You guys are being awfully quiet after it came out... How is it?

I got an email saying mine has been dispatched on Saturday but official release isn't until Wednesday so I'm not sure if I'll get it early or if it'll arrive on the day.

There are 93 Replies

Haven't actually gotten that far yet--I was busy most of the weekend, so I didn't have as many chances to play as I was expecting. Also, the blind Nuzlocke means I'm having to take it a bit slower than normal. I'm about halfway through the second island, I think? Hard to tell how far that exactly is since the gym system seems to be completely done away with.

That said, here are my initial impressions:

The graphics are obviously way better than previous games, and I especially like the little touches to the battles (e.g. you can actually see Trainers giving their Pokemon commands, and Pokemon react to opposing attacks). Also glad they brought back character customization options and the like. The trial system is a nice change of pace from the usual gym battles, and they feel sufficiently different to me. I didn't realize that the new Alola forms could also have different types--this cost me my Rattata when I didn't realize it was going to be weak to Bug attacks--which is pretty cool I guess.

That said, I'm finding the game a little tedious so far. I feel pretty railroaded into doing what the game wants me to do--I suppose that's true to some extent in all Pokemon games, but usually there's a point at which the game opens up and you can do things in whatever order you want. Also, it feels like there are an obnoxious amount of cutscenes, most of which are not very interesting or useful. I hear that the story is actually pretty good later on, though, so maybe those get better. Wild battles can be annoying as well--I thought it was cool when the bosses could call their minions to help, but it was a little less cool when random wild Pokemon started doing it, and downright frustrating when they do it multiple times in the same battle, without even costing them an attack or anything.

I hate that they reverted back to the Gen 5 system of experience. Level grinding was already the most annoying part of Pokemon games for me, so I don't see the point in making an already tedious experience take even longer. Z-Moves are a complete flop to me so far...I was so excited to see what a Z-Move Fake Out would do, only to find out it's pretty much the same generic powerful attack as everything else. The animations also take forever, so I may just wind up avoiding it the rest of the series.

The cutscenes are definitely way too frequent and drag on a tad bit. They game tries its best to hold your hand through the main objectives; a lot of areas are cut off with random excuses (Tauros guarding multiple paths, another Pokemon searching for items on the ground, etc.) I'm hoping the game starts to expand later on. Granted I'm not very far, but just some things I've noticed. My biggest complaint is the "Call for Help" feature. Battles become long and tedious when this happens; you aren't able to call out a second Pokemon, so you're battling against two at once. I can understand this feature for Totem battles, but out in the wild? Also, you can't catch Pokemon when there are two wild Pokemon out on the field at once. KO one Pokemon, get excited to throw a Pokeball, but they call for help at the end of that turn? Yeah, happens a lot.

Now for the good. There are a lot of mixed feelings about Z-moves, but I love them. You basically give the Pokemon the crystal to hold and the moves of that type are increased. The must be unlocked through trials or other means. While they usually only change any damaging move to their generic type (all Normal-type moves are turned into Breakdown Blitz), specific Pokemon DO get different Z-moves when paired with their crystal. Some Pokemon even have their own. And finally, Status effect moves are boosted when used as a Z-move. This works extremely well with my Cubone; I use Focus Energy as a Z-move so it not only increases crit chance but accuracy as well. Go ham with the boomerangs from then on out.

Battle animations look amazing. However, when there are more than two Pokemon on the field, my frame rate starts to suffer. Four on the field, and it starts to look a bit ugly. I am using the XL 3DS, though. I'm sure the slowdown is nowhere as bad on the newer models.

Overall, I love the game. Alola Pokemon are an amazing throwback that are not just a money grab for nostalgia. Just a tip: Alola Grimer is a beast.

Even with the small cons, the game is definitely worth the ranging 9 out of 10's.

I'm not sure I understand. I haven't played every Pokemon gen, but my experience with Pokemon has always been that they force you down their path right up until you unlock the "post-league" content at which point you're then left to do whatever you wish.

Like Gen 2, they essentially just send you after all the gyms until the Team Rocket story gets in the way, but even then they prevent you from progressing further by having gym leaders and areas inaccessible until you resolve the Team Rocket stuff. Then after you have defeated the league (elite 4) they allow you to do stuff in a much more open-world way. Kanto is pretty much entirely open for you to do in whatever order you want (aside from a couple of places that I think it still forced you to do stuff).

