Color Splash question

How does the battle gameplay system go?

Do you have a finite number of cards or something just to be able to use a Jump or Hammer (like in Sticker Star), or is the cards and/or paint like an FP thing, but still with the ability to jump or hammer even if you're out?

If the former, then Nintendo has really lost it on their Paper Mario games, and I'll only say this one is canon because I've seen the ending and I think Bowser actually dies there, to conclude the kinda-cliffhanger in Paper Jam. (I've decided to refuse to acknowledge Sticker Star as canon)
