What do you guys think about disabling posting by non-accounts?

Like, in this hypothetical GTX0 you can only post if you've made an account and logged in.

You can still have altnames. These can still be hidden from everyone but staff like they are currently.

Registration should still be simple to use like it is now -- I have some stuff in place to prevent automated registrations.

My thinking with this has less to do with moderation or w/e but with simplifying the database/code and the overall user experience. I feel like at this point, the site's been around for 11 years so anyone who wanted an account has one and anyone who missed the boat can get one easily. I also genuinely don't see much difference between using a username/password combo to post and using it once to login.

However, this does kind of break from 20 years of gametalk precedent, so I'd like to get you guys's opinions first.

Sounds annoying. Trolling is fun sometimes.

I'm kidding of course. Does Niggabutt have an account?

I already expressed my opinion on discord and I definitely approve. Besides, if it doesn't work out we can switch back.

This is exactly why this should happen imo, too many random name trolls that are harder to deal with without an account. Some more malicious than others. If it's not that malicious you can just use an alt-name on your account anyway.

Xhin may not have moderation as his priority but it can be used for that.

As long as the database can deal with the several hundred usernames that I will inevitably rack up, go for it.

I think it would've been useful at slowing/deterring spammers in the past. Less useful now but would still say go for it.

not a fzan GT has never had compulsory registration and I don't think it should.

I know I'm not here much anymore, but one of my first draws to the original GT was the fact that we didn't need to make an account. Simple or not to create one, I preferred the full anonymity of it. I know your account system doesn't require an IRL name, but just the idea of an account takes away from whatever it was that felt comfortingly anonymous about not needing an account back in the day. Imo, that's what set GT apart from many other forums... and it was actually the reason I settled on using GT over other forums back in 2006. (God, do you guys remember how old GT didn't even require a password lmao)

I think adding an account-based system to GTx0 will discourage any old regs who "come back on a whim" from posting, especially if they only check back infrequently or post around the holidays or whatever (not worth creating an account when you may only devote 3 or 4 days to the site at a time, at most). Plus, for these revisiting regs, it'll feel like a pretty noticeable "branding" difference.

That said, if it's really going to simplify the code, and if you want to consider the 80/20 rule (e.g. most regs are ok with an account, looks like), I get it. Just wanted to raise my counter-points in a way that's both how I feel and devil's advocate-like.

This one doesn't either, provided you use a name that hasn't had a password set for it yet. The password just keeps other people from being able to use it.

Sounds annoying.

All right, fair enough.

I think I will put in some UI/database changes to line the site up more with the registration system, but I'll keep the old way grandfathered in. This will all be covered in my Notes post.

have you considered just disabling posting?

Site moderation is a nightmare with the current system. It's entirely too easy to spin up an alt-name, jump to one of a billion proxy servers, and effectively evade all attempts at moderation. I know this because I've had to spend hours of my time dealing with dedicated trolls that keep reposting/spamming as quickly as I can ban them. Something needs to change if this site is ever going to have the kind of traffic we'd all like to see it have, or it will be effectively unmanageable.

It's at least worth trying an accounts-only posting system. It can even be mostly invisible - just have the username/password field in posts log you in when you reply.
