The Long Wait for Final Fantasy XV

Do any of you remember 2006? It was certainly a different time. I was a fifteen-year-old high school student. Now I'm twenty-five with aspirations of becoming a homeowner. I have matured and seen life with a more adult perspective. It's funny how much I have changed with this past decade. And now, what was originally announced as Final Fantasy Versus XIII (renamed Final Fantasy XV in 2013) is a mere eight days from release. Eight agonizing more days....

I have the Ultimate Collector's Edition, hardback strategy guide, and season pass DLC (my first DLC that I've ever bought outside of Super Smash Bros. Wii U DLC) paid off and now I'm just waiting. I anticipate tears. I anticipate joy. But most of all, I anticipate a great Final Fantasy experience. The concept of the game (a modern world set in a fantasy backdrop based on reality) has always had me hooked. The prospect that Final Fantasy would return to form with a true open world, flyable airships, chocobos, and so on with an addition of a Kingdom Hearts-esque combat system sounded like a dream game to me. Not to mention, again, the modern fantasy world is something I hadn't really seen before.

This is a video from a channel called Dark Pixel Gaming. They discuss a lot about Final Fantasy as well as other RPGs and games. Needless to say, I enjoy their content. Check out the video and share your story about the this damn ten-year wait we've all had to endure, haha!

I plan to write a review of this game. If anyone is interested in possibly doing a collaboration, do let me know.

There are 46 Replies

can't watch the video right this minute but I'm making a mental note of it for later

I noticed season pass placeholder-things on the shelf at GameStop the other day and it made me wonder - do you know what DLC they have planned? I dunno if they've released anything about it and was sorta curious (they'd much rather inundate me with emails about FFXV-related contests and bullshit I don't care about, thanks guys).

As one of the nutters who actually bothered to take vacation time just to binge-play this game, and given that I have waited the same length of time and also feel the same about essentially growing up waiting for this game, I would certainly be interested in a collaboration review.

I am hoping so hard this game lives up to its hype.

The season pass comes with six DLC packs, which are:

"Booster Pack"

"Episode Gladiolus"

"Holiday Pack"

"Episode Ignis"

"Episode Prompto"

"Expansion Pack"

These packs also include co-op online multiplayer, allowing you to play as Prompto, Ignis, and Gladiolus. BUT you have to have a PS4+ account. Shitty, but it's something.

I'll be getting the DLC as well.

Also, like a true nerd, I will be wearing my new Noctis jacket while playing the game.

You have the jacket Noctis wears? Um, pictures, please?!? Wait, Versus XIII jacket or XV jacket?

I'm vacationing ten days in a row for this! I currently have a relationship and my special lady will be around for a few days during said vacation, so I'm worried I'll make her bored, haha! Guess I'll do other things with her. But when she goes back home....back to FFXV!

The XV version. I haven't taken extensive pics with it to show it off really well, but here's the Amazon link to the exact one I got:
https://www.amazon.com/Fantasy-Noctis-Caelum-Synthetic-Leather/dp/B01GOK1986/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1480352662&sr=8-1&keywords=noctis+jacket
The only thing about it that bugs me is the shoulder buckles. It's not like a real shoulder buckle (like in the game), it's like a little belt that isn't sewn into the jacket. It just looks odd. Overall quality seems really good though, definitely not a cheap knock off cosplay made from bad polyester. Also it will look very much like the v13 outfit if you zip it up.

I am currently single so I have no distractions to worry about, my heart will be all for reaching Lunafreya...

The hype is real! I've seen more ads for this game the past few weeks than any other game, ever. I saw two commercials for it during one commercial break last week during Supergirl and The Flash. My nerd pride was real.

Hard to say, considering the extra price is for the Season Pass which is for DLC that hasn't been released yet.

Looks like a fun game. but the camera is horrendous.

The camera isn't that bad, not really any worse than a game like Assassin's Creed.

So far, the game is VERY FUN. It is deserving of the hype. I'm only a few chapters in (because I am taking my sweet time and doing most of the sidequests) and I can already say this game easily beats every FF title since FFX by a landslide. Definitely willing to bet it will be better than FFX and indeed, perhaps the best FF title to date.

This game is amazing so far. I find the targeting a bit awkward and the camera can get funky once in a while, but otherwise it's been FANTAS(Y)tic.

