Omae wa mou shindeiru!

Remember this anime so I don't have to!

Okay, so I don't know anything about anime. Despite the inclinations of some of my best friends and my seemingly never-ending obsession with Japanese video games I simply have never taken the plunge into this realm, and as of right now I have no intention to. Nevertheless, there were a few I caught on the Saturday morning/weekday cartoon circuit back in that horrifyingly distant era of the mid to late 1990s. These included all of what I assume are the usual suspects: Pokemon, some iteration of Dragon Ball, and, yes, even Sailor Moon... Anyone with a younger sister knows that sometimes even they got to choose the show! But there is one more, and for the life of me I can't place it.

It was a science fiction show. I certainly remember spacecrafts but can't recall whether or not there were also giant robots, and I only speculate on that because it's anime. In any case it wasn't a very long show, as I watched through it several times, repeating on network television (I never had cable) only to eventually get bored by the lack of progression and give up. Despite the time slot it seemed to be aimed at a slightly older audience because I had some difficulty understanding what was going on, though it still managed to capture my interest due to an already well established love of Star Trek.

What I remember most vividly is a build up of tension over the course of the "season" (which may have been no longer than a few episodes) before concluding on a cliffhanger with a fleet of starships hovering over earth threatening with invasion. And as far as I knew there was never any televised continuation of that story.

What's unreal to me is that I can't seem to figure out what it was. With the internet at my disposal and all of my half remembered details there doesn't seem to be anything that looks quite right, and it seems I am faced with the daunting task of sifting through endless examples of Japan-only or VHS exclusive localized anime when all I want is to find information on one of a presumably small collection of Japanese shows that managed to make it to American network television in the 1990s.

It's at this point I realized that my best bet would be to try and figure it out with people who may very well have seen the same show at some point. Once with my buddies we managed to pinpoint a relatively obscure superhero cartoon we'd somehow all managed to see (and then forget) by using this method:

So there's that. I hope to do the same with this, except I thought I might have better luck tapping into the stronger knowledge base of some of gtx0's more dedicated anime fans. With that said, does the show I have attempted to describe exist or did I somehow manage to dream up the entire thing?

guess we can rule out gundam.

If only I could! Local networks are all I had, so there was FOX, NBC, ABC, CBS, The WB, UPN, and CBC. I pretty much never bothered with the Canadian channel though.

Well lets rule out ABC, NBC and CBS. They never showed anime until the early 2000's and that was limited to a key selection.

My money is on Upn, The WB, and Fox.

can you elaborate on the animation?/ how it looked visually?

was their multiple main characters or just one?

Thats all I can scrounge up. I dont remember many japanese anime on those networks. The biggest ones were pokemon, yugioh and digimon from what I can remember

unless its astroboy or big guy and rusty.

Good to know!

It's mostly a blur, but I would say it tended more towards realism. I'm pretty sure there wasn't anyone with pink hair for instance. Of the examples you gave I would say it looked most similar to Invasion Earth, though for the life of me the spark of recognition just isn't there from what I've seen of it so far.

was their multiple main characters or just one?

Definitely multiple.

Thanks for the info so far! By focusing on the networks you mentioned I just may be able to figure it out.

Oh God, could this have been it?

It's from 1992, and on UPN. That's an earlier vintage than I had initially guessed but given how little I remember it could very well have been from that long ago. The intro theme sounds familiar, and despite the robot suit it totally has the right look.

I feel like this isn't it because you'd probably remember the robots, but for the potential for memory-jogging, was it ExoSquad? I know that one ends on a cliffhanger with some aliens appearing to prepare an invasion of the solar system.

Ah, Teknoman sounds like that could be it too, from the sound of it.
