Overwatch Single Player?

One of my friends has a habit of bringing up that Overwatch should have a campaign mode. Now, this friend has played maybe 30 minutes of the game in total and has never played any competitive multiplayer-only (or multiplayer focused) game of any kind; League, CS:GO, TF2 are all a mystery.

I've always argued that a single player mode would be filled with watered down AI that would detract from a game whose sole purpose is team synergy. While a short campaign would be nice to get some cinematics with backstory, I believe in all resources being put into more maps, characters, and patches over time. Blizzard has been doing a great job with updating the game, as well as developer updates that show they're listening to feedback from the community. My point being, a campaign would take away resources from the dev team for future updates, it would not portray an accurate representation of online gameplay, and would ultimately be a sub-par experience in contrast to the extremely fun multiplayer experience.

Thoughts?

Overwatch definitely needs to be multiplayer-only, but I don't think a "Campaign" is out of the question. I think modes that re-enact key Talon/Overwatch/Vishkar/Omnic/Los Muertos conflicts and that establish something resembling canon could be interesting, and a co-op mode pitting a small team of players against hordes of CPU Omnics would work nicely, too (TF2 did so with great success).
