Trump calls Haiti and El Salvador "shit hole countries" to lawmakers aiming to restore protection for immigrants from Haiti, El
Salvador, and African countries
Posted: Posted January 11th by ShadowFox08

President Trump grew frustrated with lawmakers Thursday in the Oval Office when they floated restoring protections for immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and African countries as part of a bipartisan immigration deal, according to two people briefed on the meeting.

“Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” Trump said, according to these people, referring to African countries and Haiti. He then suggested that the United States should instead bring more people from countries like Norway, whose prime minister he met Wednesday.

The comments left lawmakers taken aback, according to people familiar with their reactions. Sens. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) and Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.) proposed cutting the visa lottery program by 50 percent and prioritizing countries already in the system, a White House official said.

A White House spokesman defended Trump’s position on immigration without directly addressing Trump’s remarks.

“Certain Washington politicians choose to fight for foreign countries, but President Trump will always fight for the American people,” spokesman Raj Shah said in a statement issued after The Washington Post first reported Trump’s remarks. “. . .Like other nations that have merit-based immigration, President Trump is fighting for permanent solutions that make our country stronger by welcoming those who can contribute to our society, grow our economy and assimilate into our great nation.”

Outlining a potential bipartisan deal, the lawmakers discussed restoring protections for countries that have been removed from the temporary protected status program while adding $1.5 billion for a border wall and making changes to the visa lottery system.

The administration announced this week that it was removing the protection for citizens of El Salvador.

Trump had seemed amenable to a deal earlier in the day during phone calls, aides said, but shifted his position in the meeting and did not seem interested.

Graham and Durbin thought they would be meeting with Trump alone and were surprised to find immigration hard-liners such as Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) and Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) at the meeting. The meeting was impromptu and came after phone calls Thursday morning, Capitol Hill aides said.

After the meeting, Marc Short, Trump’s legislative aide, said the White House was nowhere near a bipartisan deal on immigration.

We still think we can get there,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said at the daily White House news briefing.

Should we be surprised anymore?

Once again, Trump channels the worst of America and disgraces the entire country. But this is particularly terrible.

Of course they are shit hole countries . The u.s. supported the regimes of each countries respective dictators and haven't been able to recover since.

Haiti was a French colony. Some mulattos led a rebellion against the French. Then the mulattos were killed by the darker skinned and thats Haiti today. I know there was for sure some intervention in South America (Iran contra comes to mind) but I'm not familiar with El Salvadoran intervention.

I'm usually against military invention. I always say the last justified war was the Mexican-American War. I'm against nation building and puppet installing. But I can see why we intervened in some areas, specifically Nicaragua and Chile . Needed to stop the Reds.

The u.s. openly supported the asshole that was Duvalier and his regime.

The u.s. supported the right wing government during it's civil war and trained their dearh squads which killed thousands of innocent individuals.

Shit they wiped out a village of a thousand people over the course of a weekend.

The Hilarious part is that the u.s. created it's very own immigration problem because of it's policies.

Pinochet did nothing wrong

He overthrew a democratically elected President. Voted for by the chillean people. And was an asshole dictator with a long list of human riots violations.

We fucked over the countries south of our border. And are directly responsible for thousands if not millions of deaths.

I'm actually shocked that no extremist group has risen up from that area of the world. (That I'm aware of, I haven't looked into that)

I'm not familiar with our presence in Africa.

Not familiar with that tbh. I would say though that US intervention should not excuse the inability to get their shit together. Look at the Earthquake donations that obviously got squandered (leaving aside the Clinton's pocketing the money instead of sending it their way).

Actually u.s. intervention directly keeps them from getting g their shit together. Under both the Democrats and republican presidents. If I'm not mistaken we crushed the Hondurian economy under Obama because they refused to play ball with us for certain trade goods. I'll have to look it up later.

I would encourage you to read up on everything we did there. The Catholic Church is also at fault.

at this point Im waiting for trump to drop the N word.

why is it not okay to call a shit hole a shit hole

I agree those places are shit holes. So is a good portion of America from my understanding. (I.E. Gary Indiana, The majority of the South, D.C. ((nothing better than seeing a homeless guy drop a deuce 12 feet from the Lincoln memorial!!!))) But I know better than to say that in a position of power. I also understand that those placing have far more redeeming qualities than shitty ones. But I feel you or Trump won't be able to identify or comprehend those qualities. His comments on all Haitians having aids and Africans living in huts are far more embarrassing though.

He then suggested that the United States should instead bring more people from countries like Norway, whose prime minister he met Wednesday.

Good luck with that.

You guys don't think there is nothing wrong with the president saying those countries are "shit holes" and not look at what it's insinuating, as well and the power and responsibility he has for this country?

Trump could take a dump in a public toilet and CNN would be asking Sarah Huckabee Sanders about it all week.