So yea, I can't think of any Pokemon game that let you really do stuff in your own order until you defeat the league.

I hate that they reverted back to the Gen 5 system of experience.

I didn't play Gen 5 so could you explain what this means... I guess I'll find out when my copy arrives but still.

From everything I've seen in the trailers and stuff they seem very OP, to the point that I might just never use them.

I also noticed how obnoxiously long the animations are!

probably didn't help that the site went down around the same time :J

mine came in yesterday (even earlier than my earlier-than-the-delivery-estimate guess!) - my brother took Sun and I've got Moon. I'm not far at all so there's a lot I can't speak to yet (haven't even seen "calling for help" yet, just came across aggressive wild Pokémon for the first time). What I can say is I'm glad that they didn't hold out on the trainer customization, but a big ol' middle finger to whoever designed the hair salon. You get charged upfront to even look at the cut/color options, and I didn't see any way to preview the results. Save game, spend $4000 on a haircut (criminal) based on a brief description only to find out you don't like it, reload. At least you have plenty of cash early on to assemble a sweet outfit.

currently with me:
  • Popplio (female starter let's gooooo)
  • Pikipek (nice nature, rad ability, early Rock Smash, yes please)
  • Munchlax (probably temporary but hell yeah)
  • Pichu (filler, because Pichu)
  • Gastly (filler, because Hypnosis)
  • Alola Meowth (filler, because Pickup)

What I can say is I'm glad that they didn't hold out on the trainer customization, but a big ol' middle finger to whoever designed the hair salon.

THIS. Pshh. At least the clothes have a huge variety of options. Hair cutting is a vague, expensive process.

    Anyways, about the "railroading" issue:

In other games, you did have paths blocked off along a linear route. In this game, you must follow the objectives spilled out for you each and every single time. Parts of towns are always closed off; you have to watch a longish cut scene or two/complete an objective beforehand. Other games obviously have the same formula, but mixing the frequency that they occur now with the long cut scenes just feels like filler pacing. Some of them are completely unnecessary.

Gen V and onward gives you EXP based on the difference between your Pokemon and the opponent. If you're way higher in level, you won't get nearly as much EXP. Previous games, every defeated Pokemon gave base EXP. A lot of people don't like it, but I find it gave me a reason to keep my party stabilized more than ever. Throw out a lower leveled Pokemon and defeat higher levels for YUGE EXP.

    Also, my current team :3

Alola Marowak (definitely not the best Ghost/Fire out there, but mannn he looks sweeeeet)

Charjabug (I love this guy. Hits like a truck; very surprised. Neat typing, too)

Alola Grimer (my lord. This new form is a menace. Never in my life did I think I would like Grimer..)

Dartrix (My Chemical Romance, meet Pokemon.)

Carbink (the funnest tank I've ever had, period. Give it Leftovers, use Reflect or Light Screen, and slowly take out everything while finishing with close to full health.)

    Slowpoke (idk man.)

Ah ok so it's not just that they still tell you where to go for most of the game, it's that they do it in a much more forceful way AND throw in lots of annoying cutscenes?

    Exactly.

It isn't game breaking, but I would be lying if I said it wasn't annoying.

Need someone to tuck you in?

Yeah, Axem covered what I meant pretty well. Thinking about it, X/Y was probably about as linear as this game, but it wasn't nearly as annoying about it. Most of the other Pokemon games at least give you options on the order in which you did some things (Kanto being the most open about it), but that's not really the case here...and the reasons why you can't go off the main path seem a lot more arbitrary. The Rotom Dex constantly reminding me of where to go--generally right after someone tells me where to go--is reminding me a bit of Navi, though thankfully it's not audible.

I believe this system was actually removed for X/Y and ORAS, which is why I was disappointed when it came back for this gen. My personal view is that it's already harder to level up stronger Pokemon simply because they take more experience to level up, so the scaled experience seems unnecessary.

Re: the hair salon, it seems like they tried to make the different styles/colors sound "fancy," but it came at the expense of actually being descriptive. I also found I didn't like about half of the styles I tried, which meant I had to pay for it again.