We've been doing sidequests like crazy. I think we'll start focusing on the main story. We're, ah, overleveled, heh.

how far along are you?

Posted December 2nd, 2016 by Pirate_Ninja
Pirate_Ninja

We're at the end of Chapter 3, I think. 26 hours in. Yep. We've been doing A LOT of side stuff.

I understand the targeting better now. It could have been better, though. One flaw, and as expected, are the glitches. They are appearing only rarely, but twice the game has glitched bad enough it caused the game to crash.

Admittedly the targeting system isn't great, especially in areas with trees around. Never really seen a perfect targeting system, though KH games did seem to do it better than this. But it isn't a nightmare either. It's tolerable.

Seeing as my vacation was only one week, I had to start skipping side quests to hurry and finish the story. I am kind of wondering if there's a secret movie ending, because the very last ending scene I got left me like "What just happened..."

Granted, I might have to play the game again after I get the day one patch (accursed limited data plans) because it supposedly adds scenes related to Kingsglaive and the Omen trailer. I am not sure how much stuff it clarifies and if it adds anything to the ending - they did say they intended on having the physical copy as complete as they could and they better not have intended on releasing the full ending or whatever only on a patch.

I'm going to stop there with the review until at least Laxan finishes the game, so nothing is spoiled - even then I'll still be using spoiler tags of course.

If you could, Laxan, please note anything you think might be add-ons from the patch to see if I really need to do the game over just to experience the extras or if I can just keep playing my currently saved game.

I've got one more day of vacation. We're at the very end of the game. I will still do the review, yes.

I have mostly good things to say about it, though, it's not perfect. And that's okay. It is still an amazing game and probably the best Final Fantasy since IX and X.

Yes I have. I loved the Back to the Future II line Noctis utters. It's just a shame it comes as a end-game feature and has such limited use as a flying car. The best bit about it is the infinite fuel and the fact it looks like a Batmobile.

so trevor would the final grade on the game be a B+ or a B?

Posted December 8th, 2016 by s.o.h.

Tabata has a habit of implementing airships as optional side stuff instead of actually being part of the main story, as I saw in Type-0. Flying airships should ALWAYS be part of the main story in Final Fantasy. Always.

I know for a fact that flying airships was planned for Versus XIII, so I can't see why they didn't have it in the game as part of the main storyline. Granted, I would want it later in the game instead of sooner, but still. At least it IS in the game. We can look forward to future Final Fantasy games having flyable airships, I think. So, that's a welcome back for the series.

I will wait to play the game again after I can get the patch to complete the game 100%. I dunno how much I missed out on after all so I want the fullest experience I can get. I doubt it's going to completely change my overall outlook on the game, however.

That's a toss-up, but I can say the game is worth playing more than once.

I think Tabata needs to quit making FF titles. At the very least, get someone else to write the story of the games he makes because he is bad at it.

We do have Nomura to thank for the concept of this game and even the gameplay. However, I do not like him as a director. His best game is the original Kingdom Hearts and every KH game after that is a convoluted mess as far as story goes (even though I liked Namine in Chain of Memories). He has good ideas, but I think I would have found the story too convoluted and full of anime gimmicks had he stayed in the director's seat. Just throwing that out there as my two cents in regards to Nomura's directing abilities.

What I like about Tabata is that he listens to fans and takes feedback into serious account, hence why the overall gameplay is very solid. Hopefully criticism towards the plot gives him footing to tell better stories in the future. But to be clear, I didn't dislike the story as much as you did and wasn't as disappointed. Not perfect or even amazing, but I understand the frustration with waiting ten years and having THAT many years to tell a story should suffice to make an amazing tale.

I'll go more in depth with my own review.

I agree he's been making a mess of games for awhile, but KH2 and BBS were actually really good. Even 3D wasn't all that terrible if you get past the trippyness. He HAS actually had good games and good concepts. And it seems nearly of all the good things that came from this game, were from Nomura's ideas.

True, he does ask for fan feedback, but he ignored a very important bit of feedback --- how cool the story used to look and how everyone loved it and looked forward to it. I reviewed some of the old footage on Youtube the past few days and I didn't see a single cutscene that survived into the final product. And yes, I am frustrated. I was expecting at least a KH1 level story (which would have been an A). I would call it okay at best, but not good.

