We're gonna need a bigger boat.
This song I've been writing has taken a weird turn...

Holy shit I did not intend for it to get this "edgy" for lack of a better word that I feel like using. Like, this is the sort of thing paranoid christians feared most "satanic" music was but even worse. I have heard songs that touch on similar things before, but they do it so subtly that most people don't actually even have a clue what it's about because they don't even say look up the lyrics and find an explanation or figure it out themselves.

I mean I did intend for this to be kinda "edgy" but it was supposed to have a purpose but somehow it has lost that and has fallen into a spiraling bottomless pit that just seems more and more depraved. Like, the initial tone of it leads to one thing and that leads to another and then all of the sudden it's fucking batshit. I can't even believe I wrote this. Not only that though, but I feel like it's kind of not great lyrics.

Thankfully, I don't intend to have anyone sing this and as far I know I probably won't be a singer anywhere in the near future if ever.

The thing I'm unsure about is where to go from here. I mean I've been adding to it on and off so it's not really close to being done yet (unless I start putting it together all at once) but do I try to turn this around and bring back the purpose or just go full "edge" with it and wonder if something is wrong with me? Do I dare to ever show it anywhere when it's done?

Lol I'm not sure if most of it would even be the sort of "edgy" you like. Plus it's probably not even good since I have no idea what I'm doing and at this point I'm really wondering if it's a good idea to post it publicly but maybe.

Well actually I might be overthinking the severity focusing for a while on it again. But I can definitely say it's weird.

Usually, when I'm working on a project that has gone on for too long, I change myself as a person, and that influences the work. What you need are strong pillars or posts that are stuck in the ground and do not change: what does this song mean to you? What do you hope it will accomplish? This is not something that you reevaluate every day, this is something you carve into a stone that lasts forever.

I was working on the design of a robot for a game, but I wanted the design of this robot to something sensible as a character. I already knew the world was more like a midwestern town, so a sci-fi or "boy and his robot" type of thing wouldn't work. I made a rule that no matter what, this robot should always feel like he could be a boy scout. He wasn't, but his design was evocative of that type of character. I had plans in the design to use the color of wires in his design (black, yellow, red, gray), but that all lead astray from the goalpost. I had to toss some cool designs because they didn't fit the theme of what I ultimately wanted to go for. That's what you need to do: be willing to make small sacrifices for the sake of the greater picture.

You can't do everything all at once: you need to choose something and stick with it.

I suppose so, but I wanted it to be mostly chaotic but not devoid of purpose. I can see why that may not always be the best idea right now, but it was the way I wanted it to be done. I actually kind of feel like that's the only way I can pull it off really I don't think I work particularly well under orderly conditions, I go with what comes to me more or less and then make something of it. But ya, this is good advice I think, just not sure if it's good for me.

He wasn't, but his design was evocative of that type of character.

Ya I see what you mean. I only went in with a very basic idea of what I wanted to do and that may have been where it got even more weird than I intended. Still, it did seem to bring some interesting ideas into that I may not have held onto or thought of had I not done it the way I do.

That's what you need to do: be willing to make small sacrifices for the sake of the greater picture.

May be true.

You can't do everything all at once: you need to choose something and stick with it.

Well I'll at least keep that in mind, thanks.

Everything should have a purpose, even if the purpose is chaos. At the end of the day, people will be listening to your song. What do you want them to take from it?
