People say "midget" is a derogatory word (on the level of racial slurs).

Why? Can anyone show me documented proof of the word's negative usage / history - or any evidence that small-bodied persons were ever the victims of any type of systemic oppression?

Many small-bodied persons insist that "dwarf" is a more acceptable term.

According to the dictionary, however, "dwarf" (originally dworf) means:
"A small creature resembling a human, often ugly, appearing in legends and fairy tales."

The word "midget" means:
"an extremely or unusually small person."

I think that small-bodied persons should consider reclaiming the word "midget" and reject the more obviously offensive term "dwarf."

Thoughts?

Had a dwarf hamster when I was a kid. I got it a smaller friend after having it a few weeks. A day later the larger hamster ate (there were some leftovers) the new hamster. Turns out cannibalism isn't uncommon in certain hamster breeds.

I always took "midget" to mean someone who was small in stature but like their proportions were off.

A dwarf was someone who was proportionally small.

My thought was always like this:

Danny DeVito/my 4'11" wife = midget

Warwick Davis = Dwarf

Then again I guess my wife is Mexican and nobody in her family is taller than like 5'5" so it may not be "unusual".

I never took midget to mean a bad thing until people said so. But if people don't want to be called that then fine, really.

But I've also met Native Americans who preferred the label of "Indians" and others that prefer "Native American".

A day later the larger hamster ate (there were some leftovers) the new hamster

I had a friend whose class had gotten two hamsters. The next day one of them had decapitated the other.

The way I've seen it, a dwarf us someone who has a condition making their proportions off (achondroplasia, for example), while a midget is simply a small person, who other than their height is proportional to an average person.