    My current team:

Dartrix (Liked the design better as Rowlet...also, I keep expecting it to be quicker since it's a bird)

Hariyama (Surprisingly, I think this is the first time I've used one. Nice little beater)

Fearow (Consequence of the Nuzlocke rules)

Herdier (Same, although the Intimidate is nice)

Mudbray (I love this thing. Hits way harder than I ever expected, though I'm not sure why this horse is so slow)

Poliwag (Newest member of my party...I'm a bit disappointed it doesn't have a sweet new form. Also an absolute pain to catch thanks to the "Call for Help" feature)

I've been playing on a launch-day 3DS while my brother uses the XL, and don't have any complaints. If I get a chance later, I could try running both games side by side for the sake of comparison.

Using an original XL. The only time slowdown is noticeable is when there are more than 2 Pokemon on the field, or when using the "PokeSnap" feature. 4 Pokemon on the field looks.. bad.

I'm almost done with the second island; I'm liking the game a lot more now. I found a water stone on a route; perhaps they are scattered around? You have to eventually be able to buy them.

I switched Marowak for Salandit and my Charjabug for Dewpider. So far, they're doing some work. Really suggest Salandit for the grass trial.

needed to train my new grassbaby after catching her, so I decided to start by fishing in the woods where it can actually win fights and gain desirable EVs. There's also a 1% chance of Feebas encounters there (for that one jerk of a researcher who asks to see its pokedex entry) - and I managed to catch one in less time than I would've expected.

love it when a plan comes together

I made it to Route Eevee so now I can build the team I actually want and ditch these horrible non-Eeveelution pokemon!

Also PN you said you had Moon right? I have Sun but I want blue clothes but the colours are version exclusive (ffs why is this even a thing!). I read that you can get colours from the opposite version somehow by playing in the festival plaza with a player from the other version or something... So I may need to borrow you at some time...

oh dang, didn't even realize I'd passed Eevee since I wasn't specifically looking for one.

I just reached the third island with:

  • L28 Steenee (so close...)
  • L29 Salandit (not dead-set on using, but neat)
  • L29 Pikipek (almost there, can't wait to have reasonable defense stats)
  • L30 Popplio (holding strong)

    also present:
  • L31 Snorlax - my big son is a hero who tanks hits and helps fatten my wallet with Happy Hour and an Amulet Coin. Probably will let him rest in the PC eventually, but at the very least I need to see his Z-Move in person

  • L19 Meowth - lol Pickup

Also PN you said you had Moon right? I have Sun but I want blue clothes but the colours are version exclusive (ffs why is this even a thing!).

I didn't know it was supposed to be a thing, but I had a feeling once I noticed that stores always seem to have the same general array of hues (green/blue/navy/purple/gray/black/white), which is notably devoid of warm colors. The "hey, I like your outfit" function of the Festival Plaza certainly makes more sense, knowing that.

I read that you can get colours from the opposite version somehow by playing in the festival plaza with a player from the other version or something... So I may need to borrow you at some time...
probably that thing I just mentioned, which I just unlocked recently by levelling up the plaza. I haven't tried it, but I think it allows you to place an order for any article of clothing that a plaza visitor is wearing.

another thing that might help is using a dye shop - if there's one in your plaza, you can have them dye white clothing a bunch of other colors.

unfortunately, I don't think I can help you with the first option unless you're playing as a girl. But not everyone can look as cute as me in blue and white:

  • Posted November 24th, 2016 by Pirate_Ninja
    Pirate_Ninja

I'll look into it further. My plaza currently has red and green dye places, any idea how to change those? I haven't really bothered with this feature yet aside form the initial tutorial.

Also since when did breeding pokemon give the egg/baby one of the parent's pokeball types? I caught one Eevee in a pokeball and the other in a greatball and half of their kids come out in greatballs.

Posted November 25th, 2016 by Moonray

The dye shop I have offers pastel blue, but the "dye with berries" option results in a whole range of other colors - did you check that?

I know that you get a random new shop offer to move in when you level up and talk to the guide, but the better way is probably with the "can you recommend a favorite stall?" conversation option that unlocks at some point. Not sure how it works, but you can ask visitors and they'll suggest something they have, which I'm sure is more reliable (though you'll have to pay for it to move in).

no clue on the ball type thing, but since I don't remember seeing it maybe it's new? Haven't bred anything yet this gen but I know I did last time.

