Top 10 favorite movies of 2017?
Posted: Posted December 26th, 2017

Can be less than 10. Note I have not seen the following movies yet:

Detroit, Darkest Hour, War for the Planet of the Apes, Coco, The shape of Water, Wind River, Jumanji 2 (really positive reviews surprisingly)

In order:
10. Fast 8: Fate of the Furious/ Power Rangers
9. Bright
8. Star Wars the Last Jedi
7. The Big Sick
6. It
5. Baby Driver (surprised me!)
4. Thor 3
3.Wonder woman
2. Dunkrik
1. Logan

I am surprised I actually have a top 10 list this year. I did not spend much time in Cinemas this year and when I did go more often than not the movie left me with a bad taste in my mouth.

Interestingly enough the most memorable movies from my list, imo, are The Last Jedi and Logan.

I am shocked at how much I enjoyed baby driver. Really fun film. One part of the movie does bug me but I am not familiar with Georgia's gun laws to really protest much about it.

On the other side of the spectrum. I really enjoyed Fast 8. Ive never been a fan of the franchise but Ill be dam If I didnt have a good time while watching the movie. That slot was a toss up between John Wick 2, Kingsman 2 and Fast 8. While I enjoyed John Wick 2 I was hoping for more. Of the 3 Fast 8 was the one I enjoyed the most.

Honorable mention to the Power Rangers. As a long time fan of the series I loved it. When the theme song started playing I nearly lost it. Really hoping for a sequel in the future.

What are your top 10 favorite movies of the year? Any comedies that you guys can recommend?

I feel like I watched a ton of movies this year, but most of the smaller and indie titles won't get their release here until January and Feb (Lady Bird, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, Phantom Thread, Good Time, The Shape of Water, A Ghost Story). Then there's a few I just missed or haven't seen yet, like Lost City of Z, Get Out, The Florida Project, Killing of a Sacred Deer, and The Red Turtle...

But even out of everything I have seen, the majority just didn't leave much of an impression. Like, Baby Driver was fine, and I respect Edgar Wright's work, but for the life of me I just can't love anything about it. "It" was a surprisingly competent horror film, and one of the rare few that understands how vital empathy for the central characters is for suspense to actually work, but I'm not overly keen on watching it again (and I generally enjoy rewatching horror).

So for me, it's just a top 5:

1. Blade Runner 2049
2. Dunkirk
3. T2: Trainspotting
4. Logan
5. John Wick 2

Honourable mentions to Thor: Ragnarok, mother!, and Logan Lucky.

Im going to sound like a dick, its not my intention. But have you been living under a rock for the past 17 years lol.

"Logan" refers to the X-men character Wolverine. Specifically Hugh Jackmans portrayal of Wolverine which has dominated pop culture since the new Millennium.

Now Im aware that not every one watches comic book movies or movies in general. Or is big on popculture. But Im legitimately kinda shocked and a little impressed that you dont know who the title refers to.

Admittedly had this been the year 2000 I would agree it would seem strange to see a movie titled "logan" on a top 10 list. But thats not the case.

Yeah Baby Driver was a surprise Hit for me.

5. John Wick 2

Out of curiosity. What did you enjoy about this movie? I would like to hear your take on it. The sequels this year have been polarizing among my friends. (Not just for this film but for Gotg 2, Star Wars, Kingsman 2 to name a few)

What we got was a decent follow up but I was hoping for much more.

Ninja edit: I finished war of the planet of the apes. great film. Genuinely surprised that the trilogy as a whole is as good as it is. The series just kept getting better with each movie.

The only drawback, which is no fault of the movie and can be alleviated thanks to technology and free time, is that a large amount of time has gone by since the release date of the first and second film (2011, 2014?, Respectively) story wise I was kinda lost before I did some googling to refresh my self.

This is one of those movies next to star wars where watching the trilogy back to back would be a worthwhile and fun experience. ( I don't think I've rewatched any of the movies) They wrapped up cesears story well. I've heard stories of a fourth movie but I'm hoping that's set way into the future and they leave the story of cesear alone.

That reminds me I still have to watch Logan Lucky.

I saw Logan Lucky. It's good but it's one of those watch one time movies. It was marketed as a comedy mostly but imo it's just barely a comedy. A few chuckle moments, never a real gutbuster/laugh out loud type of movie. There are hardly few funny scenes. There's a lot more emphasis on the heist than the comedy.

Man. I keep remembering movies that make me realize I don't exactly know the order of, beyond the top three. If we're doing honorable mentions, mine would be:

1. The Little Hours
2. Free Fire
3. Dunkirk
4. Colossal
5. Wonder Woman

I really want to include The Bad Batch, but I just wasn't terribly into it. There was enough stuff that made me still interested in seeing what Ana Lily Amirpour does next. It was certainly not the follow up to A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night many wanted, but I still think she brings enough stuff to the table to still follow.

Still have to watch Baby Driver. But Coco was great!

I think the only movie I saw that came out this year was Last Jedi

Out of curiosity. What did you enjoy about this movie? I would like to hear your take on it.

It's been a while since I watched it, so memory might be hazy. But I mostly loved the expansion of its world - the Continental, the assassins, its laws. It's utterly ridiculous but commits 100% to it with absolute sincerity and gusto, and that's what makes it such a joy to watch. I thought there were a ton of memorable, extremely-well choreographed fight scenes, higher stakes and a better villain, and a markedly more interesting cast of characters (well, except for Ruby Rose).

I know a couple people who still prefer the first John Wick, and I can't argue with that at all, because I still think that's a wonderfully self-contained revenge story. For me however, breathing more life into its lore and indulging in its absurdity on a larger scale is exactly what I wanted from the sequel, and it definitely delivered.

I really want to include The Bad Batch, but I just wasn't terribly into it.

Oof, yeah. One of those "not as good as the trailer" scenarios for sure. I didn't mind it either, but man it outstayed its welcome, and wasn't exactly enjoyable to watch for the most part.
