What games you wanna buy for the rest of the year and how big is your backlog?
Posted: Posted March 4th
Edited March 4th by ShadowFox08

I have about maybe 10 incomplete games on switch, but I only care about beating Let's Go Eevee, Doom, Dark Souls, Octopath Traveler (haven't even opened), and DB Xenoverse 2. I'm really trying to not buy any games until July and beat one game per month at least, which is doable until July.

Games I'm going to buy for sure:
-Dragon Quest Builders 2. Loved the first one. Hope framerate is stable.July 19
-Links Awakening Q4 2019

Really interested On my radar (may or may not buy based on reviews and if I have the time):
-Final Fantasy XII Zodiac Age April
-FF X/X2 April
-Daemon X Machina Q3
-Astral Chain August
-Dragon Quest 11 Q4

I'll see (if I have the time after above)
RE 0,1,4 May
Fire Emblem 3 Houses Jul

Truth be told there's a ton of games I'm interested in, but sadly I will only have so much time and will probably end up getting 4-5 if I'm lucky. Doesn't help majority are RPGs which are the most time wasting and longest.I've never played a FF game before and want to play at least one. https://www.releases.com/l/Switch_Games/2019/Q1/

What's crazy is that I've never bought so many games for any console in a 2 year life span. I own 21 games already, including 4 f2p games at least.

Posted March 4th by ShadowFox08

Honestly, I don't really keep an eye on the news, so I only know a handful of games that are coming out. I've got some stuff on my wishlist on Steam, so I can pick it up when it goes on sale, though. Probably shouldn't since I've got, like, 70 steam games, and I've only played about 10-15 of them. It's a problem I have. Picked up about 10 360 games a few years ago, and I've only played 3-4 of them. Picked up 4 3DS games and I've only played one of them. Six Wii U games, and I've only played one of them. There needs to be more hours in a day. Someone invent time dilation technology, already.

I...would not start with the ones you mentioned. If you want to use the Switch in particular, I'd sooner consider 7 or 9 (9 is out, 7 will be soon, idk if any of the other good ones have been ported to it),

Final Fantasy 9 would probably be the best one to start with as it has more of a classic Final Fantasy design, not to mention superb story with excellent writing.

I am looking forward to FF10/10-2 and FF12 being released for the Switch. I loved them back on the PS2. I'll probably grab Dragon Quest 11 also.

I have games from the 90s on my backlog. I don't have the attention span to complete them really. I really would like to 100 percent my gamerscore on Fallout 3 though.

As for games I'll buy this year. Probably FF12 Switch, FFX Switch, Pokemon Sword, and Maybe Dead or Alive 6. I am also considering the Elsweyr expansion for Elder Scrolls Online but I don't have anyone to play that game with. (I play it on PS4).

I am going to finish up RE2 remake with Claire, play through the 3 nightmare scenarios and trade it in to pay off my DMCV Preorder.

after that my last game will be Seikero: Shadows Die Twice. I will pack up the PS4 I have been using and give it back to my best friend.

Speaking of backlogs, mine is so big that I have pretty much given up getting to all of them anytime soon.

SOH where do you rank RE2 remake among other Resi games?

Here are my backlog stats, if you want to see the document I'll share it:

Total Owned 792
Total Started 497
Total Finished 335
Owned Completion % 42.30%
Started Completion % 67.40%

I'm almost 300 behind on games I haven't even started. Most of this is due to "games with gold" releasing 4 new games every month. And the fact that I do their rewards program so I get even more free games. On that list there's still 135 games under my "want" list.

SOH where do you rank RE2 remake among other Resi games?

It is good.

I think resident evil 4 is the best in the series by far. Followed up by resident evil revelations.

RE2 Remake completes the trifecta of resident evils best games (I have not played re7 and have no interest to do so)

The only fault the game has is that it is jarring going from being able to do a suplex on a monk in re4 to not being able to do it in re2 remake. Which I understand why that is. ( according to the re lore Leon received additional special ops training after the events of re2) so I cant really fault them much for that.

What is cool about re2 remake is that after you complete it with one character you unlock the story B for the other. The game does a good job at switching up environments, weapon and enemy locations. The sewer section is a slog fest though. It has a lot of back tracking. And you have to play through it with both characters. With that being said, they did a great job in making sure that the areas are not as repetitive for both characters.

over all it is a fine game and easily my candidate for GOTY. I wouldnt put it on my top 5 list of all time but....it is something special.

