What is your all time favorite strategy game?

For me, I think it has to be Civ V. I've played Beyond Earth quite a bit and while I do enjoy it, it does seem to be a little bit repetitive after a little while. However, I am also a really big fan of Rome II for completely different reasons. With Civ V I feel like I'm constantly fighting against an overpowered AI in order to survive and have to be extremely strategic in the technologies I research and keeping a balance between my civil developments and my military. With Rome II I feel a little bit more involved in internal politics and I get to control how my units go into battle. I do enjoy Starcraft as well, as it defined the sci-fi strategy games for a long time, and C&C was my childhood.

What about you? Which strategy games do you prefer? What makes them special for you? And do you have a preference between 4X and RTS games or do you enjoy both?

Wait, so you don't have it anymore? If you bought it on steam it will forever be in your steam library and if it's not you should lodge a complaint. I'm pretty sure you have to download the whole game if you want to play it.

I bought it in disc form a long time ago. I've lost the disc and don't have a disc drive either.

my laptop is very low on memor and I'm not sure if I could download it to an SD card.

I'm sure if you had a big enough one you could. Have you considered getting an external hard drive?

I think it's big enough it's a 32gb and the download size is 12 with all the expansions

I say go for it. Idk exactly how you'd go about it though.

I have only played Warcraft 2 and 3. And I used to play a game called Real War that was pretty fun but it was too hard for me to ever finish.

Warcraft 3 is my favorite, though. I hope Blizzard make another RTS some day.

Can't go wrong with a classic like Risk.

The early Warcraft series is great too.

Dawn of War: Dark Crusade or C&C: Tiberian Sun

Tiberium sun frustrated me. It was so damn hard. What made it particularly appealing to you Dooku?

Yeah it could definitely be punishing. I learned pretty fast to never complete an objective without a decent sized army ready to deal with the inevitable counter attack when the map expanded. But I enjoyed the challenge.

The game's 'world' also kinda just clicked for me. Despite the isometric graphics, you could infer a lot of information from the environment. Made the game very atmospheric, as it felt like you were waging war on a dilapidated, mutated, dying Earth. Add some memorable characters in cheesy FMV scenes and it just made for a great game.

Need someone to tuck you in?

Tough to pick... I could easily make a list of favourites:

C&C Tiberian Sun
Dawn of War: Dark Crusade
Star Wars: Empire at War
Supreme Commander
Sins of a Solar Empire
Battlezone 2
Battleforge
Universe at War

I think out of them all I liked the concept of Battleforge the most, but Sins or Supreme Commander are my favourites.

And this is just favourites, there's others that I rate highly.

Do you ever play any total war games Moonray? They're like a mix between 4X and RTS

I tried Rome II (I think it was?) But didn't really enjoy it so I've given them a miss for now.

Was thinking of trying the fantasy warhammer one though.

Tolkien nerd here, so The Battle for Middle-earth and Battle for Middle-earth II kept me occupied for years on end.

I've heard the Warhammer one is really good, I haven't had a chance to try it yet though.

OMFG how did I forget about those. Yes, those are definitely on my list of favourites too :D

Should really dig the discs out and get them reinstalled (never understood why they haven't had a digital release on steam of origin, maybe some kind of licence thing).

Yeah, it's hard to find any EA-distributed Lord of the Rings games anywhere after licensing passed to WB around 2010. I still have BFME2 on disc, but I gave away the first one to a friend years ago, so I'd love to see it somehow end up on Steam as well.

They're the kind of games I'd actually be keen on streaming.

I've been considering streaming my total war campaign, I might do so tonight if I can figure out how to get it set up.
