Turning our Sun into a pulsar.

Here I've uploaded a video in which I used Universe Sandbox 2 to turn our Sun into a Pulsar. A pulsar is a type of neutron star, which is the leftover remnant of a relatively large star that went supernova. Just before the star goes nova it collapses into itself and its core gets crushed into a highly magnetic and extremely dense sphere of neutrons and other exotic subatomic particles. The gravity of a neutron star is extremely intense, second only to a black hole itself, and they typically spin anywhere from just a few times a second to a few hundred times a second. The highly magnetic neutron stars release beams of energized radiation from their polls. If these polls aren't located on the axis of the neutron star's spin then the beams will shine on the viewer once every spin creating the appearance of a pulsing light, hence the name.

If a neutron star the same mass as our sun were to replace the sun in our solar system then nothing would happen to the orbits of anything in the solar system. However if the gamma rays shooting from their polls flashed on earth from that proximity it would destroy the ozone layer and quickly bathing the surface in large amounts of radiation causing mass extinction events and ultimately a total extinction event. On top of that there would not be enough heat to keep our planet warm so we'd all be dead anyway. However neutron stars usually have a mass range between just above the mass of the sun to about 3 times the mass of the sun. So if one entered our solar system from the outside, it would completely screw up the orbit of everything around us as it rivals our sun for control. Comets and asteroids would be flung everywhere possibly bombarding our planet. The earth could even be pulled out of its habitable zone thus destroying life, and obviously if the neutron star got close enough our planet would get ripped apart and stretched into a noodly strand of atoms from the intense gravity before a tremendous crash onto the star's surface at a velocity of about one half to two thirds the speed of light.

Yet keep in mind, this little monster is only about half the size of New York city.

So approximately as heavy as 65 empire state buildings. That's still pretty impressive.