I agree so much about the "railroaded" thing. It's kinda preventing me from enjoying the game very much.

Posted November 25th, 2016 by Furtive

The railroading feels less bad the further I get in the game. Perhaps I am just getting used to it more? It definitely made this game harder to get into.

Thanks for the info PN, I'll try it out some time.

@SOH. All 700+ aren't available at any point in the game. You'll never find a pokémon game with every pokémon available in it anymore. There's just far too many to make it happen. That said you can always trade them in from other games when Pokemon bank goes live for this gen.

The Ghost trail was a pain at first :/ if Umbreon can take a few hits, he should be good to go. The totem is VERY fast; always expect to go 2nd. I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll leave it at that. I wish I could run into Umbreon/Espeon I don't have the patience to raise Eevee with friendship.

I initially loved my Grimer, but now he's really slacking. Too slow in general, has some defenses but still lacking, and only a subpar Attack. I'm waiting until 37 to see if I want to keep him around. Sucks, because I was very excited to have him so early

I've used some of it, parts of it are worth checking out:

(islands beyond the first can be unlocked by spending beans, shouldn't take long to get going)

  • the starting island supplies beans and can recruit random wild pokemon visitors for you without you needing to do anything more than poking them to say hi. You can pick up a pretty good number of beans every day as you upgrade it, just poke the beanstalk and kinda scribble over the island to grab them (easier than poking them individually).

  • an island where you can plant/grow berries

  • an island where your PC pogeys go on adventures to find treasure for you (free evolution stones and stuff)

  • an island for hands-off EV and experience training

  • an island for raising happiness and (slowly) incubating eggs without having to carry them around

as far as I know Vulpix and Sandshrew are in the same spots - if you fly to Tapu Village and head west a little to where there's a grassy bend in the road, that's where I caught it. Rainy area with stuff like Pelipper and Snorunt around, not super common but it only took a couple minutes to find it*. I think the destroyed bargain shop is just to the south of there based on NPC dialogue, but I haven't actually gone any further than that yet.

and I don't need a Vulpix for it - it'd be nice, but I was more looking to get you the Sandshrew since you said you wanted it. Hope it's a good happy birthday weekend either way c:

*full disclosure: the first Sandshrew I found, my brain autopiloted "okay Sandshrew is ground, so non-STAB Brick Break should weaken and not kill it"...and then I felt real dumb because it's Alola Sandshrew and ice/steel gets demolished by fighting, gg back to searching. I found Vulpix! I'll catch a few more if others want some as well.

Yeah.. Ghost Trial is rough. I suggest using Toxic and getting your tankiest members out first. The Totem with boosts stats will basically ALWAYS go first. If they can't OHKO, their ally sure as hell will. I had to cheese it with Toxic, but a win is a win. Love my tanks

Finished my blind Nuzlocke on Saturday. I do have to say, I agree that the cutscenes got less annoying as they went--I wasn't really enjoying the game for the first half or so, but either I got used to it, they were less frequent, or they were more interesting later on. Still not in any hurry to replay the game just yet, but it's better than my original impression. I continue not to be a fan of Z-Moves, though, or a few of the features such as "call for help." It was also a little weird that they changed the healing items, since they've been the same since Gen 1--that confused me for a bit because I'd assumed they'd remained unchanged.

There may be some minor mid-late game spoilers below...nothing hugely plot-related, though.

The Nuzlocke itself went pretty well...most of my issues came from me not knowing new Pokemon/Alolan form types (notably losing my Crobat to Hala's Crabominable, as I had no idea it was Ice-type). I was finding the game excruciatingly easy with the Exp Share, so I turned it off partway through and things got at least a little challenging. Only major hiccup was when my Decidueye got one-shotted by some fish thing that I didn't expect to have Crunch, and I shortly lost three more Pokemon (Fearow, Stoutland, and Poliwrath) to the third battle with Guzma when its Masquerain was faster (out-speeding my higher-level Fearow!) and hit harder than I ever would have expected. Besides that, it was mostly smooth sailing with only a few hiccups until the end of the game, where I tackled the E4 with the following team:

