I guess because we are butthurt over the general assembly’s assessment of recent Israeli atrocities (you can hear the barely-contained passive aggression in Nikki Haley’s statement, for anyone who cares to watch or read that).

Well the point about the human rights council ignoring Venezuela and Congo is fair, but given the timing this is probably more about the 2300 children at the US border than anything else.

The UN is bigger than the US, so I don't see what boycotting would actually accomplish

Yeah it’s also worth mentioning Saudi Arabia and other obvious human rights violators are on the council (including the US until this happened), so it’s not exactly a serious defender of anything. But, as with nearly everything this administration does, this sets a terrible precedent, in this case concerning America’s own human rights violations going forward. Indicative of this is Nikki Haley randomly trashing various human rights groups.

The Human Rights Council is a sham and has some of the worst offenders in the world as members. This is undeniable, and it is why the Bush Administration elected not to join to begin with.

Israeli atrocities

Continuing to say this doesn't make it true. Israel has a right to stop people from storming the border and attacking its people. You had no answer to this dilemma in our other thread - what they were supposed to do about the Great March of Return and the violence the Palestinians bring with it - and instead you rejected that the question was legitimate and insisted that they should retreat to the 1948 or 1967 borders. As if that's an answer to anything.

I agree. The worst offender of Human rights violations being the United States. It makes no sense to be on that council.

But it doesn’t matter when we violate human rights because we are always the good guys with good intentions no matter what horrible shit we do! Convenient little standard lol

Was that around the same time the Bush administration told the press to stop calling torture torture and instead refer to it as “enhanced intereogation”?

The Human Rights Council has been a joke for a long time. Saudi Arabia as a member? Along with Pakistan, the Congo and China? Give me a fucking break. The United States is better off out than in.

The fact that it is obsessed with Israel when its own members are guilty of far, far worse says it all. It's a disgrace.

Hilarious retorts one and all. Pacman's second response was a bit more clever since I can't refute it by merely asserting that it's categorically incorrect. I defer to John McCain's expertise on the matter of torture.

The Human Rights council offers legitimacy to nations that deserve none. The singular focus it gives Israel is undeniable. What else is there to say on the matter? If anything I've said is somehow wrong, please explain how.

Like I said. The waterboarding of prisoners was indefensible.

A lot of Pakistan's civil violations arise from militant groups like the Taliban, which are obviously not an official arm of the government, but the government has done nothing to stop this group from operating. US pulled funding out of Pakistan on the basis of their inaction.

Nationally, the media fears discussing civil rights issues for fear of retribution. Silencing and forced disappearances of dissenters seems to be common. This doesn't seem to be worse than what we hear regarding Russia.

But the United States... we have a history of segregation and redlining that resulted in entire neighborhoods becoming ghettos. Despite the massive wealth, most of our spending goes to military funding. Healthcare is abysmal. Housing and education are all crazy expensive, so people go without. Hate crime is on the rise, and adding the separation of children at the border is not helping. Closed primaries and the hysteria surrounding our elections are a real problem, as well as oligarchy and monopolies. There are plenty more issues, but the US is a perfect oligarchy that does not put the needs of its citizens first.

US should leave the whole UN so this is a good first step.

Experience tells me that people like you know very little of how the world works. Like I said that is a horrible idea. We are already starting to lose our global standing and influence in the world an "idea" such as yours will set us back decades, and reduce all the progress we have made on the world stage.

We might as well quit the UN. It’s not like we respect international law anyway.

America would be better off without any world influence, just worrying about it's own affairs. This isn't 1950 anymore. Nobody cares about "super powers".