If you are on the fence about it I recommend getting it on sale. I only pulled the $60 price tag because I enjoyed the original re2 and had been following the rumors of a remake for the longest time.

I don't even want to to talk about my backlog on 3ds and Wii u, as I've given up on playing those since switch came out. Really hhoping for ports of Majora's mask, xcx, and Pikmin 3 someday.

Posted March 4th by ShadowFox08

keep in mind that most sewer sections in games suck.

It is not as bad as Blight Town or the Depths (Darks souls, Demon Souls) but dam it was annoying.

I am planning to grab 7 when it goes on sale next. Usually when one-player games as old as Resi 7 go on sale it's in the less than $30 bucks category. Probably won't be able to get a sale on Resi 2 remake of that calibur until black friday of 2020.

But I mean, I'm gonna buy Last of Us 2 at full price. If Resi 2 is that good I might not wait. I do like to support the devs when they do a good job.

Funnily enough the only games I know I want to buy this year are Switch releases. The rest it'll just be a see what comes out or see what my friends are pestering me to play from several years back.

Super Mario Maker 2
Pokemon Sword/Shield (which one will depend on what the differences are)
Animal Crossing 2019
Luigi's Mansion 3
Dragon Quest Builders 2 (never actually finished the first one but I really liked it so definitely getting the sequel)

seems to be a popular opinion and I can see it. I think it's also worth including 7 there as an option because it apparently was a big entry point for a lot of players who came to love it on PS1.

meanwhile I started with NES FF1 like a real hero so I can't personally speak to either as a starting point :J

Will be picking up DMC5 later this week. It's been a long time coming, and it's looking like everything I'd hoped it would be. Otherwise, I'm not really up to speed with game releases anymore. Are Ori and Sekiro still set to drop this year? They're about the only two off the top of my head that I'm really keen on

As for backlogs, I made peace with the fact I just won't ever get around to playing a bunch of "must-play" games, or ones that I always wanted to set aside time to play. Would rather invest that time and effort into something more productive at this stage in my life.

Sekiro is suppose to come out this month.

And I agree with you. I can't invest much time in games. At this point im going for quality of quantity.

Which of the final fantasy games on switch (out or upcoming) are action RPG like xenoblade 2? I kinda favor that over turn based? By that I mean, FF7 Zodiac Age, FF9, FF10, FF-X2?
I'm probably gonna get Zodiac Age first.. I heard 9 has an annoying bug on restarting music that never got patched

Ori

I had actually forgotten about Ori as it's been so long. Yes I think it's still set for 2019 so I guess add that to my list for this year.

“Which of the final fantasy games on switch (out or upcoming) are action RPG like xenoblade 2?”

I haven’t played Xenoblade 2 but FF12 is probably the closest to an action RPG.

Edited March 5th by Q

I only played the demo of FF12, but its combat was fairly similar to Xenoblade's from what I remember - somewhere between turn-based and a true action-RPG combat system, with free movement and auto-attacks. It's been about 13 years since I touched that, though. The Zodiac Age version is supposed to be an improvement that changes some stuff people disliked in the original.

1 through X-2 (and Mystic Quest!) are all turn-based or turn-based ATB (active time battle, where each character has an individual turn gauge that fills up over time and lets you choose their action from a menu once it's full...so you're still waiting for your turn, but not planning out a full round of everyones' moves in advance at once).

11 and 14 are MMOs

the 13 trilogy is...some weird thing I never played and don't know what it is. I think it's a weird take on turn-based, but that's a vague guess tbh (and doesn't matter for Switch purposes anyway so w/e)

15 is pretty much an action RPG but it's not a good one and I think they said they were porting over the shitty mobile-looking version eventually and I would 1000% avoid that

(meanwhile on Switch I've been playing Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition, which has a more straight take on action RPG combat and is not a FF title)

Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition, and it was ported to the Switch a while back. I actually purchased it when it had a sale but haven't played it yet. Most places are giving it average review of around 6 or 7 out of 10.

not sure if the person who wrote that is underinformed or a dickhead

I mean, you can go on the eshop right now and pre-purchase FF7 for like $16 - it comes out almost three weeks from today. There's a post in the switch news feed about the new-to-switch FF ports.

that picture isn't from the port in question (there are actual screens in the shop if you're not familiar with how 7 looked). What they're selling is a port of the original that still looks like the original, but has a handful of new features (like a high-speed mode).

