Finally started on my novel and liking it so far. I only have a chapter worked up at the moment, but a lot of my ideas are being typed up on word as I go along. Right now, I’m leaning towards a Fantasy/romance setting. The world is slowly in development at the moment. Coming up with a new and original magic system is going to be tough.

I'm working on a long-form critical essay about pornography, which is surely going to raise some eyebrows, but man research has been fascinating, enlightening, depressing, dark, and funny all at once. It's really taken on a whole new life from when I thought I'd be done with it in a week.

Other than that, I'm working on a tabletop board game that is supposed to function to mimic the feeling of depression and social anxiety, which is not going to be fun to play but I hope gives some insight into what it's like living with that stuff for all the people who get annoyed that I fall into social isolation for long stretches.

@castrael – wow working on a novel sounds so exciting. a chapter is a great start! do you have an idea of what is going to happen in your plot? what has your process of creating this been like?

@tnu – it's great that you have something youre working on! i have to be honest though, i am not really sure what a "longform fan shared universe project" entails. can you describe what you mean by that? im really sorry that i am not in-the-know on these things. i hope that it's going well though!!

@jet presto – your critical essay sounds absolutely fascinating! is it going to be published somewhere that like i can read it someday? can i ask what prompted you to start working on this piece?

your board game sounds v powerful and like it could be v important for a lot of ppl. what has making it been like? it sounds like something that would be difficult to get right and potentially v draining to create.

My essay will just wind up on my dumb blog. I can't entirely figure out what prompted this essay in particular. I have a lot of conflicting, complicated feelings about the porn industry, and the advent of free internet porn has only made that more muddled. I usually write things to try and sort out thoughts, and I suppose that's how this one specifically got started. I sometimes write free-flowing pieces in which I don't entirely know where it's going to end. And when I'm out of steam or concepts I want to address, I go back and try to shuffle things around to form a relatively coherent argument. I also tend to take an interest in topics that most people either don't know much about or talk openly about. (I'd previously written about Pornhub Cares, which was Pornhub's anti-domestic violence campaign that I felt weird about. I like delving into areas that people have an awareness of, but don't feel comfortable talking about it openly.)

As for the board game, it's been probably more fun to make it than it will be to play it. I'm a little worried that it's going to wind up a little too complicated. It's kind of an RPG, so there's various stats you have to manage. Means there's a lot more elements to have to focus on for balance, but I also have the benefit of it being a game with a purpose. Mechanics as metaphor means I can sacrifice some stuff that would otherwise be "bad design" if it means that it relays a deliberate experience. Mostly, I just keep screwing up the board design. Right now, that's the thing I'm futzing with the most. And then I get to mess around with two different decks of cards to design, and then player stats. And then I have to write rules and play-test. Which may or may not ever happen.

I did make a board game that was sort of Clue-like once that was a blast to make, and I actually think was a solid casual board game. (It was called "Barhop." Players moved around an open board trying to collect beer or shots tokens from each of the bars, but they also had a "Drunk Level" chart that would rise, and they had to manage it by going to other places around the board. So your "Drunk Level" would increase if you went into a bar, but would decrease a bit if you went to a restaurant. And if you got too drunk, you'd have to start back at home, or if you were just drunk enough, you could get caught by police.)

oh neat! can i read your blog? (no pressure if you just want to tell me it's private!) it sounds to me like you feel the need to dissect some v worthy topics and i think it's esp cool that they are ones that other ppl might be loathe to discuss. i would love to read your thoughts and research both on the current porn industry project and on the pornhub cares one! (but again no pressure – i just want to say that your blog sounds really really cool). i hope that your essay comes together well and that you continue to find writing it a rewarding/enlightening experience!

i really dont know a lot abt board games or play them v much, but it certainly sounds to me like you are on the right track w what all you are considering and what you intend for the game to be. i do hope that you get to the point where you can write all the rules and test the game! im glad also that you have been finding it fun to make in ways :) good luck w it! it really sounds like a great project

your other clue-like board game sounds like it would be fun to play at like a party or something :) was there like a real life drinking element to it too? i bet that could really be a hit lol :)

Creating it has been slow because there were so many ideas thrown out there that I liked and ended up not liking. But, this time around, I think I found something. As for the plot, I'm playing around with it. A rebellion against the king has started for shutting down slave camps that have been used to take people away with magical powers. I don't want to say too much just yet because it could very well change again. lol

@castrael – it sounds fun that youve been considering and trying out so many different ideas! im glad you feel like maybe you are onto something this time around :) that is v exciting. your plot sounds like it has a lot of potential to be entertaining :) i hope that you will be able to figure things out when it comes to building your own magic system from scratch! keep us updated on your progress ^.^

I will and thanks sus. I'll have a better explanation of my story soon. I need to start creating outlines though first.