Crobat (As mentioned above, OHKOed by Hala's Crabominable. Pretty solid throughout the campaign, though)
    w/Scope Lens
    Cross Poison
    Aerial Ace
Leech Life (huge buff in this generation)
    Confuse Ray

Tentacruel (Caught it back-to-back with Zubat, which made me groan. Really nifty moveset, though, and good vs. special attacks. My first survivor of the challenge)
    w/Expert Belt
    Sludge Wave
    Scald
    Acid Spray
    Ice Beam

Alolan Marowak (Looks sweet, but easily the weakest member of my team--its stats aren't great and it was weak to so many different types. Did nothing in the E4 and was OHKOed immediately by the Champion)
    w/Amulet Coin
    Flame Charge
    Shadow Bone
    Stomping Tantrum
    Flare Blitz

Mudsdale (My heavy-hitter...unfortunately done-in by a crit Brave Bird from Braviary in the Champion battle)
    w/Soft Sand
    Earthquake
    Low Sweep
    Heavy Slam
    Bulldoze

Hariyama (My go-to switch-in and tank, and the only Pokemon I used Z-power with for most of the playthrough--usually with Bulk Up. Easily the E4 MVP, and another survivor. It and Mudsdale were the two members of my team that survived the Guzma massacre)
    w/Fightinium Z
    Fake Out
    Brick Break
    Bulk Up
    Knock Off

Comfey (Surprisingly solid tank itself, though with a lot less HP. Would have been better if I hadn't thought Floral Healing could heal itself--I deleted Synthesis for it. My third survivor)
    w/Miracle Seed
    Dazzling Gleam
    Calm Mind
    Petal Dance
    Light Screen

I'm with Ceta. I'm not actually enjoying it as much now. Maybe I'll look for different Pokémon for my team. Not really pleased with Toucannon or Torracat. I'm only on the second island.

@Cas I agree with white lancer and the others who have said it gets better as you go on (either because the game improves or you get used to it -- I'm not really sure myself).

I do think part of it is just getting used to it, because the game still feels like it's directing me a lot (although they did let me go through a whole route on the third island without stopping to chat to Lillie or Hau or someone else).

But I do also think the story and cutscenes are becoming a more interesting. Early on it's just a lot of "wow you're so awesome, now head over there so I can tell you where to go next instead of just telling you right now" but now it feels more like actual stuff is happening.

Also I am just completely ignoring Z-Moves and tbh I am glad I am. I feel like this game has a nice level of challenge as it is and that it'd be too easy if I was using Z-Moves.

@Ceta and @Moonray: I'll give it a shot again. I think I was focusing way too much on catching all of the Pokémon where ever I went. I've been using Poke Refresh and other things a lot too.

About to take the ghost trial - hoping Muk can deal with the totem.

I would say yes. The games look quite different, as Castrael mentioned, and for Sun & Moon they changed up the formula a bit, as there are no gyms anymore. However, the main idea is still the same. I'd suggest playing XY first, but it isn't a must (though they are good games).

I haven't played any games since Diamond and I'm loving it now. Some games cash in on their nostalgia; this is not one of the cases.

Honestly I would just say skip XY. I found them so boring & short. ORAS was good though.

Sun & Moon are the best of the ones in the new 3D engine.

I'd rank the 3DS games as X/Y > Sun/Moon > ORAS. It's hard to put my finger on why, but X/Y was the first Pokemon game I was interested in replaying shortly after my first playthrough since FireRed/Leaf Green. Something about the game just made it play smoothly for me. ORAS left me a little bit cold, in the same way that HG/SS did--I think the remakes just haven't changed enough from the original game to really get me excited, with FR/LG being the exception only because the original games were in such dire need of an update.

So I beat the ghost totem with my Sylveon using moon blast!

For anyone who has beaten it, did you notice the Mimikyu in the background during the conversation with the trial captain at the end? Was a nice little touch, not sure how long he was there as I only noticed him right at the end of the conversation.

did you notice the Mimikyu in the background during the conversation with the trial captain at the end?

I did at the very last second, and got a little spooked for a moment haha. I even tried to find a video of it happening (because I wasn't sure if the dialogue before it had any impact as well), but I gave up after a few minutes.