Posted December 8th, 2016 by Trever Leingod
Trever Leingod

Yeah, you have a point. I will say that this story is much better than Type-0 was (that story was shit).

Posted December 8th, 2016 by Laxan
Laxan

Right. It's not total garbage, I'll admit. Most of my annoyance stems from the fact there was so much wasted potential here. It wasn't like he used the original stuff and it still didn't pan out so good - he threw it out. There was no reason to do away with the ideas people knew and loved for 7+ years.

I will not give Tabata creds over Nomura in the gameplay department either. Nomura has had some great systems and bad systems, but he has typically leaned towards the good systems and even has been improving on them. Tabata also has some good systems, and it showed here, but I'd have to rate them as equals in that respect. It's just that Nomura has been better with stories and that's what the game's weakest point was here.

Posted December 8th, 2016 by Trever Leingod
Trever Leingod

We'll never know. But I do admit the dark, foreboding atmosphere had me intrigued back in 2006 and that kind of went out the window. I still have doubts Nomura would have done a great job at telling the story. KHII has a mess of a story and that's right after KHI. Tabata should have probably kept more of the initial ideas intact. But, really, a lot of it is till there. You're a prince who has a to get the crystal back to save his kingdom. There's an empire. Most of the original gameplay concepts are intact. It just wasn't executed the best, but I still enjoyed it. The thing they got most correct were the four main characters--and that is what was most important. I loved the gang and their characters were solid. I'm grateful they nailed that aspect of story/character.

All I'll say is this is Square's first attempt at an open world RPG and they did a damn good job overall. It puts Final Fantasy back on track to being a behemoth of a franchise and on the road to being the best once again. Admittedly, this was the game I was waiting for more than any other game of all-time but I also kept expectations realistic. I'm not disappointed largely and I hope this brings the series back to form. It's been very rough since FFX, and I think we're seeing the franchise gain momentum at long last.

Posted December 8th, 2016 by Laxan

I did enjoy it to some extent. It was not a horrible story. I might not be so disappointed if I hadn't grown up seeing scenes that were thrown out. But since I did see them and there seemed to be a very different feel from that version of the story that I wanted to see, I ended up not liking the new one so much. I am glad they made the characters so good - it was a key aspect of the game they did very well.

In a weird way, the open world was huge but it also felt like the world as a whole was small. That's a bit of a confusing opinion but some others might agree. But I would not call this a failing very much.

The game did not live up to my expectations, even the realistic ones. It may get game of the year, but it could have been the game of the decade. But it was good enough to leave me some hope for the franchise and I will say it deserves its brand name.

If gameplay and story are both Bs (or even Cs) I see really no point in getting it. I have been skeptical of it too. At least 13 was loosely similar to older installments but this just seems like square's take on an open world hack and slash.

I didn't like games like assassin's creed or devil may cry 4. Is it at all similar to them?

No, it's much better than that. My B+ rating for the battle system may have to do with the fact I was expecting more after seeing the demo. It may well deserve an A- without that. I would give 13 a C- overall. 13 brought shame to the FF series. Even with its failings, FF15 did not bring shame to the series, but rather brought the series some good. I will play FF15 again, but I will never even consider playing 13 again.

I didn't like games like assassin's creed or devil may cry 4. Is it at all similar to them?

I would say it is to some regards, like the big open world and somewhat the mission system, but I think it is more fun, more in depth and exciting.

Man, FUUUUUUCK the Castlemark Tower dungeon. We were level 75 and the hordes of enemies and crappy camera in tight spaces were giving us shit that is unacceptable in game design. It's strange because it is the worst designed dungeon in the entire game so far, and luckily it's optional (I've already completed the main story--the dungeons in that main plot function fine).

Still going to do a review after I complete all remaining dungeons and possibly hunts. I'll probably get started on the review once I finish all the dungeons.

If the camera is ruining the game for you, try another camera mode. It's not that bad, certainly not game-breaking.

But, omg, when you see Ardyn for the first time his hair was just horrible. I dunno if it's just me but the graphics were terrible.

WHAT. The graphics are great. I dunno if you just mean one scene or the whole game but I never noticed anything that bad.

Also if you beat the game already and you read my rant about the game feeling incomplete, read this (spoilers contained in the link by the way):
