Mass Effect

Flammable! Or, inflammable? Forget which. Doesn't matter!
Anyone interested in a Mass Effect Trilogy forum playthrough?
Posted: Posted November 12th, 2016 by Orion Nebula

So I was thinking: with the Mass Effect trilogy now backwards compatible on Xbox, and Andromeda on the horizon, how about another forum playthrough of the series?

I really enjoyed the discussions we had when I hosted one a couple years back, although we never got around to ME3 for a multitude of reasons. I did section off the series in parts, so we could focus on all the missions and story beats individually, however that did become increasingly hard once we reached ME2 and paths began to branch. If we did go ahead with this one, do you think a megathread for each game would be sufficient (with spoiler tags for the newbies), or would splitting them up into a handful of parts (say, 3-5) be preferable? Here's an example of what it looked like last time:

Just gauging interest. I've also had a bit to drink and been listening to the Mass Effect OSTs while reading up on Andromeda, so I'm in that kind of mood.

I love the first two games. I will play them until the day I die. But Mass Effect 3 is painfully laggy with load tines, has repetitive uninteresting enemies, and the constant deaths of allies and horrible ending are all really depressing. I feel like I would crash and burn when I got there. Especially since ME1 and 2 are so damn long to begin with. I think maybe I could return to 3 in like April after I beat Andromeda. 3 did a lot of things right too. The dlc was on point and I love the citadel and the mini games and arena. Just maybe it's too soon to play it again.

ME3, on the ship, is awful. I hate the screening load thing to go between different parts of the ship. I was really hoping a remaster would end that.

I don't recall load times being much of an issue in ME3. The only noticeable one was what you mentioned - the screening door near the war room. And I'd argue ME3 has the most diverse enemies in the entire trilogy (actually, I don't think it's much of an argument - it definitely does).

constant deaths of allies

I thought the mandatory deaths were all handled gracefully (Legion, Thane, Mordin all had beautifully written endings). And I dunno, I was quite frustrated with ME3's original ending at the time, but the Extended Cut softened the blow, and I've always loved the rest of the game leading up to it. So I made peace with it pretty quickly. Definitely of the opinion that the outcry over the ending was grossly exaggerated by many people.

I agree though, it did have some fantastic DLC. Citadel, Omega, Leviathan, Javik... always got bang for buck.

I should have my 360 up and running by tomorrow, as I've moved house. I need to get two last achievements on ME1, and I haven't played the campaign for at least a year and a half now, so due another last playthrough before Andromeda.

What do you want us to do as part of the playthrough?

Okay, I will clarify. The Cerberus levels have repetitive uninteresting enemies. They drag on and on too and it irked me that the illusive man couldn't be reasoned with when he seemed like a sensible levelheaded guy in ME2.

Having Genesis 2 makes ME3 attractive though. Allows me to escape playing the first two and still keep most options. On its own it's an alright game. Just a bit of an anticlimax after ME2.

I really like traynor and wanted to romance her. Her accent is so sexy.

I am not sure how much time I could commit, for various reasons, but I think I could be down for a playthrough.

Oh nothing specific, just play the game however you like and talk about it here.

Probably wouldn't start it until December though, as I'm a bit busy at the moment.

Might join in, not sure right now. I kinda wanted to avoid playing ME to keep the new game as fresh as possible.

I've actually thought about how nice it would be to make another play-through of the ME Trilogy since the last time I did was late 2012 or early 2013. I just don't have the time with work, college classes, family and current game library that I still have yet to play through.

Sometimes I miss the days when I had more time to play video games.

I actually did start playing through 3. And the load times are a bit too much but it's a pretty good game. I don't have time to go through the entire trilogy right now.

I'd have to start all over. a few years ago the HDD in my 360 died and I had to replace it so I lost all of my saves including the ones from my 2 or 3 playthroughs of the ME trilogy. I'm still kind of sore about that.

I used the Genesis 2 tool to give myself a perfect start in ME3.

Can you get the best play-through using that? i mean can you get the Geth and the Quarians to both align with you?

Getting them both to make peace and ally with you isn't difficult anyway.

But I believe there are save game editors for all 3 games that let you change variables from the choices & more (of course doing so can cause bugs). I'm pretty sure there's even youtube videos out there that show you some of the weird things you can do (like the ones for ME2 that show the extra dialogue companions have if you unlock them earlier than you're supposed to, which seems to imply they were all going to be unlockable at the start or something).

Well Jack and Miranda both like me so I am guessing it's the same with Tali and Legion.

Maybe on PC but on XBOX360 there aren't any that I am aware of.

I don't think it's that easy. On my first play through of the ME trilogy I was good with both tali and Legion but I couldn't get them both to ally with me. My second time through I was able to.

Here is a guide i found online:

In order to achieve peace between the two races, you need to get 5 to 7 points. These points are based on your ME2 and ME3 decisions. If you have 4 points or below, you cannot achieve peace.

-Rewrote the Heretics (0 points)

-Destroyed the Heretics (+2 points)

-Tali is NOT exiled (+2 points)

-Tali has been exiled/You did not do the Loyalty Mission (0 points)

-Resolved Legion/Tali conflict either using the Paragon or Renegade options (+1 point)

-N7 Mission: Save the Admiral on Rannoch in ME3 (+1 point)

-N7 Mission: Destroy Geth Squadron on Rannoch in ME3 (+1 point)

-Completed Legion's Mission in ME3 (or no peace)

Maybe Red Leaf is playing on PC so he could use a save editor. but like you said it could create bugs.

I mainly used them to create specific starts for ME2 and ME3 so that I could experiment with the choices quicker and it worked fine. But I've seen bugs caused by them, it's usually minor like say you edit it so that both outcomes for a "this or that" choice are true, characters will use both sides of dialogue so the conversation flows really weirdly.

Funnily enough that's also what happens if you take a character in ME1 to parts of the game where your companions will offer differing opinions. If you make it so that you only have one companion with you, they'll use their dialogue for both sides of the argument and it some cases it looks like they have a split personality because they'll look like they are responding to themselves :P

It's definitely quite amusing to mess around with on a save file you don't intend to reuse.

I've been playing through ME1 again. I'm about 8 hours in. I can start streaming it if people are interested in watching. Since I've never finished a game in the series and all, and you guys have played through the entire series how many times I don't know.

Yeah, let's just do a web series wherein all of us just backseat drive your playthrough of the trilogy!

That said, I will probably pick up ME1 again after I make it through Arkham Knight. I have Dark Souls III waiting in the wings, but I think I'll want something to wash the palette clean of 2016 before moving onto that.

I don't cater to your bizarre foreign schedule, Moonray.

That said I will stream when I play next. Maybe tonight but I've got some studying to do for a test on Monday. It's been a bit of a struggle so far because I've already played up to this point about three times but I am close to getting into new territory. I do feel like I am having an easier time with combat this time around since I chose Soldier class opposed to my experience with Infiltrator class before.