I've found a video and he's only there at the very end. Right after the trial captain has been laughing at your version of events and then she's all "Brr, I feel a chill going down my spine for some reason." walks off and as she goes off the screen you see it in the background walking off behind the store.

I'm really enjoying the trials. The idea of having boss pokemon (totem pokemon) who get stat boosts was a great idea.

I see what it was implying now! Found a video just now.

When your character turns to look at the Megamart, it's implied that he/she is telling the captain what took place for the totem trial: that you were lured into the back room of the store, that your PokeFinder started up on its own, etc. The captain playfully laughs it off, saying that there is no back room to the store. There's a pause, and her smile fades. Whether she believes you or feels the presence of Mimikyu in the background is debatable, I guess. But sure enough, upon returning to the back of the store.. there is no back room there after all.

^For those curious about the dialogue after the Ghost Trial

anyone use Wonder Trade at all?

I do one a day, super glad they brought the option back. I mean, you tend to get crappy stuff out of it, but it's still a fun little surprise imo and there's always a chance for something cool. I got a Staryu from one, which I hadn't caught for myself. And I think you can get some FC from doing it as well, which is nice.

at first, I would just pick any ol' random capture, give it a ridiculous nickname, teach it a TM or two, and send it on its way (Day 1 was a Pichu named macaroni). For the past several days, though, I've been sending out Feebas.

Pokemon Bank won't work with Sun/Moon until next year (I think January) so we can't say with 100% certainty right now...

But as far as I know it will work just as it has with X/Y and ORAS. You can stick anything you want into the bank, but you can only withdraw into games where those Pokemon/moves exist.

If you've never used it before, it's basically a separate app on the 3DS which will read the save data of any Pokemon game it detects (either downloaded or cartridge) and then ask you which game you want to manage. Then it lets you move pokemon from the PC into the Bank (or vice versa). Then you just disconnect, select the other game's save file and do the same there. I believe held items can't be moved, so you can't use it to get specific items out of one game and into another). Eggs cannot be transferred either.

just go to the plaza, hit the Trade button, and it's one of the choices listed. I think you can only trade from your PC, though, so make sure you're not carrying whatever you want to send.

nah it's cool, still holding on to it whenever you're available

Also.. where the hell you finding them Feebas'???
found one the hard way (posted about it above when it happened), and once I was able to catch a Ditto I paired them up in daycare together. Whenever I have an open spot, I pick up another egg to go adventuring with. If you'd like one, I can pass one of them along as well.

that offer extends to anybody else who might want an unpopular, hard-to-find little fish, too c:

I definitely passed over It. Usually I like hunting down my own Pokes, but.. 1% rarity for a Poke I won't even used, evolved or not? Shoooooo. PLEASE.

haha, sure. I wasn't really looking for it (more of an "it would be cool if he showed up while I beat up these Magikarp and Goldeen"), but I think I spent about twice as long trying to find even a single Oranguru.

also, for anyone further ahead than me, did you guys check Guzma's "throne" after the Po Town showdown? That cracked me up; I love little details like that.

if you didn't: you sit down in it, and a grunt immediately runs in to talk to the boss. Confused, he says something along the lines of "Yo, what the heck? You're not the boss of me!" and runs off. Checking it a second time just has you sit down and comment on the state of the chair (it's seen a lot of angry fist-pounding)

Bit disappointed that the third island's kahuna was kinda just thrown at you as a secondary thought in the middle of the other storyline... It's not a big deal but it's your final battle in the island challenge and it's so unceremoniously done.

wasn't making much in the way of progress lately, between checking out FFXV and doing non-progress-related stuff when I did play. But I just made it to the fourth island, and WHOA WTF WHY ARE WILD POKEMON SUDDENLY A HIGHER LEVEL THAN ME

Okay, so I can FINALLY answer this haha. Sorry, I legit didn't have a chance to play until this week, so I know I'm late, but to answer your question: Mustard (Muk) did well. He was the only one I used in the whole fight (Sandygast and Decidueye were the backup muscle). That being said, I did use a hyper potion and he did get back into the red before fainting the last ally, but it ended up being not that much trouble. Perhaps the evolution made the difference.