Fair, but I kinda notice this is a thing people say about games and almost never about movies or television or books. Like for some reason carving out time to play a game is a waste as we get older, but watching a movie or reading a book or following a television show every week isn't. One thing I've been kind of enjoying lately is playing video games for like an hour here and there, and realizing that games don't actually have to be that time consuming. (I'm currently "playing" Kingdom Hearts III - or more accurately, slogging through the cutscenes and boring story), but there's no rush! I don't feel any arbitrary deadline, which is how I used to feel playing games. So now I kinda consume games like I consumed everything else out there that is art or entertainment, while also having plenty of time for those more productive things.

Not telling you you should play more games, mind you! Everyone has different lives and priorities. Just noting that this is a statement that is almost only made regarding video games rather than other mediums. I'm kinda curious why that is. (Although, reflecting on Dark Souls, sometimes you just can't save your game for like, an hour at a time, so there is some design stuff that keeps you playing - I'm going through Blue Dragon right now too and they do that a lot, where I literally can't stop playing for over an hour without losing my progress. That's irritating to me.)

13 and 13-2's battle style (and battle music) are awesome. it's just the rest of the game/story/world that sucks.

Can't speak to XIII-2's, but I did play XIII and found it...meeeeh. I didn't hate it, but I personally found it a bit boring. I thought they removed too much control from the player. I know that type of RPG is always about managing your party, but XIII made me feel like I was actually a manager rather than a player. I wasn't the biggest fan of it.

As for the question, I am primarily interested at this point in Sekiro, The Last of Us 2, Gears 5, and Ori. I was sort of interested in Catherine: Full Body, but probably won't get it new. And I *was* interested in The Walking Dead: The Final Season conceptually, thinking that I would be interested in seeing where it goes. But everything with Telltale and how they handled it, I'm not gonna support them.

As for my backlog, god. Still have to play Bloodborne, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Watch Dogs, and Red Dead II. The Witness just became available as a PS Plus free game, so I'm gonna dive into that soon. Plus I'm still trying to replay all my old video games. So. Lots to play.

Posted March 6th by Jet Presto

But XIII made me feel like I was actually a manager rather than a player. I wasn't the biggest fan of it.

I get what you're saying but I kinda enjoyed that aspect of it. That you could shift up your entire strategy with one click and pre-plan those strategies beforehand. You could do it a bit in FF12 too with the gambit system. The main problem is that neither FF12 or 13 feel like Final Fantasy. If they had different titles then it would be fine.

@jet I can't speak for Orion but for me that includes other forms of media as well. There is wiggle room for books because there's an odd chance that what I'm reading might come up in my field of interest. But even then I know I won't ever complete my bavk log of books. There's something on there (my watch list as well) that while interesting just dont hold my attention.

I also want to point out that with movies its usually 2 maybe 3 hours of my life that it takes up. With tv shows it can be close to what maybe 10 per season? There are some games that take a long time to finish. And when it comes to movies shows and books I can do that pretty easily when I'm traveling /away from the house.

Can't really do that with a console game for obvious reasons (outside of the switch or vita)

Fair, but I kinda notice this is a thing people say about games and almost never about movies or television or books.

As SOH said, all those things are less time consuming than most of the games I'd play. I don't have hours upon hours of free time anymore, and when I do, the last thing I want is to be playing an old, janky game (or barely scratching the surface of a 30+ hour open world RPG) that I feel like I'm doing out of obligation to fulfill a "backlog" that ultimately means nothing to me. I'm more than happy to set aside time to play something new I'm really interested in (which I'll do with the ones mentioned above), but I'm not going to pretend I actually give a shit about something like Chrono Trigger or RDR2 anymore.

Not to mention when it comes to a movie or TV series, I can share that experience with my girlfriend and/or mates. Making it a bit more worthwhile to me.

Posted March 7th by Orion Nebula

"Still haven't played Ocarina of Time :|"

And you call yourself a gamer? What would your fellow developers say about that? lol, just kidding. You really should play through that game. fair warning, if you play the original version (N64, GameCube, Virtual Console) you'll find the graphics very dated as it was made for the N64 hardware. I would recommend the 3DS remake as the graphics are much better and there are gameplay tweaks to make the game more enjoyable.

Sekiro and Outward are two games that promise to be very challenging, I'm looking forward to beating the both of them. Also I'm a sucker for Soulslike games. So yeah.

Dying Light was probably the best zombie game I have ever played. Parkour, blunt objects, electrified, flaming machetes...what's not to love?

Also Pokemon. Don't really need to say much outside the fact that it looks gorgeous.

As for my backlog..I don't even wanna think about the games I still haven't beaten...so many. Such a small amount of time to play...
