design than Sceptile's and hated evolving it

@sus Our answers and reasons are pretty much identical haha.

@Pirate_Ninja I'm the exact opposite when it comes to designs haha (in that I care way more about design for starters than I do for my team). But totally agree about Grovyle.

i am in agreement w the grovyle/sceptile assessment as well
tbh i prefer a lot of the middle evolutions to the finals lol

Boo!

Lol @ how polar people are on Treecko as a starter here. I definitely see the argument for Grovyle's design - it's very good and Sceptile wasn't exactly the direction I was expecting that line to take. Nevertheless, the forest dino grew on me hard after I evolved it.

For those who liked Grovyle and not Sceptile, what do y'all think of Mega Sceptile's design?

oh I do care about how the starter looks, I just think that overall there aren't as many amazing/terrible choices that I feel strongly about.

Mega Sceptile is a step up imo - Grovyle is like some limber young blade fighter apprentice, and then when he evolves it looks like he got old and smarmy and out of shape. After megavolving he looks serious about kicking some ass again at least.

Totodile and Cyndaquil are the best.

The only other good one with is the owl and the frog ninja

I only played 4th gen, so this is purely opinionated nonsense biased by the anime:

1. Charmander
2. Totodile
3. Treecko!
4. Well, I had a Piplup. Can't say I preferred it, but my Empoleon was really amazing.
5. Oshawatt
6. Froakie
7. I don't really like any of them. Litten?
